P5-7 Food Careers Event

On Tuesday 4th October all pupils from P5-7 attended a Food Careers Event being held in Livingston. The event had lots of stalls from different food industries for the pupils to visit. Some stalls shared information about different companies and possible careers. Some stalls gave pupils the opportunity to try to identify foods, smell coffee beans or have a shot at some Silver Service. The favourite stalls were definitely the ones where pupils got to try some food. There was a stall that encouraged healthy eating by making smoothies but to blend the smoothie they had to pedal on a bike. Another stall showed them how to make some fancy white chocolate and a special jelly which all tasted lovely! The event was a great way for pupils to see the range of careers out there linked to the food industry from farmers, butchers, chemists (flavourings), nutritionists (humans and animals), web designers and so much more.

FUN FOOTBALL NIGHT

A huge thanks to Sibbalds for the donation of our superb trophy and medals for our football fun night . Also to all our parents, old and new, who came and supported our  night at Greenrigg  park and played football.

We all had an amazing time and the final was a huge success between the oldies and the school football club, who won the trophy . This is on display in our cabinet at Mrs Millar’s office .

What a superb community spirit we have! With lots of support from family’s donations, we have been able to buy our football club new strips. This could not be possible without the help of Mr W Swan and our parents.  Our strips are ordered and with the money we had left over we  bought lots of super toys for us in the playground. We also bought 2 new sets of goals,football socks,balls,whistles, a football bag,bicycle helmets for our scooters and a brilliant air pump . We will post pictures off our new strip when it arrives.

Becoming expert readers

Today we were lead learners with P3 to help us all become expert readers.

Mrs Campbell showed us how she reads a book and we then brainstormed how we could become better readers.

We then used what we thought and practiced being an expert reader.

Once we had read our books we gave the reader a star and a wish.

We can’t wait to do it again and continue our training on becoming expert readers.

Celebrating Roald Dahl day

Today we took part in Roald Dahl day. It would have been his 100th birthday today.

We watched a live event all about his writing, his characters and his books. We really enjoyed it.

We even had the chance to draw an Oompa Lompa with Quentin Blake.

We discussed who the most villiest villan was in his books – it’s Miss Trunchball from Matilda.

We had a great afternoon.

P5-6 STEM

Today I joined P5-6 to do a STEM lesson. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. This is a word you will hear a lot about at Greenrigg Primary School as we are going to be doing lots of STEM learning. I had a meeting with Miss Cooke last week to look at what STEM P5-6 can do this year. Then today I did an introduction to STEM with a mini-challenge. This will be something that all teachers and classes do this term.

The challenge we had was to Save Fred. In their groups they had to solve the problem and follow strict rules. They had to help Fred get from the top of his capsized boat into his life jacket that was underneath. They could only touch 4 paperclips and couldn’t touch Fred, the life jacket or the boat.

It was great to see the groups work together to solve the problem. They had to work together. They had to be creative with how they used what they had. This was a chance to practise some of the skills that they will be using as part of their STEM learning. We will be sharing more of their learning soon. Primary 3 and Primary 5/6 start debating

Primary 3 and Primary 5/6 have joined together this term to debate.

We discussed what a debate is, how they work and what different language we can use when we are debating and some of the rules.

We started with designing our debating tshirts in pairs so that we can use them in the “washing line” debate next week.

– 6 – 7 Open Evening Families are welcome to come along, your child can show you around their classroom, show you some of the learning that they have been doing so far this session, you can meet your child’s teacher and get a feeling for what it is like for your child in school.

– Our Flower Shows entries will be collected

Saturday 10th September
– We are delighted that Mrs Sheena Woodhouse will be opening the Flower Show at 10am at Alexander Peden Primary School, Harthill. The Greenrigg winning entries will be on display at the Show.
