Primary 1’s first full day!

It has been a long, busy day, but we have all enjoyed our first full day as Primary 1!

Today, we practised writing our names and then learned all about Kipper from the reading books that we will be getting home later in the term. After break, we worked on our counting by singing 5 little ducks! We then worked on our cutting skills by cutting out 5 ducks and sticking them onto some blue paper. This afternoon, we read a story called The Rainbow Fish, and spoke about how important it is to share in school. We then started making our own rainbow fish by sticking coloured tissue paper down as a collage. After some free play, we had a circle time about how important it is to have a name, and learned the names of everyone in our class. At the end of the day, we spent some time outside playing on the trim trail and then rounded off the day with some yoga!

Welcome Primary 1, August 2016!

A very big welcome to all our new Primary 1’s!

We had a lovely first day with Mrs Anthony – after settling in and colouring some beautiful pictures, we spoke about how we were feeling about starting school. Most of us were excited and a few of us were a bit nervous! We then had a dance to ‘Milkshake’ on GoNoodle before spending some time getting to know our classmates while exploring the classroom and having some choosing time. Our P7/6 buddies helped us to get ready for break and we went outside to enjoy our snacks and get some fresh air.

After break, we read a story and showed Mrs Anthony how good we are at sitting and listening. People who had ordered milk enjoyed drinking their milk while listening to the story. We then practised our smart walking in the corridors as we had a tour around the school, meeting Mrs Millar, Miss Tuke, Mrs Monahan and Miss Swan on our travels!

It was then time to get ready to go home. We did well waiting patiently for Mrs Anthony to call our name before we ran to our parents/carers!

We are all looking forward to day 2!

A few notes for parents/carers:

Please ensure your child’s name is on all items of clothing – indoor, outdoor, PE kit, bags and shoes.

PE days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting next week – it would be helpful if your child wears a polo shirt on these days rather than a shirt and tie. Please provide a PE kit suitable for indoors and outdoors, i.e. shorts, jogging bottoms (or similar) and a t-shirt. (You can also provide a zip up top and outdoor trainers if you feel necessary for outdoor PE lessons). This should all be put in a small bag that will be kept in class and sent home to be washed at the end of each term.

Please ensure your child wears a jacket (preferably with a hood) every day, regardless of the weather.

Water bottles should be provided with plain water for in class and after PE lessons – juice or flavoured water is only permitted for lunch and should be kept in your child’s bag or lunch box until lunchtime. Please ensure your child’s name is also on lunch boxes and water bottles.

The children only have 15 minutes to eat and play at morning break, therefore only a small snack is required at this time.

A letter will be sent home tomorrow regarding lunch on Thursday – the children are invited to have lunch at 12pm in school and then can be picked up at 12.30pm at the main office.

If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Anthony, Mrs Millar (at the office) or a member of management (Mrs Gibson/Miss Tuke).

Thank you!

Primary 1 Health Week

So far, we have enjoyed learning about healthy eating and the five sections of the Eatwell Plate – Fruit and vegetables, starchy foods, protein rich foods, dairy foods and fatty/sugary foods. We have learned that we need some of all these foods to have a healthy, balanced diet.

On Monday, we had a football session with Scott. We had great fun while having exercise.

On Wednesday, we had gymnastics with Nicola and Jenny.

We had lots of fun!

We tried yoga on Friday.

Primary 1 Trip – Tesco Farm to Fork

Today we visited Tesco in Bathgate to learn about different foods and how they end up in our kitchens. We travelled on the bus to Bathgate then were met at Tesco by a lovely lady called Tracey. She took us up to the training room where we met Paul. We were given yellow bibs to wear and a hat with our names on them.

We then had to make sure we were quiet as we walked through the supermarket to the fruit and vegetable section with Paul.

Paul asked us lots of questions about fruit and veg – we learned that fruit have seeds and vegetables don’t, which means tomatoes and peppers are actually fruit! We had to split into teams and find a fruit or vegetable for each colour of the rainbow. We learned about some new fruit and vegetables, like aubergines.

We then got to try some fruit – some of which we had never had before. Max really liked the mango and Kayla liked the grapes!

After the fruit and veg section, we went to the fish section where we learned about some different kinds of fish that they sell in Tesco and even got to hold them! We saw mackerel, flatfish and squid.

We had a little break after the fish where we got a drink of water and a piece of fruit (healthy!). We then went with Tracey to the bakery. We learned about the ingredients needed to make bread (flour, yeast, water, sugar and salt) and saw the machines used to make bread and rolls.

We then added toppings to our own rolls – we could have tiger paste, sesame seeds, poppy seeds or cheese (or all of them together!).

We got to see the warehouse where all the food is kept before going onto the shelves – we even got to see in the back of a huge lorry! We then had to go into the fridge, which was really cold, and then the freezer which was even colder!

To finish the day, we got to taste lots of different cheese. We learned that cheese is made from milk, which turns into curds and whey before being squeezed together to make cheese.

We got to try cheddar cheese, smoked cheese and onion cheese. Payton loved the smoked cheese! We got to smell some blue cheese and only a few of us were brave enough to taste it – Callum was brave but didn’t like it!

We had a great day at Tesco and can’t wait to eat our rolls after school!

Primary 1 PE

Yesterday, Primary 1 had PE outside. We worked on our balancing skills – we practised walking while balancing a bean bag on our head.

We then tried balancing the bean bag on different parts of our bodies.

We found that different beanbags were easier to balance than others. The fuller beanbags and silky beanbags were harder than the floppy beanbags. We then tried throwing our beanbags to see how high we could throw them without dropping them!

Every day, we try to do a ‘Daily Mile’ run. We aren’t quite at a full mile yet, but are getting close!

Remember to stretch afterwards!

P1 Health and Wellbeing

Primary 1 have been learning about the Human Body. We learned the names for some parts of our body and were able to label them on a picture. We then drew around a partner in the playground and labeled the parts of the body on these. We practised matching the pictures to the words of the parts of the body.
