P4/3 football debate finale…

Following our football debate we prepared and delivered scripts, designed flyers and posters, counted and verified the votes and we have collectively reached a decision. Football is ………………………..staying!! Well done to the ‘FOR’ and ‘AGAINST’ campaigners, you gave very well presented speeches with strong arguments to our infant classes, Mrs Gibson, Mrs Kerr, Miss Benson, Miss White, Mrs Woodhouse, Miss Henderson, Mrs Riley and Mrs Hendrie. Votes were quite close with 33 – 21 in support of keeping football. However, the story didn’t end there. We are very happy that football is staying but we also realised that changes need to be made. As a class, we chose 4 rules, drew up a contract and asked all infant pupils and staff to sign it. We will review this again in 2 weeks to discuss whether the changes have worked and whether or not our rules need to be tweeked. We have thoroughly enjoyed our real-life debate and cannot wait for our next one!

P4/3 investigate sea pollution

As part of our topic we have been investigating the effects of sea pollution. We were shocked and saddened at how our careless behaviour and actions can destroy an eco system. Our fish, Freddie, was faced with oil, grit, toxic waste, animal waste, litter and other sources of pollution, and he saddly took his final breath at the end of our lesson :-(. Please note that no animals were harmed in the making of this experiment – Freddie was a sponge in disguise :-)!

 

We discussed how we can prevent sea pollution and came up with an action plan.

P4/3 star writers of the week

I am very proud of these amazing young people after reading their arguments for and against football in school. They were very persuasive and showed real belief in their views. This has been the toughest week ever to pick star writers as the standard was so high. I can’t wait for our next debate!

P4/3 debate

We would like to restore harmony to our playground during lunch and play time. We have had a few complaints about arguments breaking out over football and it became such a big problem that we have decided to take action! We are in 2 camps – For banning football and for keeping football. Our action plan was to

  • Discuss our reasons for what we believe
  •  Write a statement to present our argument to the P1 and P2 classes, Mrs Gibson and Mrs Kerr
  • Create a campaign using persuasive posters and leaflets to support our cause
  • Take a vote and stick to the results until the end of term.

Our debating team FOR football (to which McKenzie became the natural leader)

  • It would make people sad if football was banned and they’d have nothing to do (Cate)
  • If your dream is to be a footballer or a gymnast you might fail if you can’t practise (Payton)
  • It’s not fair for people who want to play (Kayla Sinnet)
  • In my perspective it should stay because it’s fun and healthy (Cate)
  • It’s one of the fittest sports (McKenzie)

Solutions:

  • We should do what the big end do and play on different days (Kayla Swan)
  • We can make up our own rules (Kimberley)
  • I think the school should get astro turf so there are less injuries (Jayden)
  • P1 &P2 can play against P3 (Jayden)
  • Teachers should pick the teams (Kayla Sinnet)

Our debating team AGAINST football:

  • I feel football should be banned because people argue about which team won (Abbey)
  • I think people keep on getting hurt too much (Ben)
  • I think the ball goes out the pitch a lot and hits people. There is a lot of shouting (Scot)
  • Ban football because it’s very noisy when people play football and if someone who wasn’t playing got hurt no one would notice (Brendan)
  • I think football should be banned because players shout at other players and make up their own rules about free kicks, teams and penatlies (Aiden)
  • I am sure that there are more games when there are arguments (than no arguments) enjoying the game (Sam)

Science Week – p4/3

We designed space buggies after brainstorming some ideas. Our criteria was to design a working model of a Moon buggy, with moving parts. We had to draw a diagram and gather resources, a big thank you to everyone that brought in junk. Tomorrow (Thursday 15th March) we are having an open morning to showcase our week, if you are able to make it along we are gathering in the school assembly hall at 9am. We hope you can make it 🙂.

P4/3 learning sign language

We had a very successful few days as we extended our sign language vocabulary. We learned to sign 5 little monkeys and we performed it to each class and most people were able to guess what the song was. The Nursery was particularly pleased to watch us and tried to learn it too! As my son Jamie is deaf he was our invited guest and we performed it to him to his delight! On Friday we learned the alphabet and practised our names. Well done guys, it is wonderful to make everyone feel included.
