Primary 4/3 Learning in Maths

After our SmartStart we moved on to our number work.  We began by counting up in tens on and off the decade.  We realised that the most challenging part of counting up and back in tens was when we went over 100 because the pattern changed- so this was the bit we practiced the most so we could get better at it.  eg  79,89,99,109,119,129,139,129,119,109,99,89,79  We still need a bit more practice but it was getting easier!

We then went on to adding numbers together.  Some of us were using ten frames, some of us made bundling sticks to help us add big numbers together and some of us used empty number lines to show our thinking when we add big numbers together.  We all worked in pairs so we could discuss our thinking. All of our tasks were challenging at the start but by talking it through with a friend and asking questions, it soon got easier and we were all successful!
