Day for Change in P1b

Today we took part in Day for Change by dressing down and donating £1 to UNICEF.  This year’s Day for Change focussed on Article 28- The right to an education.  We learned that some boys and girls do not get to go to school because they do not have enough money or because their school has been destroyed.  We read a story about a girl called Angita from Madagascar whose school was destroyed by a bad storm.  We learned that UNICEF can help build schools for children like Angita and that our money will help with this.  We drew pictures of Angita’s school before and after UNICEF’s help and thought about how lucky we are to have our school!  We were delighted with our Day for Change stickers at the end of the day.

Thanks for taking part,

Pupil of the week – Sasha Brown

Table of the week – Giggly Gang

We have had two birthdays this week – Dave and Jordan who are now 10 years old!

In maths this week we have been building on what we learned about shapes and now we are able to identify angles in different shapes.

Through our topic on Victorians we have been learning how to write instructions to make toys. Some of us found it a bit tricky and we soon realised that if we miss a step out then whatever we are making won’t work so it’s important to think the task through.

We made a toy theatre this week. The class were really enjoying the task and Jay was very imaginative  and  even made a backdrop for his one!

In music we are continuing our work on the classical composer Johannes Brahms. We have been comparing the lullaby he wrote with his piano concerto. After a lot of discussion about the similarities and differences of the two pieces we realised that although they are both different they are also both waltzes. Ava and Sam danced to both pieces of music to demonstrate this.

Sorry there are no pictures this week to accompany our blog but it would seem I had the camera on the wrong setting !

Have a great weekend.

P2G

We have been very busy in P2g this week!  We have learned  a lot about money and how to use it, and have done lots of good learning in our shop.  Following on from decorating our Gingerbread Men, we have been writing stories about him.

For UNICEF Day For Change 2014, we heard about Angita and learned what happened to her when a cyclone hit her house.

Next week we are very excited about our new magic cauldron which will help us with our spelling.

DAY FOR CHANGE IN p7b

WE WERE LEARNING ABOUT UNICEF DAY FOR CHANGE TODAY. IT IS ABOUT HELPING ENSURE THAT ALL CHILDREN GET THEIR RIGHT TO EDUCATION. WE WERE UPSET TO HEAR THAT THERE ARE MANY REASONS CHILDREN DON’T GET AN EDUCATION…

Declan S: 57 million children don’t go to school. Some of the reasons are that there aren’t enough schools and there aren’t enough teachers.

Abbie: Some don’t get to go because of poor weather conditions and also because there aren’t food facilities.

Josh: There is also the fact that school is too far away and they have to walk 5 or 10 miles to get there. Another reason is that some of the teachers aren’t qualified.

Christopher S: Some children can’t go because there isn’t enough space or because there isn’t clean water or toilets.

Alistair: The other reason is because some children are forced to work or look after their family instead of going to school.

WE WERE PLEASED TO LEARN HOW UNICEF IS TRYING TO HELP…

Isla: They are raising money to build new schools and improve the schools which are already there.

Rebecca: They are also sending over a School in a Box which contains things like rubbers, rulers, pencils, books, clocks etc.

Alexander: They are putting in clean water pumps into schools so the children have something to drink.

Emma: They are putting lunch facilities into schools so children can get warm, nutritious food.

Taylor: They are building learning centres which children can go to at different times of the day or at night.

Luke: They are training up and supplying teachers who can provide a quality education.

WE ALSO LEARNED ABOUT MALALA YOUSAFZAI AND HER INCREDIBLE STORY:

Christopher A: Malala is a girl who is now 16. She is from Pakistan. Five years ago she started writing an online diary complaining about the way girls are treated in her village.

Tom: Girls weren’t allowed to go to school and were treated differently from the boys. She spoke out against the Taliban terrorist group.

Rabeea: She was going home from school on a bus and the Taliban shot her in the head because she was speaking out against her. She went to hospital and they managed to save her. Now she is still speaking out and her message is that girls should be treated the same as boys and get the right to an education.

WE FOUND MALALA’S STORY VERY INSPIRING…

Zenaib: Malala has inspired me because she has spoken out and still does and she isn’t afraid of anyone. She is trying to get rights for girls for education.

Christopher A: Her story has inspired me too because no matter how many threats she got from the Taliban she is still pushing forward to get her voice heard and improve conditions for girls in Pakistan.

Josh: I think she is very brave to stand up to the Taliban and speaking out on behalf of girls in Pakistan to have a right to an education.

Rabeea: I was amazed by her story because she was the youngest ever person to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize which has been won by people like Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

Louise: I think she is very inspiring because she stood up for her rights and everybody else’s rights and she believes in her own personality.

Christopher S: I think she is inspiring because after being threatened and almost killed she is still talking out about what she believes.

Isla: I find her really inspiring because no matter how many times they threatened her or tried to kill her she didn’t give in.

Mr Berginis: I find the story of Malala very emotional, especially seeing everybody raising their hands in the video and saying “I am Malala” to show their support.

WE DID OUR OWN TRIBUTE TO MALALA…

Class 3 Maths Mission

On Wednesday we had a new item on our timetable.  It was called Maths Mission Time.  During this time we played 3 maths games as a class.

Geordie – We played Buzz.  It was cool.  We played it for the six times table.   It was quite tricky.

Josh – We played the Place Value game on the Smartboard.  I liked it the best.

Cary – I liked Silent Ball the best.  You had to throw the ball to another person and say their name.  Next time we will ask maths questions when we throw the ball.

Liam – I liked throwing the ball.  Mrs Stewart threw the ball to me.  I felt happy.

Next week we will play some of these games again and maybe learn some new games also.  We can’t wait!

Act like an Egyptian…

This week we took part in a really fun Drama lesson which involved the class working together to act out the different types of people in Ancient Egypt.

We acted out the roles of:

-Pharaoh

-Nobleman

-Scribe

-Farmer

-Slave

In Drama we have been learning about:

-Facial expression, body movements and expressions in our voices.

I am very impressed with the whole of P3W and their performances! They have been giving very good feedback to their peers on how to improve. We are going to working on 2 stars and a wish!

Class Dojo winner: Jennie Armstrong

Raffle ticket winner: Samantha McMillan

Pupil of the week: Yasmin McKinnon for fantastic researching skills when finding out facts about Ancient Egyptian Gods.

Great Playtground Behaviour: Megan Forrester for always being polite and joining in playground games with her friends!

Spelling home learning

This week we have been challenged to write a story using our spelling words which have the ea sound.

One day I went to the SEASIDE for some HEAT.  I saw my friend Johnny, we played in the sea for a wee while.  Then we went to get lunch, in the queue we MET a strange looking spider,  It was SPINning a WEB on a LEAF.

I said ‘Who are you?”

The spider said ‘WHICH boy are you?’

I said ‘ My name is Tobin and this is Johnny.  Would you like to join us for a cup of TEA?’

‘No thanks’  it said ‘I’m a spider.  I would prefer a fly, do you have any?’

‘No I don’t have any.’  I said and we EACH had our lunch.

Victorian school day in P5m

P5m had a Victorian School day on Wednesday afternoon. We follwed Victorian school rules which were VERY strict! No fidgeting and no asking questions – imagine! A lot of us found it really hard to follow the Victorian class rules!
We followed a Victorian timetable for the afternoon. We did poetry recital and if you were not able to recite the poem correctly you were put in the corner with the Dunce’s hat on. We then did an object study on the potato, how interesting! We practised our times tables and the alphabet, sang hymns and practised Copperplate writing – it was very hard!!
Fortunately Mrs McClafferty did not have to cane anyone, but I think I was pretty scary!
Ali thought the Victorian classroom was horrible and Travis felt the Victorian’s had bad teachers, but found the Dunce’s hat funny!
Lily learned that maths was called Arithmatic and children had to wear a Dunce’s hat if they made a silly mistake!
Cameron learned that Victorian schools were scary and they used ink to write.
Abby enjoyed learning about the potato and enjoyed Drill.
Mirren thought the Victorian school day was fun and scary!
Emma C learned that children had to sit in rows in the classroom.
Sophie learned about what Victorian children wore to school (no hoodies) and that school was very strict!
Emma B learned that the children had to line up in two rows, a boys row and a girls row and had to line up tallest to smallest.
Charlie learned that Victorian children had to have a hand and shoe inspection and teachers in Victorian times were alot stricter.
Ross learned how to bow to the teacher (and did it very well)!

I think it’s safe to say that the class prefer to school the way it is today but we all had  great fun!

P2 Cushion Club

This week the P2 Cushion Club did some baking.  They made shortbread.  They really enjoyed when Miss Henderson joined them to learn how to do this too. They used good spreading skills and all listened to instructions very well.  All of them had the chance to carry out every activity but they all decided that the best bit was when they got a hot bit out of the oven.  They thought that when it was cold the next day it was not soo good.  Some of the staff enjoyed their hot bit too!

Balbardie Bloggers!

It’s great to see so many of our children and families commenting on the class blog posts each week. Thank you to everyone for posting your comments.  Please feel free to leave comments on any or all of the blog posts as the children in classes really like reading these and seeing that others at home and in other classes are reading about what they’ve been up to.  Happy blogging:)

Scots writing

In drama we have been performing plays in Scots.  One of the plays we worked on was Th Thee Wee Grumphies (The Three Little Pigs).  In writing we had a go at writing the story of the the three pigs in Scots!

Th’ thee wee grumphies.

Lang lang ago in the days o lang syne, there were three wee pigs.  The three wee grumphies had such braw faces.  Johnyny the Dowper was a funny pig.  Slaverie Sam was a daft pig.  Alan was a smart pig.  There was also a muckle bad wolf.  The grumphies were blethering in the ferm, they decided to leave the ferm to live their lives.

Johnny the Dowper saw a mannie wi a cairtie it was awfy full.  He said “Hey mannie wi a cairtie, can I get a daud o straw?”

The mannie said “Aye!”

Johnny the Dowper bigged his hoose in 5 hours.  Oh no the wolf came!  He said “Little grumphie, let me in.”

Johhny the Dowper said “I’m no daft!”

The wolf heched and peched and bloo the hoose doon and ate Johnny up in one gulp.

Slaverie Sam saw a mannine wi a cairtie.

He said “Hey mannie wi a cairtie, can I get a daud o widd?”

The mannie said “Aye!”  Slaverie Sam bigged his hoose in 6 hours.  The muckle bad wolf came and he said “Little grumphie, can I come ben?.”

Slaverie Sam said “I’m no daft!”

The wolf heched and peched and bloo the hoose doon and ate Sam up.

Alan saw a mannie wi a cairtie of stanes.  “Hey mannie wi a cairtie, can I get a daud o stanes?”

The mannie said “Aye!”  Alan bigged his hoose.  The wolf came!  He said “Little grumphie, can I come in?”

Alan said “I’m no daft!”

The wolf heched and peched but he couldn’t bloo the hoose doon.  The muckle bad wolf climbed up the hoose and went doon the lum.  But the wee grumphie had put a muckle pot under the lum and the fell into it.  The wee grumphie ate the wolf for his dinner!

Our week flew by so quickly – it’s Monday again!

We researched interesting places to visit in Edinburgh and completed our posters which will tempt tourists to come and visit Edinburgh. We then used this knowledge to write postcards as if we were on holiday in Edinburgh! We also looked at how newspapers are set as we’ll be writing our own news article this week.

In maths we are still busy learning our maths facts and we are getting better and quicker. Today we got to play on our giant, floor grid. We played in teams and had to ‘connect 4’ to win. It was great fun.

In art we created a sponge sea backdrop for our silhouetted Nessie. They look really cool.

Bye for now.

Learning about Scotland

Learning Across the Curriculum

Class 1 have been learning about Scotland.  This week we have been locating Scotland on the world map. We have also been learning about traditional Scottish clothing.  We designed our own Scottish outfits on the SMARTboard and enjoyed trying on kilts.

Miss Cameron taught us how to weave paper to create our own tartan.  We selected our favourite colours and were careful to weave the paper under and over. Look at our fantastic work!

We have also been learning about Scottish food and this week we made some delicious shortbread.  We read the recipe very carefully and measured out the ingredients.  Some of our P2 friends helped us to make the shortbread.  We enjoyed tasting the shortbread when it was ready and took some home to share with or family.  We are looking forward to more Scottish cooking in class 1.

Numeracy and Mathematics

We have been trying very hard at maths time.   We have been investigating with non-standard units of measurement to measure height and can order and sort objects according to their height.  Here we are, hard at work…

Class 3 Eat Cake!

On Tuesday Class 3 went out and about to Lana’s Cafe.  We set our targets before we left and evaluated them when we got back.  Mrs Stewart and Miss Robertson were very excited as they treated themselves to a delicious piece of cake.

Josh – I liked the cafe.  My target was to pay for my food at the till.  I did great.  After my snack I talked to Cary and it was good.

Cary – On Tuesday we visited Lana’s cafe. I had chocolate cake. I loved it and would like to go back next month. Lana said I was very polite.

Callum – Out and About was really good.  When I found out we were going to the cafe I was excited.  I had a Cake Pop.  I’ve never had one of those before and I thought it was good.

Geordie – I was sick and I couldn’t go to the cafe.  I went to Westfield Primary on Monday and Wednesday. I had lunch with Reece at Westfield which was awesome.  I would like to go a full day to Westfield Primary from the start of the day right till the end.

We are all really looking forward to our next Out and About trip to the cafe.

Our Topic Coninued…

This week in school we explored the book Katie Morag and the Big Boy Cousins.  In this story, Katie Morag and her cousins made Granny Island feel sad by not listening to her.  We thought about how we can sometimes make people feel and wrote sorry cards to Granny Island.

Last week Mr MacDonald told us that the weather can be very stormy on islands.  We heard about storms in the books Katie Morag and the New Pier and Katie Morag and Tiresome Ted.  As a result, we painted our own storm pictures.  We used grey for the dark sky and blue for the sea.  We mixed a little white in the blue and used wavy brush strokes to create the waves.  We also chose a boat to stick onto our paintings and used cotton buds to create lightening in the sky and foam around the boat.  They look fabulous hanging outside our classroom.

p7b go dancing at Bathgate Academy!

On Thursday we went to Bathgate Academy to take part in the annual p7 ceilidh. We joined with pupils from p7m as well as schools such as Boghall Primary, Blackburn Primary, Murrayfield Primary and Simpson Primary and it gave us a chance to get to know some of the pupils who will be our classmates in S1. We showed off the dance moves we have been learning in PE this term by doing the Canadian Barn Dance, Gay Gordons, Military Two-Step, Strip the Willow and Dashing White Sergeant. We also got to sample some tasty haggis bon-bons which had been prepared by the Home Economics epartment. The finale to our ceilidh was to join together in a big circle and sing the Robert Burns classic: Auld Lang’s Syne.

Dean: It was fun and it was good to meet with pupils from other schools.

Fraser: It was a good experience because I enjoyed dancing with my classmates.

Amber: We had lots of fun and some funny moments.

Alistair: It was great to see pupils who used to be at Balbardie and catch up with how they are getting on.

Zenaib: I found it fun and enjoyed dancing with the pupils from the other schools.

Louise: I really liked the haggis bon-bons.

P2e

This week we have been doing lots of mental maths. Our favourtie game is Harry Potter maths. We enjoy challenging each other and we are getting much quicker at adding within 20. We have also been practising our spelling words every morning as we know this is one of our main targets this term.

On Wednesday morning we had our Shared Start. Thank you to everyone who came along to see what we have been learning. We were showing our parents the different ways we can practise our spelling words and tricky words.

This week we have been learning about electricity. We now know where electricity comes from and how we can stay safe in our homes and school. We know not to touch electrical items when our hands are wet and never touch a light bulb.

On Thursday we went to the library to vote for our favourite book. We listened to three stories and then had to choose our favourite.

Awards:

Pupil of the Week: Cameron

Class Dojo: Evie and Holly

Table of the Week: Clever Clogs

Playground Helper: Charlie

Breakfast Club: Keira

Have a nice weekend!

P5d

We have had great fun in the class this week. In maths we can now all identify the sides, corners and angles in a shape. We can identify shapes that tile and have enjoyed making tile patterns. We are now learning about 3D shapes and some of us have used polydron to make nets.

Sasha B – I have learned about triangles. There are three kinds – isosceles which has two sides the same length, scalene which has three sides all different lengths and equilateral which has three equal sides.

Joe M – I really like doing tessellations and that means it’s a shape that tiles.

In writing this week we have been writing a biography of Queen Victoria. We used books and the internet to find information.

Ray J – I didn’t know that I knew so much about Queen Victoria until I started writing about it and I know that’s metacognition because we have been learning about that. It’s knowing what you know and being able to show it.

Teamworking – We worked with a partner to build a paper aeroplane. The tricky thing was we were each only allowed to use one hand and the other hand had to be behind our back.

Becky H – It was really hard and the best way to get the job done was by talking to each other.

Dave J – I thought it was quite easy and lots of fun.

Jamie and Sam having fun!

Have a great weekend.

Broons Aroon Scotland! P4g

This week we made yummy shortbread. We had to follow the recipe exactly and learned knew baking words like cream, score and press. Thank you to Mrs McNeill for doing this with us. Miss Goff said she was so proud of us and gave our class 50 popcorn seeds as Mrs McNeill said our behaviour was fantastic and she had a very enjoyable afternoon with us!

For storywriting this week we added to our personal writing booklet. We had to try and sell our own house using persuasive language! We really enjoyed this activity and here are a few examples of our powers of persuasion:

–      This house has lovely qualities with two amazing stained glass windows and a stunning dining room. It also has three fabulous bedrooms with sunlight shining in every morning. (Louise)

–      This house has a lovely relaxing bathroom and the biggest bedroom has an en-suite. There is a dining room with a beautiful view onto the beautiful garden. It is so nice you just can’t miss it! (Jane)

Would you buy these houses???

Also this week we enjoyed making up a dance to Calvin Harris’ Bounce! We choose our own teams with mixed boys and girls then performed to each other. The most popular dance move was fist pumping in the air haha! We even asked Miss Goff if we could continue to work on dance.

For art we were asked to blend colours of black and white to make various shades of grey. We then painted a portrait of Robert Burns. Here are a few of our paintings:

Lastly we have finished our 3D map of Scotland. What do you think?

This week’s Special Person is Kiera H because:

  • She is the bestest friend in the whole world (Kiera B)
  • She has a great personality
  • She is very kind to all of us
  • She is helpful
  • She is very smart and helps others with their learning
  • She has a good sense of humour
  • She has a vivid imagination
  • She is a good team player (playing Pickles well in a game)
  • She is a fabulous performer! She can dance, she can sing and she can act!
  • She has a great nature!
  • She is very confident in front of an audience
  • She is very friendly to everyone
  • She is a very good role model
  • She is very helpful and caring to the little ones in our school
  • She is cute and pretty!
  • She is awesome!

Question of the Week: If you were to meet Robert Burns, what question would you ask him?

Have a super duper weekend!
