Windy Beach Trip
The whole school went down to the school on Tuesday afternoon. We made some beach sculptures and decorated some rocks with pastel crayons.
Rainy Day playtime surprise!
The weather has been really poor today so we have stayed in at playtimes. Mrs Fraser had a big surprise – we have received funding for outdoor blocks which arrived last week. The children got to open the boxes at lunchtime and started playing with the new blocks. it was a bit like Christmas!
Urafirth Fun Day
The children had an amazing time at the Fun Day yesterday. The whole school was involved from nursery to P7. Among the attractions there was a water slide, sports, slime, soft play, camping, circus skills, candy floss, waffles, etc etc!
Everybody was really tired by the end of the day but we all agreed it had been super fun. Alex from the Ability Shetland was able to come and help us with the candy floss and den building.
It feels like a good end to the year given the current restrictions but we are hoping we can have a Summer Fayre next year and hopefully some fundraising at the beginning of the next session.
Primary Outdoor Learning
All the primary classes are off to the beach in their new waterproofs funded by Enquest and the PSA. The are investigating making music outdoors using different natural materials. This is our December challenge in our new Outdoor Learning policy.
Fantastic Fundraising!
Well done to the Nursery who managed to raise £741 through sponsorship for their Wellie Waddle! Here are some of the children and staff presenting the cheque to Stephanie Bain of Ability Shetland.
Cal Major Paddle Boarder
P4-7
Today Cal Major, a vet and paddle-boarder, visited our school to tell us about her adventures paddle-boarding around the Isle of Skye. Amazing!
Cal took 12 days to travel around the island. She slept in her tent on the beaches at night. She saw many amazing and beautiful sights on her journey but also some that made her sad. Many of the beaches were covered in plastics.
Cal is passionate about reducing the use of plastics. She told us that the oceans give us half of our oxygen and how important it is to look after them, not just for ourselves, but also to protect marine wildlife.
We thought of lots of ideas for reducing or recycling plastic such as: re-use plastic water bottles or use a metal one; use glasses or pottery cups; re-use plastic bags or use cloth ones; use paper straws; and pick up litter from the beaches.
We really enjoyed Cal’s visit and hope she can come back to see us again.
A trip to da banks
Instead of gym this afternoon, P5 – 7 took Mrs Fraser for a look along the banks. We headed out the voe and found lots of cool driftwood and other flotsam and jetsam. It was a good mini adventure so next week the class are going to show Mrs Fraser the other direction.
Impromptu School Trip, involving a Pilot Whale?
A phone call from one of our grandparents led to an impromptu visit to the local Boat Shed near Stonecouple. A whale had been washed up, dead, onto the shore…
Jan and Pete from Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary had been to visit and were able to confirm it was an older pilot whale. The reason it died is not yet known.

West Sandwick beach
Thanks to Brian the bus driver for shuttling us to the Toft ferry, the Old Haa, Burravoe Primary, Mary’s shop in Aywick, Mid Yell playpark, West Sandwick beach, back to the ferry and returning us to school.
