Littoral Art Project

This afternoon all of Primary 6 and 7 went to the museum to attend a workshop run by the artist Julia Barton. The whole project aims to get young people thinking about the scale and nature of marine pollution and carries on from the CSI project last summer.

In the main section of the exhibition there was a huge model map with plastiglomerate (plastic) rocks made into islands. They had names like Litter Skerry and the Polymer Sea. We also looked at the different types of plastiglomerate rocks that have been found on Shetland’ s beaches. It is incredible to see how widespread they are now and to think about the damage that they do to the environment and how long they will be around for.

Let’s hope our Primary 6/7 s help to make a difference in future in solving these problems. img_0984 img_0993 img_0994 img_1002 img_1005 img_1008 img_1014

Library and Tesco visit

On Thursday we had a really interesting morning in Lerwick. Primary 6/7 spent an hour in the library with Marghie West. She showed us all around and it was really interesting to go  upstairs, downstairs and into the resource centre. As it was Poetry day, a few of us wrote poems.

After a snack and a play in the park, we went to visit Tesco. We learnt about the different types of foods that they stock, looked around their storage area  and went into the freezer – brrr!

We then went to look at the fruit and veg and it was amazing to see the range of countries that they come from – lots of food miles! Finally we tasted lots of different foods and some of our class even liked the grapefruit juice!!!

Maasai Village Meeting

We have been finding out about the Maasai people and the impact of tourism in their region. We had a village meeting and everyone had to play a role. There were village elders, park rangers, hotel workers, young maasai, shopkeepers and ecolodge owners. We found out about the lives of the people and then had a meeting to explain what the problems were. There were some really good presentations and lots of questions too.
