P6/7 BAND DAY – Let’s the Music Begin!!

🎸 P6/7 Band Day – Let the Music Begin! 🎶

Today, P6/7 are swapping their usual classroom routine for a day filled with music, creativity, teamwork, problem-solving and, hopefully, lots of fun and laughter!

Our Band Day is all about bringing learning to life through music, with lots of opportunities to develop skills across the curriculum while working together.

🎤 Creating Our Bands

We’re kicking off by exploring what makes a band unique. Working in groups, the children created their very own bands, choosing a name, designing a logo and creating a banner that could accompany them on tour!

This was a fantastic opportunity to develop creativity, communication, teamwork and decision-making. The children had  to listen to one another, share ideas, compromise and work towards a common goal.

💰 Band Budgets – Maths in Action!

Being in a band isn’t all about performing! Our budding musicians  also had to think about the financial side of the music industry.

Using a range of mathematical skills, they tackled budgeting challenges linked to organising a tour or releasing a single. They had  to calculate costs, make decisions, work within budgets and explain their thinking. This created some great discussions.

We’ll also used  our PACE grids (Prepare, Apply, Challenge and Extend) to encourage independence, problem-solving and different levels of mathematical thinking.

This brought together our numeracy learning with real-life financial education, helping the children understand why maths matters beyond the classroom.

🎵 Lyrics, Language and Literacy

Next, we turned our attention to the words behind the music!

We had a little boogie and  then listened to the songs and explored their lyrics to identify examples of figurative language and other literary techniques, including similes, metaphors, hyperbole and alliteration.

The children boogied hard , listened carefully, discussed and identifyed how songwriters use language to create meaning, emotion and imagery.

It was a brilliant way to connect our literacy learning to something the children encounter in everyday life, while developing listening, comprehension, vocabulary and analytical skills.

🎹 Becoming Music Producers!

Our bands then had the chance to create some music of their own using Chrome Music Lab.

Through experimenting with sounds, rhythms, patterns and melodies, the children will be developing their musical understanding alongside their digital literacy and ICT skills.

There will be plenty of opportunities to explore, experiment, problem-solve and learn through trial and error!

🎨 Promoting Our First Gig!

Each band  also became music promoters, designing posters to advertise our bands’ very first gigs! We then ended the day presenting the posters and pieces of music to the class.

This brought  together expressive arts, persuasive language, visual communication and creativity as the children think about how to capture an audience’s attention.

🌟 More Than Just a Music Day!

Although today is all about music and having fun, there’s a huge amount of learning taking place across Curriculum for Excellence.

We’re making meaningful connections between:

  • Literacy and English: reading comprehension, listening, discussion, figurative language, persuasive writing and communicating ideas.
  • Numeracy and Mathematics: money, budgeting, calculations, financial decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Expressive Arts: music composition, rhythm, visual design and creative expression.
  • Technologies: digital creativity, using ICT tools and developing confidence with technology.
  • Health and Wellbeing: collaboration, relationships, confidence, resilience and recognising everyone’s contributions.

We’re also developing some really important meta-skills throughout the day:

🧠 Focusing: listening carefully, concentrating and paying attention to detail.

🎨 Creativity: generating ideas, using imagination and trying new approaches.

🤝 Collaborating: working together, negotiating, communicating and respecting different opinions.

🔍 Critical Thinking: analysing lyrics, solving problems and making informed decisions.

💪 Adaptability: responding to challenges, learning from mistakes and finding different solutions.

🌟 Initiative: taking ownership of tasks, making choices and developing independence.

One of the things I love about days like this is that the children are using so many different skills without necessarily realising just how much learning is happening!

What an amazing  day of big ideas, brilliant bands, musical masterpieces and lots of laughter! Happy Holidays everyone.
