PE for Children in Need

On Friday we started our day with Joe Wicks as part of his 24 hour PE challenge for Children in Need.

Even with all of the doors and windows open we still found ourselves working up a sweat as we squatted and did push ups throughout the morning. There was a mixture of enthusiasm and reluctance but with me joining in some who were less tempted were spurred on to participate too.

I hope I wasn’t the only one with some tender muscles later!

Remembrance

We have been focusing on Remembrance.

Through discussion the class chose what they would like to do and how we could display this for our learning on Remembrance. We looked at how the petals of a poppy can often be shown as a heart and we tried to recreate this within our painting.

We have also looked at Haiku poems and used this as a way to show our thanks for those who have been involved in any wars or fighting too. We chose a haiku poem as they should be short and powerful, we thought that this would be a great way to display our thoughts and feelings. Below are some of the poems that the class have created.

Shooting starts again.

Trenches fill with injured ones.

Always remember

Two minutes silent,

We will remember the war.

We will remember.

They all went to war.

We will remember them all.

Where did you all go?

We will remember.

The soldiers who died for us.

Now the poppies grow.

Two minutes silence,

To remember fields of war,

Where poppies grew once.

Happy Halloween

This week we have been working within groups to create a spooky story or poem using some key descriptive words. We were hoping to paint a picture for our readers. They have worked well together, planning their activity, we shared all of our creations and assessed each other and ourselves against our own success criteria.

Today we spent the afternoon making our own spooky picture. We learnt how to use the oil and aqua pastels – how to blend them together to create a smooth gradient within our pictures. I think they all did a great job as you can see from the image above.

Enjoy your Halloween everybody.

Final day of term 1

Movie afternoon!

We made it through term 1 and decided we should celebrate with a movie afternoon. We made our own movie tickets, brought in some movie snacks and settled down for a much deserved, relaxing afternoon watching The Willoughby’s.

There has been a lot of change to deal with this year and the class have adapted to it all so well. They have worked with enthusiasm and taken any changes in their stride. There was a lot of excitement for our last day and I’m delighted to have shared this first term with them.

Enjoy the holidays P4/5 I shall look forward to seeing you all again after the break!

A P4/5 update

Sorry for the late hello for the year. I have been having some issues getting on to the page – that should all be sorted now! I wanted to give you a quick update on what we are doing in P4/5 this year.

Topic News

From now up to Christmas in topic work we are focusing on learning about local history including some key events and people. We have found some subjects that we would like to learn about and the class have decided which of these they would like to investigate further. So far we have been looking at The Green Lily in which winchman Bill Deacon lost his life and for which the lifeboat crew were awarded medals for gallantry.

Although we are not able to have visitors in school at the minute we fortunately have a link to the Coastguard Helicopter – Dave Wells. He was happy for us to video call him whilst he was at work and he showed us around the helicopter and discussed the modifications that are now available since the loss of Bill Deacon. This also gave the class an opportunity to ask Dave many questions about what it’s like to be flying Oscar Charlie.

Stations activities.

This year we have introduced some changes to the way we are operating both our language and maths lessons. We have a focused stations approach which the pupils appear to be enjoying and excelling in. Through the stations activities we are able to have short, focused sessions in small groups ensuring that we have some focused teaching time, chance to apply our learning and introduce some ICT too. The pupils have adapted to this well and many of them are starting to see the benefits and are willing to push themselves to achieve more too!

Nurture.

Our class has been fortunate to have a dedicated weekly nurture lesson conducted with both myself and Mrs Leslie – we have named it Awesome All Stars this was decided by the class. The name highlights the fact that we are all stars and have something important to contribute to our team and those who come into contact with us day to day. Also, that we should be proud of the awesome individuals that we are and our part in making our P4/5  team awesome too.

Money for play time equipment.

The school has been presented with £300 from the Hoswick visitor Centre – the Sumburgh Fire Station suggested that our school would be a worthy cause. This money has been split between the 5 classes and we have been looking at how we can spend it for maximum benefit to us. As we are currently restricted to playing in our own class areas and we have limited resources to share we have decided to use this money to buy some play time equipment for both outside and wet play times. We are looking forward to the arrival of our orders any day now.

ICT

Lockdown was quite a shock for all of us; glow and Teams was thrust upon us with no chance for pupils or staff to gain any experience with it. We are therefore using a dedicated ICT lesson each week to build our confidence in the options available to us through both of these packages. The confidence of the class has grown a lot with these dedicated sessions and we will continue to build on this further to boost our understanding.

Now that I am able to access the blog page I will try to keep you updated more often!

Spring Holidays

Good afternoon everyone.

I hope you are all well  and have been able to enjoy some of the lovely spring sunshine we have had these last few days.  Now the holidays are here you can put your home learning packs aside and enjoy a well earned rest (parents and carers too!)

Stay safe and healthy and I’ll be in contact with some new activities after the holidays!

Mrs Moar checking in

Good afternoon everyone.

I hope you and your families are all well and that you are managing to do some work from your home learning pack each day.

Here is something you can try-Topmarks maths website (we have used it in class) 7-11 year olds, mental maths, daily 10-choose your level of difficulty but do try to challenge yourself!

Primary 4/5 Class assembly

Primary 4/5 presented their learning at their class assembly on Friday 14th February. They had been working hard practising and were very enthusiastic and excited for the big day. In spite of a lot of illness in the class throuought the week most managed back for the big event. Thankyou to the children who learned extra words or took on extra duties at the last minute to fill in. We had no shortage of volunteers! It was great to see so many family and friends there to support the children and I think they did an amazing job with their presenting and acting skills. A great big well done to everyone in primary 4/5!

Primary 4/5 cooking dinner!

Last week we prepared, cooked and enjoyed eating our starter course of vegetable soup made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

This week we have enjoyed preparing, cooking and tasting a main course of mince, tatties, cabbage and parsnip, again all from locally sourced ingredients.  As you can see from these bowls everyone enjoyed our taster meal leaving nothing for the leftovers bin!

So watch this space to see what the last group will make for our pudding!
