Debi Gliori

We did a glow meet with Debi Gliori along some other small schools. Before the glow meet we got out all the Debi Gliori books we could find and compared her books with Jon Klassens drawings and there different styles. She told us more about her different books and drawing tips how to draw like her. She went into more detail of a book she wrote called Dragon loves penguin we received a copy its a good book. About her two favourite creatures dragons and penguins. so after that some of us had a go at using charcoal and drawing in her style some of us drew in Jon Klassen. Some did a Debi Gliori drawing with a hat. She likes to use charcoal and chalk to illustrate her books. She prefers to draw animals rather than humans  and her favourite colour is orange. For one of her book she drew a egg  and thought it needed a hat to keep it warm and it a mouth to talk, ears to hear, nose to smell and it ended up as a little rabbit called Alfie and now hes in one of her books. Here is her website

I have been asked to play fiddle at lots of events recently.

I played the fiddle at the Old Haa fundraiser with Lucy and Jayde. I played at the church yesterday and I played harvest home. I played at the Shetland Accordian and Fiddle Club. I played at the Shetland Accordian Fiddle Club because of the Young Fiddler if the Year.

I am practising fiddle with Lucy and Jayde tonight because we are playing at the Care Centre in Mid Yell.

Jon Klassen

At school on the 11th of September at about 11:00 we did a thing called ‘meet the author’ this time it was Jon Klassen. I like his style of books. My favourite book is This Is Not My Hat it’s about a fish who stole a hat from a big fish and he will probably get away with it. Jon Klassen  seems to like hats. He wrote another book called I Want My Hat Back. It’s about a bear who has lost his hat he asks a few animals and the last one had his hat.

MacMillan Coffee Morning 2014

On Friday the 3rd of October was the MacMillan Coffee Morning 2014. We did baking on the Thursday  for it and my group make delicious apple and carrot muffins. On Friday then we first washed our hands and then moved the furniture and put  mugs, milk, sugar and napkins on the tables. We then had lots of cakes because some of the parents baked for us, and we laid them out on trays with napkins on the trays. At home I made mars bar squares and chocolate crispys. Me and Kerry were on the raffle. Everybody bought some raffle tickets. After Everyone had left, we cleared up and then went into the classroom to work out how much money we had raised. For the raffle we raised £142.000 and from the donation tin we raised £200.000. In total we raised £324.000.

I then went to the phone and phoned the radio to tell them how much we raised and they are going to say it on the radio tonight.

On Saturday I went to the Yell Show. I went on a quad but it didn’t move, there was one I could fit on. I pretended that me and Emer went on holiday and we packed everything. Me and Emer went on the panda bouncy castle  it was really bouncy and fun. My school won a first prize for our leeks, kohlrabi and courgette. We dug up the vegetables from the school garden.

Trip to Lerwick

We went to Lerwick on the bus and we went to Mareel to the Screen Play festival it is where different films from around the world that you would not see but only in the country. The little ones went to the Museum. We went to watch a film in Spanish it was called Anina. It was a bit random because she had day dreams that did not make sense because sometimes she would have day dreams. At the end of the film we got bits of paper to rate the film on. We had to hand in the paper as we came out. At the very end we went to the Museum to meet up with the little ones.

We went to the lifeboat after lunch. We went on the lifeboat and we looked around the outside and the inside. I sat on one of the chairs it was the helm. Then we saw how the crew save the people. I learned that they do it with a hoist and they have to put the survivors into a room downstairs on the lifeboat but we did not go down.  We saw one of the crew jump overboard. We saw how they can get survivors on the Y-boat which is for inshore rescue. We came off the lifeboat and we got our photo taken and we walked over to the lifeboat station. We went into the station. We went to the room where they put on their survival suits. They put powder on the rubber neck of the suit so it does not give them irritation or rashes. Then we went into the next room. It was the history room and we saw loads of old photos of the lifeboat saving people. I learned that there was a man who got loads of awards for bravery. Then we went into the next room where they have meetings. I learned that they have a pager so they can give out massages out to the crew. It had some couches and on a picture there were loads of knots you can do. I learned that there are lots of lifeboats in the UK.

Trip to Lerwick

We all went to Lerwick on the ferry. When we got there the bus dropped us of at the museum where P1-P3, Miss Smith and Jennifer stayed to learn more about transport.  P4-P7 and Ms Breyley walked to Mareel to watch Anina which is a screen play film. It was in Spanish so we had to read subtitles. Her full name is Anina Yatay Salas which are all palindromes. We were all given paper to rate the film. The paper had  1, 2, 3 and 4 in the corners. 1 was poor, 2 was okay 3 was didn’t mind it, 4 was loved it. I rated it 4. After that we went to the museum to have our lunch and to meet back with the little ones. After our lunch we got on the bus.

At the pier we went to look at a tall ship. Then we went to the life boat. We were relived it was there so we walked across the pier where we met John who was going to go be our guide. To get on board the little ones got lifted over and the older ones took the ladder where someone met us at the bottom and helped us over. When all of us were safely onboard we went inside. There was a bench which could turn into 2 stretchers.  Also there was a ladder leading down to the bottom of the boat, we weren’t allowed down there. There was also another place which the crew went in they all had their own seats. When they have rescued passengers they put them in the bottom part of the boat to be safe however the passenger are never ever allowed in the room were crew stayed. The doctor has his own seat too. One of the crew members jumped into sea to show us how they rescued people he was called Adrian we had to yell help. The first time he got hoisted up with a hoist we had to help pull him up. Then he jumped in again to show us how they saved people with the y-boat. We had to yell help again. Then the other men Dieter and Iain saved Adrian.  When they were all on the boat Iain climbed up to show us his camera on his helmet that videos everything. He jumped in to the sea to video what it is like to be rescued.

Then we went to the Lifeboat station with John who showed us around. First he showed us the room where they kept the suits. John told us about the powder which stops the rubber rubbing on the crew’s neck and giving them a rash and it also slips on better. Everyone has their own equipment and they have their own pager.  The crew have to be no further than 3 miles away from the station for it to alarm them because they aim for a 9 minute call out. They also have their own locker where they keep their own suit and the clothes to wear underneath too. They are only two women who work there and lerwick lifeboat is the only life boat that has women and when I am older I want to join the lifeboat  as a volunteer.

Yell Show 2014

On Saturday 6th September I went to the Yell Show. First my Dad drove Rosie and I to East Yell where the Yell show is. My Dad gave Rosie and I £3.00 to spent, with my £3.00 I got silly putty, some sweeties and a free balloon that said vote YES for independence on 18th September. I got a slushy and Rosie got a twin (by the way a twin is an ice cream with a double cone). I finished my slushy and Rosie finished her twin so we went on the bouncy castle and we met Honor and Emer. We played on the bouncy castle and it was really bouncy. My Dad got Rosie and I some and I finished Rosie’s candy floss because she did not like it. I met up with my friend Ella, Kerry and Honor. We got a slushy, some candy floss we did a luck dip and in the luck dip I got a rubber hedgehog. We had a go at the hook a duck and if you hooked a duck with a star on the bottom you would win a prize. I hooked a duck with a star on the bottom so I won a prize and I won a rubber squishy thing and if you squashed it would make a bubble. I entered a cake and I got a Well Done I was pleased. That was the Yell Show for me.

The Yell Show 2014

On Saturday the 6th of September it was the Yell show. The night before I was busy preparing all the things I was entering. I made a chocolate sponge covered in Malteasers   and around it was Kit-Kats. I also put in loom band music note earrings and a chain with a treble-clef. I made bannoks with granny May because she makes really good ones. I got a 1st, a 2nd and 2 3rds. 1St for my loom bands, 2nd for my bannoks and 3rd for my different bannoks and 3rd for my cake. When we got to the show we went to see if we had won any prizes. I then went outside and saw Miss Smith and I went back in to show her the prizes that people in the school had won. I met my cousins in the hall to and my granny was looking at the haps she entered and she got the best in show knitting and first and a second. I then met up with Lucy, Chrissie and Kerry and we went around the stalls and got candy floss. We then went to look at the horses going around being shown and then we went to see how Jayde and her ponies got on. I got a spare loom from a stall and then we went to the hall again to see if we wanted to buy any cakes because it was the auctioning at 4.00pm. I bought Lucy’s sweeties, Holly’s truffles and Connie’s biscuits. Then we went to the car and went to granny and daas house to eat my cake and have a tune.
