Water Display

Over the last few weeks we worked on our Water display.  We created the background using a wax resist technique and colour mixing blues and greens.

We then cut our plastic bottles into a fish shape.  This was very tricky.  Then we taped up all the open and sharp parts of the bottle.  Next we chose the various complimentary colours of tissue paper and glued them to the bottle.  Finally, we put on the eyes.

The end result is very effective.  Well done everyone.

Thank you Mrs Ryalls for adding the fish to the background display.  Much appreciated.

Week ending 4.3.22

Literacy:  In reading, we have been working on identifying and stating facts and opinions.  We know that facts are something that is known to be true and can be proved.  An opinion is  what someone believes and it has no proof.

In Grammar we have worked on question marks;  identifying and writing questions and statements.

In numeracy we have worked on the vertical written method of subtraction with exchange.  Some of us have continued to work on subtraction facts within 20.

For art, we have created a water background display (wax resist) for our fish that we will make next week from our bottles.

It was Shrove Tuesday this week and we were delighted to be able to make and eat pancakes that day.   So the next day, we modelled a piece of Procedure Text on How to Make Pancakes.

It was World Book Day on Thursday 3.3.22.  We went on a character hunt around the school.  We found lots of characters:  Thomas the Tank Engine;  Peter Rabbit;  Charlie and Lola and Zog (and more).   We then found out what the Kingsland Staff’s favourite books were by opening videos and pictures, a collection produced by Mrs McGilp,   Mrs Scott’s childhood favourite books were Enid Blyton’s Famous Five.   Mrs Hope’s favourite books were the The Day the Crayons Quit and the Day the Crayons came home.  Mrs Franklyn Rae’s favourite book was Manfred the Baddie.  We brought in our own favourite books to read and/or draw our own inspired front cover.

In collaborative group work we worked on the skill Talking in Quiet Voices and played Chinese Whispers.

We also had a chance to finish our Mapwork of the United Kingdom and Scotland.

Week ending 25.2.22

Welcome back after our mid-term break.

In numeracy:  we have been using concrete materials to learn the standard vertical written method for subtraction with and without exchange.  We have also created tiled patterns using squares, rectangles, triangles and hexagons.

In literacy:  we have been introduced to Procedure Text Type and the structure.  It has been the c, k, ck, ch  spelling patterns that we have worked on this week.  In handwriting we have concentrated on the joins; an, ap and ar.

PE:  we are working on gymnastic skills;  we balanced, we learned different ways to rotate, and we learned different ways to travel.  We also played some games like Shipwreck and Octopus.

Music: we named instruments and guessed what instrument was being played.  We also tried to make long and short sounds with instruments.

World Thinking Day:  On Tuesday 22nd February 2022 it was World Thinking Day and the Guide and Scout organisations think about their ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ all over the world.  We posted a photo on Tuesday of whose dressed in their uniforms.

It was also Kingsland’s 12th birthday on 22.2.22 and we sang a birthday song.

Mr Harkins played some tunes on his guitar on Thursday and we got to choose what he played (if he knew it)  We also did some mapping and located cities in Scotland.

Please bring in a book to read and possibly share with the class on Thursday 3rd March for World Book Day.

Please bring into class an empty plastic 2 litre bottle for art.

Many thanks

Week Ending 11.2.22

In Literacy we have been working on plurals – adding s and es to  nouns.

Most nouns add an s (dog – dogs).

Nouns that end in – ch, sh, ss, x, or z- add es (fox – foxes, church – churches).

Nouns that end in y with a consonant before the y – change the y to an i and add es (pony – ponies, baby – babies).

Nouns that end in y with a vowel before the y, just add s (turkey – turkeys, tray – trays).

In spelling we have been using different strategies to learn how to spell some High Frequency Words ( because – big elephants can always upset small elephants).

We have been learning how to use dictionaries and atlases, using alphabetical order and contents pages.   We have studied a map of the United Kingdom and identified the countries and their capital cities.

We are still working on subtraction in number and our problem solving work this week involved different coins.  We have looked at 2D shapes and their properties and know about circles, squares, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons and octagons.  For fun we looked at heptagons, nonagons and decagons.  We used squares and rectangles to tile a pattern and we used gummed shapes to make pictures.

We used the iPads to practise patterns with 2D shapes and used Sketches School to create a picture using 2D Shapes.

This week we have been inspired by four artists who use hearts in their art to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Monday 14th.

  1. James Goldcrown, who is an American street artist who has created ‘bleeding hearts’ walls.
  2. Chris Uphues who is a street artist inspired by comic books.
  3. Romero Britto who is a Brazilian artist who creates pop art and graffiti.
  4. Jim Dine an American artist who creates sculptures.

We had great fun creating our Heart Pictures.

We wish everyone a fantastic February break.

Have fun and stay safe.

We will see everyone on Tuesday 22nd February 2022.   The MUGA

day for Primary 3 will be a Monday.

Week ending 4.2.22

This week in Primary 3:

Literacy:  We have written our Space Adventure narrative text following the correct structure.  Our spelling pattern this week was qu.  In groups using the PM Reading, we have discussed the facts and textual non fiction features.  We are continuing to learn about joins in our handwriting.

Numeracy:  We continue to work on subtraction learning ways to subtract two digit numbers from two digit numbers.  In practical maths we have worked on 3D shapes and their properties.  We can describe a shape using the terms edges, faces (curved/flat) or vertices.   We created skeleton models of these shapes using straws.

Throughout the week, we have been learning about Scotland.  We know that the River Tay is the longest river in Scotland and that Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland.  We have identified some Scottish cities;  Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, Perth, Dundee and Stirling.  We learned about St Andrew and the Scottish flag;  typical Scottish food;  the National Animal – the unicorn;  the National Flower – the thistle and some famous Scottish people.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Scottish afternoon watching the whole school virtual assembly.  Thank you to Mrs Clyde for providing a delicious Scottie dog shortbread biscuit.

Rory liked looking at all the Scottish art work that the whole school had worked on.  Kelsey liked the Scottish dancers.  Gray liked the McCoo’s that Primary 3 made.

Eli, Drew and Ayla sang Highland Cathedral to the class while Emily danced.

Our PE lessons with Mrs Edge have been throwing and catching balls and shooting in basketball.  We also did some different types of exercises.

Our Scottish Week (ending 28.1.21)

On Monday we recited our class poem The Sair Finger by Walter Wingate.   Everyone who said the poem to the class or to Mrs Scott and Mrs Cormack was presented with a Burns Poetry Certificate,   Great work Primary 3.  This can be quite a scary thing to do.

Some children entered the Burns Competition and the winner for Primary 3 was Max Caldwell and the Runner-Up was Emily Gray. Congratulations.

For the school video each table group recited one verse and we made a class video of us all reciting The Sair Finger,   This will be on the whole school Scottish video for you to watch.

We worked very hard on creating a poem about a family member in Scots.   We then had to practise saying our poem for the school video.   We hope you enjoy hearing us read them.  Here are a couple of examples of the poems we created.  A copy of this poem was sent home on Thursday 27.1.22.

We had some fun singing and doing all the actions to Head,  Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Scots.  The words we used were: Heid, Shodders, Knaps an’ Taes and of course een, lugs, mooth and neb.

We found out some facts about Robert Burns.  We listened to Auld Lang Syne and said The Selkirk Grace.   We listened to the poem To a Mouse.

Rory – Robert Burns was born in Ayrshire;

Imogen, he died at the young age of 37 years old.

Drew, he died the same day his 12th child was born;

We learned about the Scottish artist Steven Brown and his fabulous McCoo artwork.  We then created our own ‘McCoo’ in his style using oil pastels.   This has also been made into a video for the whole school Scottish video.

We used the iPads this week to reinforce our symmetry work.  We used the App SketchesSchool and the symmetry tool.  Here are two examples made by Rory and Elsie. We also played Symmetry Invaders on Topmarks

Week ending 21.1.22

Together we have been continuing to learn our Scottish poem – The Sair Finger.  We have added gesture and thought about volume and being clear when we speak.  We have recited it individually, in pairs and in groups.  Well done everyone.

We have now planned our last narrative piece of writing about a Space Journey.  We created an astronaut, an alien and a planet.  We have thought about different adjectives to describe them.  Next week, we will use everything we have learned and write our narrative text.

In numeracy, we are now working on subtraction.  We are trying to use our number bonds and link our addition learning to subtraction.

We have continued to look at Similarities and Differences in our Health and Wellbeing work and this week we have considered stereotypes and gender biased expectations.   We know that is is okay to be who you want to be, that we are unique and that we can be any kind of boy or girl.

We have had fun hearing about the story of Grey Friar’s Bobby and we used drama (in role, using language in role and still pictures) to retell parts of the story.

We are learning to work collaboratively.   The skills we have worked on are:  getting into a group quickly and quietly and gathering all necessary resources.  Today’s task was to gather all materials needed to make a jam sandwich.   After doing that, we had fun making the sandwich and of course, eating the sandwich.

Each day, 4 children have been chosen to be – Me a Special Person.  The class then write something positive around the self portrait.  The children are absolutely delighted once their portrait is returned and they read the lovely things that have been written about them.

We used the iPads this week learning about some of the Notes App features.  We got to practise our spelling patterns on Spelling City and our number work on Hit to Button or Topmarks Symmetry.

The MUGA day for Primary 3 is now a Friday.

Week ending 14.1.21

Happy New Year and welcome back.

Every January each class has a Scottish Poem to learn and recite. Primary 3 have been working on The Sair Finger by Walter Wingate.  We have learned a verse each day and have enthusiastically stood in front of the class in pairs or in groups saying each newly learned verse.  Well done everyone.   Next week we will be thinking about making sure we are speaking loudly and clearly, at a good pace and adding some actions.

You’ve hurt your finger? Puir wee man!

         Your pinkie? Deary me!

Noo, juist you haud it that way till

I get my specs and see!

My, so it is- and there’s the skelf!

       Noo, dinna greet nae mair,

See there – my needle’s gotten’t out!

        I’m sure that wasna sair?

And noo, tae make it hale the morn,

Put on a wee bit saw,

And tie a bonnie hankie roun’t,

Noo, there na – rin awa!

Your finger sair ana’ ? Ye rogue .

       Ye’re only lettin on!

Weel, weel, then – see noo, there ye are,

Row’d up the same as John !

We read The Gruffalo in Scots and enjoyed working out the meaning of the Scottish words.

In numeracy, we have been revising all the strategies we had been taught in addition.  We have been learning and chanting our number bonds to 100.   Please continue to practise using Topmarks Hit the Button.

We have continued to work on long vowel letter patterns in spelling and our words are on the website Spelling City.

In Health and Wellbeing we completed our work on Similarities, Diversity and Respect studying what we have in common and what is different.  We then chose four children to be – Me, as a Special Person and wrote all the lovely things about them around their self-portrait. Next week, every day a different set of four children will be chosen.

For 2022 we thought about a goal and designed a trainer with our New Year’s Resolution.

Rory – to learn to play the guitar

Logan – to make a very big Hot Wheels Track

Drew – to improve my gaming skills

Mia – to be kinder to my brother

Lucy – to get better at football

Ayla – to spend more time with my bunnies

Well done Primary 3, you have all worked very hard and settled back into the school routine after your holiday.

Happy Holidays

Primary 3 have had a lovely festive week.

On Monday Santa visited our class and brought us some jigsaws. The jigsaws were geography based: the world, Europe, and Great Britain.  We have throughout the week tried to finish them.

We made a seasonal tree calendar and gift wrapped it on Monday as well.

On Tuesday we made rocking snowmen Christmas cards, enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch and watch our school’s Sing-a-long video.  We also had time on the iPads and played some festive games.

On Wednesday we did some sewing of a festive stocking and made a sequins bauble for our tree.  We watched the Cinderella Pantomime and were treated to an ice lolly while we watched the show.

On Thursday we made Santa boxes and filled them with some sweeties.  We also made a little mouse with a candy cane as a tail.

Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year.  Take care and stay safe.
