We had a very busy week.

 

We explored weighing with standard units and we used the 1Kg weight and the 500g or half Kilogram weight to weigh things in our classroom. We used the balance scales for this.

 

We are looking forward to using the kitchen scales next to weigh a variety of parcels.

 

We have also been learning a new strategy of breaking down numbers to help us to calculate the answer when we are working with bigger numbers.

 

 

In HWB we are continuing to explore what makes us unique because some of us found this a tricky word to say and understand. We liked painting a self portrait, looking in the mirror to help us  and it was great fun mixing the skin colour for our face and neck. We are not quite finished our self portraits but, we are looking forward to seeing them finished and posting them on our Blog page.

 

We are still having fun exploring Night and Day in our topic work. We discovered that a rotation of the Earth around the Sun causes night and day, a revolution of the earth around the Sun takes 365 days or 366 days in a Leap year. This causes the Seasons.

 

It also takes around 27 days for the Moon to be seen in all it’s phases. Many of us are enjoying completing our homework sheet andwe have been discussing the fact that on cloudy nights we cannot see the Moon to record on our sheet.

In class we took a little quiet time to do some Cosmic Yoga Kids with Jamie. We really enjoyed her Moon story and we felt so calm when we were doing the yoga.

This has been another busy week.

In PE we learned two social dances with Mrs Scott.  We learned The Flying Scotsman and The Prince of Orange.  We had lots of fun remembering the steps and enjoying the music.

In numeracy we have progressed to adding a two digit number to a two digit number bridging over a ten e.g. 33 + 28 =.  We have also answered questions using a table and completed a bar chart.   We have created our own small survey in pairs to gather some information.

We completed our Recount Assessment Writing trying to include all the things we had been taught over the block.

In Health we looked at all our similarities and differences and recognise that we are all unique.

In Science we looked at how the earth orbits the sun and this takes 365 1/4 days.  We know that this 1/4 day is the reason we have a leap year, which is an extra day in February every four years.   We made a card model of the sun, earth and moon.

We also drew these day and night pictures of the same house.

Over the week, we have been observing the moon at night or in the morning.  So far we have seen a waning gibbous moon.

 

Book Week

Wow what a lovely week we have had sharing our favourite books in class.

For our class book, we read The Last Wolf by Mini Grey.  We then made these fantastic  Last Wolf Treehouse pictures.  Mrs Ryalls is going to display them around the school.

We were given these brilliant Book Bags from Read Write Count.  We were given our very own copy of The Last Wolf.  This is what was inside the bag.

In literacy, we wrote a Recount text about our Monday at school.  We had to choose 5 important events for our time sequence.  We really worked hard on this over three sessions.   We need to remember to use our wonderful plans to help us.

In numeracy, we are still working on addition.  We can now add on a teens number eg 34 + 15.  We add the ten first then the units.   We need to keep practising our number bonds within 20.

In science, we studied the moon and the moon phases.  We know that the moon orbits earth anticlockwise.  The moon rotates on its own axis anticlockwise as well.  On earth we always see the same face of the moon at all times as both earth and the moon’s rotation are synchronised.  Over the next three week’s our homework is to observe the moon and draw what we see.

For health and wellbeing we have recognise and named the special people in our lives.  We drew circles around ourselves with our back-up team on the inner and outer circles.

We did French again this week.  We learned the names for colours.

In PE, with Mr Harkins, we played Shipwreck and Octopus.  We also played Train Tig.

 

 

Book Week

We have had some fun exploring books for Book Week. Our focus has had strong links to Literacy.

We explored the book,” The last wolf” by Mini Grey . This was a book that was in the P3 Read, Write, Count goody bag that we took home on Monday.

We tried to act out parts of the story and we felt that we were actually in the book when we did that. There was lots of fun and laughter at the end when the story had a happy ending.

The book made us think very carefully about environmental issues and how we need to take care to look after wildlife. When hedges and trees are cut down the animals lose their homes and food. So we could be more mindful of this when we make choices.

We are looking forward to sharing books we bring in from home tomorrow.

Numeracy

We learned a new strategy this week. We had to do more than one sum to work out the answers to the scores on dart boards.

We were so proud of ourselves when we mixed the sums too. For example we had to use Multiplying and addition together to find our answers. We are going to make some dart boards to explore this with our learning partners.

Sustainable Squad meeting 1.

We had an early morning meeting and felt very grown up when the tables were rearranged to make our meeting more formal.

We took the meeting very seriously and our responses were very mature.

Here are some of the things we discussed.

P7 will be planting legacy trees in the school grounds in December and January. This will provide shelter and shading and be good for our wildlife. We can also think about the P7’s who planted them.

We are looking forward to finding out more about the polytunnel that we are going to have in Spring.

The Squad are going to request recycling bins for the playground by emailing SBC for permission.

Finally , we had a super discussion about how we can look after our wildlife in Winter.

Here are a few of our thoughts:

Make some bird food like fat balls in class.

Use less plastic or recycle old bottles to make seed/water feeders for birds.

Make fruit kebabs in class to make food for birds.

Provide more water stations for birds – even though water sometimes freezes in Winter!

Make more bug houses/hotels

Plant more flowers

What an interesting meeting we had. It was lovely to hear everyone’s ideas. We are really looking forward to making these things for the birds and beasties.

 

Writing

We continued to explore how to write a recount this week and we tried really hard to write more. This was challenging and we had to really persevere and not give up.

We wrote about getting ready for bed this week and had some fun miming this one. Being active helped us to be more creative with our writing.

 

Surprise!

Mr Swinney surprised us by dropping off some of the jigsaws and games our teacher had ordered. Mrs Ward gave each class money to spend and we are really excited about exploring our new games.

Thank you to Mrs Ward as these games will make our learning and play even more exciting.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lest We Forget

On Thursday 11th November 2021 at 11.00 am we had a minutes silence to remember all the veterans who have died in any war.   We listened to the poppy story.  We did some brilliant art.

We finally finished our dragon boxes – little homes for our imaginary dragons.

We wrote a recount text about Bonfire Night.  We followed the structure and used time connectives.

In numeracy we have still been practicing our number bonds to 10 and 20.  We started to look at bonds to 100 using multiples of 10.  We then added 9, 19, 29 and 11, 21, 31 etc by using the strategy add ten subtract one for nine and add ten add one for eleven.

We finished our  resilient super heroes.  We have to think of ourselves as super heroes when things get tricky.

Next week is Book Week and we can bring in our favourite book to share with the class.

Remembrance day

 

 

This week we have been finding out about how the poppy became the symbol of Remembrance Day.

At 11 o’clock on the 11th of November we fell silent in class for a 1 minute silence. We were respectful and thought about the ex-servicemen and women who had lost their lives in war.

We made poppy wreaths and painted our own pictures of poppy fields like the ones in Flanders, Belgium.

 

 

 

 

 

Non-fiction

We are enjoying exploring our new non-fiction books.

Bonfire weekend recount

Writing was challenging for us this week because we had to have a go at writing our recount independently. We all worked very hard at this.

Maths and Numeracy

In Numeracy we explored some word problems and learned about how important it is to read the words very carefully. this then helps us to work out what the sums is. We recorded our answers in drawings and then number sums.

For practical maths we are going to explore weighing with a variety of non-standard units like straws and marbles and we might even try Lego bricks.

 

On Friday  19th  November you can bring in a favourite book from home to share with the class. The read, write, count books look amazing this year!

 

We have been working very hard in P3 this week.

 

Our highlight was sharing the little book we made for Mrs Ward’s farewell. It was lovely to share it with her when she visited our classroom to say good bye.

We enjoyed learning about Greta Thunberg, COP 26 and climate change and we are very proud of the posters we made.

 

In science we investigated the Moon and learned that the Moon does not shine but, when the Sun is reflected on it this makes the Moon appear to light up in the night sky. We explored this with a torch and a rotating globe. This also let us see that when it is daylight on one side of the earth it is night time on the other side of the world.

We also took our learning outdoors on Thursday. We collected leaves, twigs and bracken for our dragon dens by scavenging in the school grounds. It was a beautiful crisp afternoon so, we took advantage this after all the rain we have had recently. Kingsland is very beautiful with the Autumn leaves on the ground. We then had great fun with our friends running around in the leaves.

On Fireworks day we got very creative and used chalk to recreate fireworks in the night sky. It looked like we were having our very own fireworks display in our classroom.

We wrote a recount about last week’s Hallowe’en party and our teacher helped us to write this by modelling it. Next week we are going to write our recounts independently.

Although it has been challenging learning how to set out our sums when we use our textbook we have persevered and now we are really proud of ourselves.

 

We have been reading non-fiction texts from our new reading scheme and it has been interesting exploring a wide range of topics.

We managed to finish our Haunted Houses which we did for Halloween.

Our dragon eyes are finished –  painted and varnished.  Here are some for you to see.

On Tuesday we watched a live performance of the Lorax from The Old Vic Theatre.  It was about important issues around sustainability.

We wrote a Recount Text together with Mrs Scott about our Hallowe’en Party following the text structure of:  Title, Orientation, Sequence of Events and Personal Comment.
