Welcome back Primary 3 !

We have had a very settled start back to school this week and we have been working very hard in class.

We have been thinking about friendships and what we can do to build on them and what we can do if things go wrong.

Our new Science topic is about water and we have been discussing what we already know about water. We are looking forward to investigating and doing experiments with water in this topic.

It has been lovely to be with our friends again.

Monster week

This week we have created our own monsters and written stories about them.

We planned carefully and had to remember to include a title, orientation, complication and we ended our stories with a resolution.

We had fun making our monsters with Lego and plasticine too.

We are looking forward to reading each other’s stories next week.

Wake up sleepy heads !

In Primary 3 we are learning about the human body.

Sleep is very important to humans. We discovered that when we sleep we process all the learning we have done that day. Our brains are active and working hard while we sleep.

We concentrate much better when we have had a good sleep and we feel more active. This also gives us more energy to do things.

We thought it was a fascinating fact that we do most of our growing when we are sleeping.

So, sleep is very important for our wellbeing and sticking to routines helps us to sleep well.

What colour of crayon are you?

Primary 3 spent the afternoon exploring Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers books about Crayons. We thought they were really funny and hopefully Duncan will start to look after them now he knows how they feel about being out of their packet and away from their friends.

We enjoyed working out what colour of crayon we are and we really were a mixture of colours. Just like a real packet of crayons.

We chose our own favourite coloured crayon and will write a postcard to Duncan in this colour. The crayons can be quite funny so we are looking forward to writing in this style.

Love from the crayons

Mood monsters

We designed our own mood monsters in green, yellow, blue and red colours. We are linking them to the Zones of Regulation colours.

Green = calm and happy

Yellow= getting a little cross but, in control of my emotions

Red= cross and angry

Blue= sad and low

Our mood monsters will help us to express how we are feeling very quickly. Our little buddies will help us to explore how we are feeling. Already we have seen that we don’t all feel the same way at the same time in our classroom.

Our mood monsters might change colour throughout the day and that is okay too.

Seeing stars

We tried another sight experiment.

This time we stared at a yellow, black and blue flag on the Smartboard for 20 seconds. When the flag was taken away some of us saw a navy, red and white flag. ( Stars and stripes flag ) .

We saw a different coloured flag because our eyes start to get tired when we look at things for a long time and we start to see something different.

About half of the class saw the Stars and Stripes flag and the other half saw nothing. So, we discussed the fact that experiments do not always have the same result.

Eye eye

In today’s experiment we used some coins so, we had to clean them first. We loved watching the coins getting  cleaned in the fizzy juice.

Then we closed one eye and tried to get each coin into the cup. We managed this if the cup was near. Then we tried the other eye to see if we could do better with one eye than the other.

Finally  we tried with both eyes open and  this was so much easier.

Some  of us even challenged ourselves to do the experiment with both eyes closed. This made it tricky to work out where the coins were and we had to use another sense called touch to help us out.

Like the pencil experiment we found out that using both eyes together helps us to work out the distance that objects are from us, helps us to see more accurately and we need to put less effort in to complete the task.

We were also very good at working with our partners and taking turns. We were very respectful and patient when we waited our turn and when we discussed the experiment together.

Working together again

To help us to work well together again we have been playing some quick Mental Maths games  sharing ideas and strategies with our group.

We have enjoyed getting to know each other again and we have had to be very thoughtful about turn taking. Sometimes it has been very hard not to talk over each other this week so, we are going to keep working on this next week.

It has been lovely being together again.
