We used our imaginations to think about what hope looks like. There were lots of rainbows and butterflies in our pictures because we think they symbolise hope and being positive.
For Health and Well-being we have been thinking about and discussing what plants need to flourish and grow.
We remembered the story about poppies in Flanders growing in the mud . We know they need water, soil and sunlight to be able to grow.
We couldn’t believe how tiny the poppy seeds are. There are two varieties here. One looks like ground pepper and the other looks like the pepper you have to grind. It’s amazing to think that these tiny seeds might grow into beautiful poppies.
We have scattered them to see if they grow.
At home some of the class have already been busy planting. We have peppers, courgettes, radish, lettuce, garlic and sunflowers. Some of these were planted in our gardens, allotments and greenhouses.
We have to remember to keep watering our plants and checking they are getting enough sunshine to grow properly.
With great excitement we investigated what happened to the water balloons that had spent the night in the freezer.
Some of the balloons were completely filled with ice but, others were part ice part water. This happened if the balloons had been filled with a lot of water.
We cut away the balloons and inside was ice in the shape of the balloon. It was exciting to investigate and observe the ice. There were lots of bubbles and interesting cracks and holes.
As we were doing our investigating the ice was melting with the heat in our classroom.
So, the liquid water had turned to ice then melted back to liquid water again.
We have been investigating water as a liquid. We noticed that it is wet, can be cold to touch and when we took a drink from our water bottle it didn’t have much taste.
Water takes the shape of the container it fills. It is clear and when you shine a torch light through it you can sometimes see rainbow colours.
Our water balloons are going in the freezer. What do you think will happen to the water inside the balloons?
We practiced T and U sums in the playground using chalk. It was fun working with our learning partners and exploring numbers in this way.
The hailstones storm washed our sums away but, we got the chance to talk about water in its solid state as hail and then liquid when it melted. This showed us that water exists in different states in nature.
In Science we have been investigating water. It is an element that we find in nature.
We discovered the Art work of the Japanese artist Hokusai. He made many prints from wood blocks. Here we have examples of our interpretations of Hokosai’s,”Great wave.” We used pen and then added water with a brush to create the effect of water colours.
Can you spot the boats in some of our waves? We have also been discussing whether or not the wave is a huge wave or a tsunami. What do you think? Look at the size of Mount Fuji in the distance.
We added some cranes in the sky as they are popular birds in Japan.
It was fun exploring water in Art and discussing the work of a famous artist.
Our writing focus this term is procedure. We had some fun this morning building Lego models than planning out what we will write tomorrow.
On our plan we have to have a title, a goal, a list of the materials we need to build the model then finally the steps we need to follow to make it.
Some of the picture plans are very detailed and this will help us when we do our writing tomorrow.
This afternoon we had a quick discussion about what has gone well for us at school this week.
Here are some of our thoughts,
Our teacher agreed with us and we have had a lovely week in Primary 3. A super start to the summer term!
