Lego Mindstorms

Well done to our Digital Leaders for representing Holmston at the Cluster Mindstorm Competition. They demonstrated their programming knowledge before delivering a presentation on Water Consumption and then finally getting their robot through some very tricky challenges. Thank you to Miss Bell for running the lunchtime club and to Kincaidston Primary for organising and hosting.

Fair Trade Afternoon

Last Friday we had the official unveiling of our playground charters and hosted a Fair Trade afternoon for parents and families. The pupils demonstrated their understanding of Fair Trade through a range of activities including negotiating fair prices, locating different countries on maps and making art work from Fair Trade coffee beans. It was great to see so many family members turn up to enjoy working with their children and have a cup of fair trade coffee or tea too!

Holmston – a FairAware school

Well done to our P4 Fair Trade ambassadors for leading our work in Fair Trade. As a result of their continued commitment, Holmston is now a FairAware school.

We hope you can join us next Friday (9th March) at 1.45pm as we unveil our playground charters and then move into the classrooms to share our Fair Trade journey so far. (Further details will be sent out)

World Book Day Award

We are very please to announce that thanks to the hard work of the whole school community, under the direction of Mrs Messener, we achieved a silver award in this year’s World Book Day Competition. The prize is £1000 worth of books from our school library.

Well done everyone. Please have a look at our work under the creativity tab of the website or have a look at all the winners on the World Book Day website.

The pupils and staff have had a fantastic day dressed as their favourite book characters and joining in with quizzes, competitions and shared reading.  Pupils able to go home with some new books from the book swap – what better way to spend a snowy and cold weekend than snuggling up with a new book!

School Closure – Thursday 1st March

In light of the weather warnings and the advice from Scottish Government of major disruption to travel arrangements a decision has been taken to close all South Ayrshire schools tomorrow. The Council’s communications team will also put information out using social media and the local radio.
We anticipate that schools will re-open as normal on Friday but please check the school and council websites and SAC social media for any updates.
As we were planning to celebrate World Book Day tomorrow – we will have our ‘dress as a book character’ and various events on Friday.

Euroquiz

Well done to our Euroquiz team for being excellent ambassadors for the school at the recent Euroquiz competition. They have all been working very hard remembering lots of facts and figures about Europe. Congratulations goes to Ayr Grammar for coming first.

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT HAMPER

During the Fairtrade Fortnight, Holmston Primary School, led by Primary 4, will be raffling off a hamper full of Fairtrade goods. Raffle tickets will be on sale in the school and in the playground from Tuesday 27th February until Friday 9th March.  Raffle tickets are 50p a ticket.  During the Fairtrade Fortnight there will also be the chance for the children to buy biscuits made in the school by some of our pupils.  All money raised will be donated to Fairtrade.

SAC Safer Internet Day 2018

Well done to the girls making it through to the final of the South Ayrshire Safer Internet Day 2018 competition. The presentation event was a great experience and we got to see the work by the other schools and the students at UWS. As well as a certificate, the girls won £20 worth of Apple vouchers for the school. Their entry was a fabulous clay model and poem.

RRS Committee – Spreading the Word

Our Right Respecting Committee visited the Auld Kirk on Sunday 4th February to inform the congregation about the UNCRC and share the work that has gone on in school. They explained how this ties in with our school values. Members of the Church comment on how well the pupils explained themselves and what excellent ambassadors they made.

Dress Down Day – Thursday 8.2.18

At Holmston Primary we are aiming towards becoming a Fairtrade School.

We are holding a non-uniform/dress down day on Thursday, 8th February 2018 to help us raise funds for a Fairtrade challenge that will take place during Fairtrade Fortnight 26th Feb – 11th March 2018.  Pupils are asked to make a donation to wear their own clothes. Please remember that football colours are not suitable. All contributions are voluntary

The Fairtrade campaign this year is called “Come On In” and we will be inviting parents to ‘come on in’ on Friday 9th March from 2.00pm and share our learning about the work Fairtrade does and the impact it has on people and families around the world.

Burns Competition 2018

Well done to all our pupils reaching the Burns Poetry Recital Competition 2018. The standard was very high and the judges had their work cut-out. A big thank-you goes to Mr. Gemmell for being our guest judge this year. We were also entertained by some of our musicians and P5 and P6 performed ‘Auld Lang Syne’. Once again a very enjoyable event.

Safer Internet Day 2018 – 6.2.18

During assembly on Friday, the pupils will be learning about this year’s Safer Internet Day. The theme for this year is “create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you”. Read, Write, Count P2 and P3 Parents

The Scottish Book trust is carrying out an evaluation of the Read, Write, Count packs that were sent home with the Primary 2 and primary 3 pupils earlier in the school year. If you are a parent of a child in either of these year groups please click the link below to complete the survey. There is a prize of a personal Read, Write, Count Goodie bag filled with books, games and activities for all the family to enjoy.

School Bank Urgent!

Our school bank will have to close if we cannot secure some more parent volunteers for after the Easter Break. If you are able to give up some time, once a week, this would enable us to keep the bank running. The school bank is an excellent way to support your children to budget and save. Pupils have started saving in P5 to pay for the residential trip in Primary 7.
