Farewell tour –  Harry Hedgehog and Douglas the dragon ( who hasn’t gone back to Fairyland yet as he is so fond of our class) are embarking on a farewell tour on Monday so watch out for one of them visiting your house soon.  Enjoy!

We have started exploring non-fiction books to help us find information about animals and their habitats.  We know they have a contents page at the beginning and an index at the end.  Please bring any non-fiction books you think will help with our topic.

Thank you

P7 Masterclass – Baking

Yesterday we had our first P7 only Masterclass. We started off with a simple recipe using ready rolled puff pastry, chocolate spread, banana and strawberries – what’s not to like?

The results were great and everyone enjoyed their sweet treat! Try it out at home by following the recipe below.

Sweet Puff Pastry Treats

Makes 9 individuals

Ingredients 500g Puff pastry pack strawberry slices

Banana slices

Chocolate spread Icing sugar water to stick corners

Equipment

pallet knife

teaspoon

small bowl

oven tray

baking/greaseproof paper

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200˚C/ 400˚F/Gas Mark 6,
  2. Line your baking tray with baking paper.
  3. Lay out the puff pastry out on a surface lightly dusted with icing sugar into a large square.
  4. Cut into 10cm squares (approx.), using a knife. Cut about 3cm into each corner.
  5. Carefully spoon one teaspoon of chocolate spread into the middle of the square.
  6. Place strawberry and/or banana slices on top of the chocolate spread.
  7. Dab the pastry with a small amount of water, then fold one corner into the centre, allowing for a slight overlap. Repeat with the other corners to make a windmill shape.
  8. Sprinkle with icing sugar and bake until they are golden and firm (about 12-15 minutes) where they have puffed up on the sides.
  9. Allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Conflict in Israel

Learning Outcome:

1.     I understand that religious and cultural differences have affected people in the past and present (Jews during WWII and Palestinians in Gaza).

2.     I can use my own research to share my views on current political and social issues (Gaza).

Conflict in Israel Skill:

Systems Thinking

·        How does one thing affect another?

·        Can you describe the relationship between…?

Background

Jewish people were persecuted by the Nazis during World War II. After the war ended, the Jewish state of Israel was established and Jewish people were given a safe place to live. However this meant that Arab Muslims became refugees. In addition to this, the area of West Bank in Israel has always been a place of cultural and religious conflict because both Jews and Muslims say the land belongs to them.

Task

1.     You are going to work on your own and then with a partner to research the history of the conflict in Israel. You will watch videos showing the history and some of the recent problems. You will both read different research sheets to choose the most important facts. You will then share these facts with the class.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/20436092

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y58njT2oXfE  Israel and Palestine: an animated introduction

2.     You will then be working with your partner to create a 3-set Venn diagram to compare and contrast the lives of three children living in the West Bank. Read the notes on the children and use the photographs to help you build up an idea of what their lives are like.

3.     As a class we will then discuss the relationship between WWII and the current conflict in Israel. We will look at how one thing affects another thing and the consequences of actions.

Criteria

You and your partner must:

·        take notes (key words and phrases) from the videos and research sheets

·        share your notes

·        choose the 5 most important facts from your research

·        share these facts with the class

Your group must:

·        read the notes and look at the photographs of Bilal, Tzviki and Douha

·        discuss the children’s lives and what evidence you can gather from the text

·        record the similarities and differences between the three children

·        feedback to the class your findings

·        discuss in what way your lives is similar and different to the children living in the West Bank

As a class we must:

·        look at the evidence we have about the conflicts in Israel

·        discuss the cause and effect

·        discuss the relationship between WWII and Israel

·        discuss the general consequence of actions

You have two R.M.E. sessions to complete these activities.

P5S – Fun with Language!

Image result for figurative language

In class we have been looking at figurative language and how it can make our writing more interesting. We looked at alliteration, personification and simile. Can you tell someone at home what each of these are? Can you give them an example?

Using what we know about our class novel: One Dog and his Boy we created some figurative language of our own. The results were great! Have a look …….

P5S – Amazing Algebra!

Image result for algebra

In maths this term we have been learning all about Algebra. It can be quite confusing using letters alongside numbers but with some more practice I am sure you will all have it worked out. Algebra is great for working on your mental maths skills (obviously if the calculations aren’t too tricky!) so where possible you should be trying to work out your answers in your head.

Today we played some games to help with our understanding of equations. You created your own equations with your maths partner and then we played some loop card games. Please tell someone at home what an equation is. Can you give someone at home a few equations to work out?

Here are some photographs from today’s maths session. One of our maths pairs managed to use our numbers and letters to write their names. Can you guess who it was? Have a close look at some of the equations made today. Can you work them out?

P5S – Library Visit – Parent Helpers Needed

Image result for library bookworm

Unfortunately we were unable to visit the library this week however I have organised another trip for Tuesday 9th May. We will be leaving school at 11.20 am and will return in time for lunch. Two parent helpers are needed on the day. If someone at home is able to help us, please leave a note on the blog or put a note in your diary.

Thanking you in advance.

Mrs O’Neill

P5S – Blackout!

Image result for blackout poems

In class we have been learning about Blackout poetry. We used an extract from our class novel, One Dog and his Boy, to create our own poem or statement. We had the option of linking our poem to the theme of our novel or creating something completely new. Please tell someone at home the steps we used in this task.

I was very impressed with your final pieces. They are now on the wall and looking fabulous. Well done!
