P5S – PowerPoint Workshops

Last week our Digital Leaders held workshops at lunchtime to teach their peers how to use certain aspects of PowerPoint in Glow. These enthusiastic individuals below gave up some of their lunch to learn new skills which they will hopefully put to good use during their time in Primary 5. They were all awarded with a certificate for attending the workshops. Well done!

Well done to our Digital Leaders who also gave up their own time to teach their peers some very valuable skills.

P5 – Multiplication Practice

Image result for numbers

In maths we have been practicing our multiplication skills. The times tables are used in many maths topics and it is very important that we learn them well. In class we looked at the multiplication trainer and saw how it can help you with the speed of your calculations.

If you have any spare time, or just want a little more practice, please access the link below.  Please remember to set realistic times and make sure you choose  a range of times tables – not just the easy ones! Challenge yourself with the tables you need to work on the most. This is not homework however practice does make perfect!

P5S – Brazil – A Day in the Life of …….

Image result for brazil flag

Last week for homework you were to keep a diary of a typical day: what time you got up, when you left for school, our school day, what time you go to bed. All this was so you could compare your life to that of a child from Brazil.

Today we looked at the life of Valentina from Bela Vista. Using information shared on Glow, each of you had to look at the similarities and differences between your lives. You took lots and lots of notes about Valentina’s life and used this to complete a venn diagram. Thank you to Lewis, our Digital Leader, for showing everyone how to access the information.

On one side you shared your information about your life and on the other Valentina’s. How wonderful do the completed diagrams look on your wall space? Please show your work to someone at home. Tell them some of the information you learned about Brazilian life. Are there any similarities or differences?

P5S – Brazil – Beatriz Milhazes Artwork

Image result for brazil flag

For homework, and in class, we have been looking at the work of Brazilian artist, Beatriz Milhazes.  Each of you chose your favourite painting and began creating your own version of it last week. Lots of you have found it quite tricky as these paintings contain many different shapes and colours.

I have to say I am delighted at just how well they are turning out. I cannot wait to show off your final creations. They are taking a while because the paintings are so detailed however we should have them completed later this week. Watch this space!

Here are some photographs of your designs so far.

P5S – Brazil – Mapping Task

Image result for brazil flag

Last week for our Brazil topic we had to find our where Brazil was in the world in relation to Scotland. We also had to research and find a number of important locations within Brazil and its bordering countries. What fun can be had with Google Maps!

Once we had individually recorded the information on our own maps, we transferred it to a larger group map which is now on our wall space in class. A few of our new groups need to work on their listening skills as the Pacific Ocean seems to have flooded some of Brazil’s bordering countries on the maps.  Well done to the groups who realised their mistake and fixed it in time.

Please show someone at home your completed map and tell them some information about the locations on your map. Which city is the capital of Brazil? Which is the largest city in Brazil? Can you remember how many people live there? Where are Scotland and Brazil located on the map?

Here is your book Detectives homework for the this week.

All groups (Blue, Red, Yellow and Green) should complete the second half of their book. Once you have completed the reading, please come up with 5 literal questions (questions where the answer can be found directly in the text) for your Question Master segment. Answers to your questions should also be given. Please complete a detailed illustration of an interesting part of the story. A short, written explanation should also be given.

This task should be completed in your Book Detectives jotter for Thursday 10th November.  Please remember you will be unable to participate in the class lesson if you do not complete this task.

P5S – Let’s dance a little more ……

Image result for dancing

Our Latin dance lessons got a little harder this week. We had many more “latin” dance moves to master. Girls …… wow! You certainly picked them up well, as did a couple of our boys. Next week I think we will mix it up a little more to help some of our less enthusiastic boys to pick up the moves quicker.

Have a look at our photographs and see if you can remember some of the dance moves to show someone at home.

P5S – Our First Library Visit

Image result for bookworm

Today we had a nice wee visit to Bishopton Library. Most people chose a book (or two) to read for ERIC time or as part of our Personal Reading Challenge. We will be returning to the library later this month to return our books and choose some more.

I hope you enjoy reading the books you chose today. You should aim to finish them within 2 weeks to allow you to complete the required number of books for the challenge.

A huge thank you to our parent helpers who came along with us today.

P5 – Brazil – Mapping Task

Image result for brazil flag

This week we will be using our skills in mapping to identify and locate the main cities, important areas of interest, relevant rivers, oceans and the bordering countries of Brazil.

Our learning outcome for this task is:  I can successfully use a map to locate specific places and show these on a blank map.

To extend my mental map and sense of place, I can interpret information from different types of maps and am beginning to locate key features within Scotland, UK, Europe or the wider world.SOC 2-14a

The skills we are focusing on today are:

Skills for Learning:Application: I can select specific information from a map and display this correctly on a blank map, showing my understanding of countries within the wider world.

Skill for WorkSelf-direction: I can remain on task and work collaboratively with my group members to complete a task in an allocated time.

Use the links below, and a class atlas, to find the required locations within Brazil. Please read your task sheet carefully, and work closely with your group members, to  ensure you locate as many of these places as possible within the allocated time.

You have ONE HOUR in the IT Suite to complete your research. You will also have ONE HOUR in class to complete the second part of the task. Please use your time wisely.

P5S – Google Expedition

What a great start to the afternoon! What great excitement from you all! The screaming was very loud!

Did you tell someone at home that we travelled to Brazil this afternoon and saw many areas of Rio de Janerio and Sao Paulo? On our travels we looked at buildings, beaches, artwork, and even football stadiums. We paid the famous statue, Christ the Redeemer, a visit which caused much excitement.  We learned just how high and wide it actually is. Can you remember?

Once we had our tour of Brazil we had time for a shark experience down deep in the sea before heading to the moon. We certainly got about this afternoon.

A huge thank you to Primary 4 for letting us share the Google Expedition experience today. I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction.

Thank you to Mrs McKay for being our photographer.

Good evening P5S! I hope you have had a lovely weekend after the busy week we have just had. Lots of photographs from some of our lessons have been posted. Please show them to someone at home. As always we have another busy week ahead of us. Keep reading for a rundown of your homework and reminders.

Spelling:  Unit 16 or 23 should be completed in your spelling homework jotter for Friday. Try to complete a different Creative Spelling activity from last week.

Book Detectives:  Please click the link below to see your Book Detectives homework which should be completed for Thursday.  Please remember if you do not complete the task, you will be unable to participate in the class lesson.

Personal Reading Challenge:  As discussed in class, you should read at least 4 extra books this term. You should now be well into your first book. I know that some  people are now onto their second book. Fabulous! Once you have completed a book, you should fill in your reading record which is being kept in class.

Maths:  This week you have another set of worded problems to complete in your maths homework jotter. Last week in class we chatted about how to work out what type of calculation the question is asking you to do. It can be quite tricky but we will have lots of practice this term so hopefully it will become easier as the weeks go by. We will also be practicing these types of questions in class too. Remember practice makes perfect!

Please read the instructions carefully to ensure all aspects of the task are being completed. If you are unsure as to how you should layout your work, please look at the post for “Examples of Good Work”.

Please click your group link below.

Group 2

Topic: Next week we will be looking at Bishopton and comparing it to a small town in Brazil. In preparation for this I would like you to keep a diary for a day. Choose a day this week and keep a note of your daily routine. You should consider the following:

  • What time do you get up?
  • What do you do in the morning before school?
  • What time do you leave for school?
  • How do you get there?
  • What did you do in school through the day?
  • Do you attend any clubs after school?
  • When do you have dinner?
  • What time do you go to bed?

Paper will be issued for you to complete the task on. This task should be returned to school by Friday.

Here are your reminders for this week.

  1. P.E. is on Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure you have a full kit to change into: shorts, top and trainers. Girls, please remember to bring socks if you are wearing tights. As both our P.E. sessions are going to be rather energetic, please ensure you have a water bottle with you.
  2. On Tuesday we have our first visit to the library. Please bring a suitable jacket with you as we will be going whatever the weather. If you have a library card, please bring this with you.
  3. The Christmas card orders have been sent out and are due to be returned by Tuesday 1st November.
  4. Photographs will be issued this week and are due to be returned by Thursday 10th November.

See you in the morning.

P5S – Brazil – Fact File Task

Image result for brazil flag

This term our writing focus is fact files so we kicked off our Brazil topic with a research task which would allow us to find out lots of information that we could then transfer into a fact file of our own. Each group member had to create an interesting and colourful fact file which included the following information:

  • national flag, coat of arms, bird, animal, flower
  • population, currency, religion, capital, main cities
  • landscape, areas of water (oceans/seas), climate
  • tourist attractions (landmarks)
  • national anthem
  • festivals, carnivals
  • any other important information

How did you do? Did you manage to research and take notes on all of these areas?

Our social skill for this task was:  Helping/Encouraging each other: I can encourage and help my group members to complete an individual task for my group.

This meant that if someone in your group did not have any notes on a particular area, and you did, you were to help one another by sharing your information. This ensured that the group aspect of the task was fulfilled. How did your group do at this part of the task? Did you help and encourage one another?

The completed fact files were then peer assessed by another group. Will they have the same assessment results as your group? All your fact files and your peer assessment results are now on your wall space.

P5S – Proper Nouns Practice

Image result for pencil

Our grammar lesson today had us working hard on ensuring our proper nouns started with a capital letter. You had six stations to work round and in one minute had to think of as many examples for each category as you could. The categories were: countries, towns and cities in Scotland, bodies of water (and once again, neither Clydebank or Blackpool are bodies of water), states in America, music artists and any other types of proper nouns.

Most of you remembered to include a capital letter at the beginning of your example. Some of you still have a little work to do but we will continue to work hard on this.

Have a look at the completed sheets at the end of the photographs. Can you spot your examples? Look for your initials and show them to someone at home.

P5S – Fitness Fun

Image result for skipping clipart

Term 2 is the term for building our fitness. On Tuesdays we will be working out with our Latin dancing and on Fridays we will be working our way around our fitness stations. Today we had the following stations:

  • skipping
  • shuttle runs
  • ball catch
  • step ups
  • speed bounce
  • squats

In small groups you rotated around each station and completed each task for one minute. Some were much easier to do than others. As the weeks progress we will increase the time at each station to build up your fitness.

Most groups worked very well together and those groups that had a few niggles will need to work hard to sort them out. Tasks like these require all group members to work well together and you may need to compromise at times: very good life skills to learn.

Today Lucy L was in charge of music, Chloe S was our time keeper and Kieran was our photographer. Here are some of the many photographs he took today.

P5S – Time for Triangles

Image result for isosceles triangle

Today we continued with our Shape topic and learned all about the different types of triangles and their properties. To help with your understanding  we played a sorting game where you had to look at the properties of different types of triangles and display them under the correct name. Can you remember how to spell (and pronounce) the names? They were rather tricky! Can you tell someone the name of the triangle above?

Next you all became detectives and had to solve a couple of crimes. You had to use your knowledge of the properties of each style of triangle and try to work out who the culprit was and send them to jail.

Before heading out for break, everyone had to complete an exit pass and tell me the names of all of the triangles and the properties of at least one of them. I did have a chuckle at some of the spelling! Guess what words we will be practicing next week.

Here are a few photographs from today’s lesson.

P5S – Maths is Fun!

Image result for d10 dice

This week we have been learning to add and subtract using 3-digits. This has meant we have had to “carry” and “borrow” which can be quite tricky.  We have had lots of practice and even completed a few class quizzes where we got full marks. Well done!

Yesterday in our maths pairs, we used a 10-sided dice to create 3-digit numbers which we then added or subtracted with great results. Who would have thought you could have so much fun with maths?

Have a wee nosey at our task.

P5S – Book Detectives

Image result for reading books cartoon

Today you were put into your new groups and issued with your new reading books. As discussed in class, you will read a set amount of pages per week. Please see below for the pages to be read by each group this week.

Blue:   Billy’s Luck – Please read chapters 1-2: pages 3-23 inclusive.

Red:     Dads Win Prizes – Please read chapters 1-5: pages 3-27 inclusive.

Yellow:   Front Page Story – Please read chapters 1-3: pages 3-27 inclusive

Green:   Tomb Raiders – Please read chapters 1-3: pages 4-33 inclusive.

Once you have completed the reading each week you should then complete two segments using the information from the chapters read: Question Master and Illustrator.  A short section from the book should also be chosen to read aloud to your group members.

We have gone over the types of questions you should be coming up with this week: literal (the answer is found directly in the text). Please come up with 5 questions which can be shared with your group members during our next session. You must also have detailed answers for each of your questions.

You should also completed a detailed illustration of an interesting part of the story so far. A short, written explanation should also be included. This task should be completed in your Book Detectives jotter.

Please remember that you will be unable to participate in our class lesson if you do not complete this task.
