Block 2 Class Information
This year our teacher is Mrs Thompson.
Mrs McGlinchey will cover management time for Mrs Thompson.
Our P.E. days this year are Wednesday and Friday.
Please remember to bring your P.E. kit to school on these days.
Important Dates :
NSPCC Workshops: Workshops will take place during the school day on Wednesday 29th January, with a parent workshop after school.
Scots Verse Assembly: Our annual assembly will take place on Friday 31st January.
February Holiday: The school will be closed from Friday 7th – Wednesday 12th February.
Community Cafe: Our next Community Cafe will take place on Friday 14th February.
Spring Disco: The spring disco will be held on Thursday 26th March
Parent’s Appointments: Our Parent’s Night will take place on Wednesday 1st April
Spring Holidays: The school will close for the spring holidays from Friday 3rd April – Monday 20th April
Reading: This year, your child will be taking part in guided reading. Your child will receive reading homework every week with the pages noted in their homework diary.
Spelling: Your child will receive 12-18 spelling words per week. These will be written in their spelling jotter. Your child should write these words twice using the SACAWAC method. They should also write 3 sentences using 3 of their spelling words and complete the activity noted in their homework diary. If your child uses the Nessy programme, they can choose to complete either sentences or the activity and use the remaining time for Nessy. Spelling words will be tested on a Thursday or a Friday.
Numeracy: Your child will receive one piece of numeracy homework a week. This will be given on a Monday to be completed by Friday. This homework will reinforce learning that has been taking place in class. Numeracy homework will come in a variety of styles. The most common of which are:
- Written homework to be completed on a worksheet/in a homework jotter
- Time on ‘Sumdog’
- Practise of mental maths skills e.g. times tables/beat that learn it facts
Literacy and Modern Languages:
Guided Reading – Primary 6 will take part in Guided Reading. This consists of 3 focused reading sessions per week. Throughout the week your child will have supported reading time with the teacher; personal reading time and will take part in a variety of reading activities. This aims to allow each child to receive increased personal support with their reading.
Novel Study – This block Primary 6 will be completing a whole class novel study of ‘Wolf Wilder’ by Katherine Rundell. We will be discussing the book as a class and completing activities linked to what we have read.
Grammar/Spelling –This year Primary 6 will continue to use Jolly Grammar for reading and spelling. They will explore a number of new spelling patterns and develop their understanding of key grammar concepts.
Writing – This block Primary 6 will cover a range of imaginative, personal and functional writing. They will be learning about the key features of these genres and adapting their writing to suit their audience. They will continue to focus on VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation) in order to extend their writing and will also continue to work on personal writing targets.
Numeracy and Mathematics :
This block Primary 6 will be learning about multiplication & division, shape & angles, algebra and time. We will also continue to extend our mental maths skills through Number Talks and ‘Beat That’.
This year Primary 6 will be continuing to use PATHS. This will allow the children to have an opportunity to explore their emotions and develop strategies for resolving problems they may face. They will also have the opportunity to be given compliments as Pupil of the Week!
In P.E. Primary 6 will be focusing on Scottish Dance and Gymnastics.
This block, Primary 6 will also be learning about having a healthy, balanced diet.
Broad General Education :
This block Primary 6 will be exploring Natural Disasters. We will be learning about how Natural Disasters take place and the impact they have on the environment and people around the world.
This block we will be doing art with Mrs Monaghan and music/drama with Mrs Mackenzie.
This block we will explore festivals in Christianity and other world religions. We will be learning about the beliefs of others and celebrations around the world.
This year Primary 6 are taking part in the JASS (Junior Award Scheme for Schools). This will allow them to develop new skills and achieve a wider achievement award. JASS is full of new and exciting experiences and you will be kept up to date along the way!
Primary 6 have worked together to create their class rules. They have discussed the type of classroom they would like to be in and how this might be achieved. Throughout the year, your child may be awarded ‘dojo winner’ or ‘star of the week’. If they achieve this, they will be allowed to choose a treat from a list of treats created by the class.
How Can You Help at Home? :
Please ensure that all personal belonging are named to avoid items getting lost.
If you haven’t already brought in a shoe bag/P.E. kit, please bring this to school as soon as possible.
