Block 5 Class Information
This year our teacher is Mrs Thompson.
Mrs McGhee will take our class on a Thursday.
Our P.E. days this year are Wednesday and Thursday.
We will be taking part in Outdoor P.E. on a Tuesday.
Important Dates :
Holidays: We will be off for Easter Weekend on Friday 19th & Monday 22nd April. We are also on holiday Monday 6th May & Tuesday 7th May, Friday 24th & Monday 27th May.
Safe Kids: P6 will be attending ‘Safe Kids’ on Wednesday 24th April at Lapwing Lodge.
Maths Games Night: Our Family Maths Games Night will take place on Thursday 2nd May from 7-8pm.
Summer fayre: Our Summer Fayre will take place on Friday 17th May from 5-7pm.
Health Week: Our Health Week will take place week beginning 20th May. This will finish with our Sports Day on Thursday 23rd May.
Summer Disco: The Summer Disco will be held on Thursday 13th June.
End of school year: We close for the Summer Holidays on Friday 28th June.
Reading: This year, your child will be taking part in guided reading. Your child will receive reading homework every week and, depending on their guided reading group, will either be given this on a Monday, Tuesday or Friday. Your child will have that reading task for a week, irrespective of the day the homework is issued e.g. if a reading book is issued on a Friday, it will be changed the following Friday.
Novel Studies: This block we will be continuing our Novel Study. Each week your child will be given pages of their novel to read and tasks to complete in their reading jotter.
Spelling: Your child will receive 10-18 spelling words per week. These will be written in their spelling jotter. Your child should write these words twice and complete the activity noted in their homework diary. These words will be tested during a spelling test on Friday.
Numeracy: Your child will receive one piece of numeracy homework a week. This will be given on a Monday to be completed by Friday. This homework will reinforce learning that has been taking place in class. Numeracy homework will come in a variety of styles. The most common of which are:
- Written homework to be completed on a worksheet/in a homework jotter
- Time on ‘Sumdog’
- Practise of mental maths skills e.g. times tables
Literacy and Modern Languages:
Guided Reading – Primary 6 will take part in Guided Reading. This consists of 3 focused reading sessions per week. Throughout the week your child will have supported reading time with the teacher; personal reading time and will take part in a variety of reading activities. They will complete one of these activities per guided reading session. This aims to allow each child to receive increased personal support with their reading.
Novel Studies – We will continuing with our Novel Studies this block. Each week we will have group discussions where the children share their thoughts and feelings about what they have read and answer each others questions about the text.
Grammar/Spelling –This year Primary 6 will continue to use Jolly Grammar for reading and spelling. They will explore a number of new spelling patterns and develop their understanding of key grammar concepts.
Writing – This block Primary 6 will be focusing on personal and imaginative writing. They will be learning about the key features of these genres and creating their own personal and imaginative pieces. They will continue to focus on VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation) in order to extend their writing and will also continue to work on personal writing targets.
Numeracy and Mathematics :
This block Primary 6 will be learning about expressions & equations, data handling and the impact Maths has on the world.
Mrs McGhee will be teaching Primary 6 about Area and Measure.
This year Primary 6 will be continuing to use PATHS. Mrs McGhee will be taking P6 for PATHS. This will allow the children to have an opportunity to explore their emotions and develop strategies for resolving problems they may face.
In P.E. Primary 6 will be focusing on fitness & gymnastics. We will also be preparing for Sports Day.
This block, Primary 6 will also be learning about healthy living and substance misuse.
Broad General Education :
This block we will be investigating world religions. We will learn about the Jewish festival of Purim and will learn about Islamic Weddings.
Our Science topic this block is ‘The Human Body’. We will be looking into the fascinating systems in our body and how they work. We will also be investigating the ways we can keep our body as healthy as possible.
This block, Primary 6 will be taking part in a range of drama activities. They will gain experience of working in groups and creating small performances.
On a Thursday, Mrs McGhee will be teaching us Technology.
This year Primary 6 are taking part in the JASS (Junior Award Scheme for Schools). We have now completed 2 sections of the award and are working hard to finish the other 2 sections. We hope to have completed the award and gain our Bronze Certificates by June.
How Can You Help at Home? :
Please ensure that all personal belonging are named to avoid items getting lost.
If you haven’t already brought in a shoe bag/P.E. kit, please bring this to school as soon as possible.
