Primary 6

Block 1 Class Information

Teacher(s) :

This year our teacher is Mrs Thompson.

Mrs McGhee will cover management time for Mrs Thompson.

PE days :      

Our P.E. days this year are Wednesday and Friday.

Please remember to bring your P.E. kit to school on these days.

Important Dates :

Meet the teacher: Meet the teacher will take place after school on Thursday 29th August. We look forward to seeing you there!

School photographs: School photographs will be taken on Monday 16th September.

September weekend: We will be on holiday on Friday 27th and Monday 30th September.

Maths Week: Maths Week will take place from Tuesday 1st to Friday 4th October.

P6 at Castle Semple: Primary 6 will be visiting Castle Semple Loch on Friday 4th October for a day of ourdoor activities. A letter is being sent home with further information.

Parent’s Night: Parent’s appointments will take place on Wednesday 9th October.

October Holiday: School will be closed from Friday 11th October. Pupils will return to school on Monday 21st October.

Community Cafes: Our first community cafe will be held on Friday 25th October.

Halloween: The Halloween disco will be held on Wednesday 30th October. We will have a Halloween afternoon in class on Thursday 31st October.

Literacy WeekLiteracy week will take place from Monday 18th – Friday 22nd November.

Christmas Fayre: Our annual Christmas fayre will be held on Friday 29th November.

St Andrew’s Day Holiday:  School will be closed on Monday 2nd December.

Choir at Erskine Home: The choir will perform at the tree of honour ceremony at Erskine home on Thursday 5th December.

Christmas shows and parties: Shows and parties are likely to take place week beginning Monday 9th December/Monday 16th December. More details will be given closer to the time.

Holidays: Christmas holidays will begin on Friday 20th December.


Homework :         

Reading: This year, your child will be taking part in guided reading. Your child will receive reading homework every week with the pages noted in their homework diary.

Spelling: Your child will receive 12-18 spelling words per week. These will be written in their spelling jotter. Your child should write these words twice using the SACAWAC method. They should also write 3 sentences using 3 of their spelling words and complete the activity noted in their homework diary. If your child uses the Nessy programme, they can choose to complete either sentences or the activity and use the remaining time for Nessy. Spelling words will be tested on a Thursday or a Friday.

Numeracy: Your child will receive one piece of numeracy homework a week. This will be given on a Monday to be completed by Friday. This homework will reinforce learning that has been taking place in class. Numeracy homework will come in a variety of styles. The most common of which are:

  • Written homework to be completed on a worksheet/in a homework jotter
  • Time on ‘Sumdog’
  • Practise of mental maths skills e.g. times tables

Literacy and Modern Languages:

Guided Reading – Primary 6 will take part in Guided Reading. This consists of 3 focused reading sessions per week. Throughout the week your child will have supported reading time with the teacher; personal reading time and will take part in a variety of reading activities. This aims to allow each child to receive increased personal support with their reading.

Grammar/SpellingThis year Primary 6 will continue to use Jolly Grammar for reading and spelling. They will explore a number of new spelling patterns and develop their understanding of key grammar concepts.

Writing –  This block Primary 6 will cover a range of imaginative, personal and functional writing. They will be learning about the key features of these genres and adapting their writing to suit their audience. They will continue to focus on VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation) in order to extend their writing and will also continue to work on personal writing targets.

Numeracy and Mathematics :

This block Primary 6 will be learning about place value, number processes and money. They will also be broadening their mental maths skills through a range of activities including number talks.

Mrs McGhee will be teaching Primary 6 about 2D and 3D shape.

Health and Wellbeing :      

This year Primary 6 will be continuing to use PATHS. This will allow the children to have an opportunity to explore their emotions and develop strategies for resolving problems they may face. They will also have the opportunity to be given compliments as Pupil of the Week!

In P.E. Primary 6 will be focusing on fitness.

This block, Primary 6 will also be learning about keeping safe and avoiding risks.

Broad General Education :


This block we will be exploring The Solar System and Chemical Changes. Primary 6 will be given the opportunity to engage in personal research and expand their scientific knowledge.

Expressive Arts

This block we will be doing art with Mrs Mitchell/Mrs Monaghan and music/drama with Mrs Mackenzie.


Mrs McGhee will be teaching us technologies this block. Primary 6 will be taking part in a STEM challenge.


This block we will explore festivals in Christianity and other world religions. We will be learning about the beliefs of others and celebrations around the world.


This year Primary 6 are taking part in the JASS (Junior Award Scheme for Schools). This will allow them to develop new skills and achieve a wider achievement award. JASS is full of new and exciting experiences and you will be kept up to date along the way!

Other Information

Primary 6 have worked together to create their class rules. They have discussed the type of classroom they would like to be in and how this might be achieved. Throughout the year, your child may be awarded ‘dojo winner’ or ‘star of the week’. If they achieve this, they will be allowed to choose a treat from a list of treats created by the class.

How Can You Help at Home? :

Please ensure that all personal belonging are named to avoid items getting lost.

If you haven’t already brought in a shoe bag/P.E. kit, please bring this to school as soon as possible.
