Primary 6

This year our teacher is Mr Elliott.

Our P.E. days are Tuesday and Wednesday.

Please remember to pack both indoor and outdoor shoes for a Thursday in case the weather is favourable and we are able to use the outdoor PE facilities.

Class Dojo

Please join our class dojo to keep up to date with class news, photos and more! You can use dojo to view the points your child has been given and to view our class dojo story.

Microsoft Teams

To help us continue to develop the skills we learned over remote learning, each class from P4-7 has a class Microsoft Team. This team will be used to issue homework each week. Pupils can use the team to access and submit their homework. Teachers will then provide feedback via Microsoft Teams. Pupils can access Microsoft Teams using their glow login and password. If you are unable to access Microsoft Teams at home, a paper copy of the homework will be issued in school.

Homework

Each week, Primary 6 will receive Reading, Literacy and Numeracy homework. All homework will be issued on a Monday to be returned on a Friday. The types of homework task assigned each week will vary between written and active tasks. The homework assigned each week will be noted in your child’s homework diary and posted on our class Microsoft Team.

Reminder

Please ensure that all items that your child brings to school are clearly marked with their name. This is very helpful if items get misplaced!

Here are some of the exciting things we will be learning this term…

Literacy

Reading –

Each week we engage in a number of Guided Reading tasks that help us to develop our reading skills. We are continuing to carefully study the language used by the author in order to understand something of the techniques writers use to create suspense, interest, a hook or detail. Through this lots of discussion and questions arise, which help us to develop our understanding.

Writing –

In writing, we are continuing to develop Talk 4 Writing skills already mastered this year. Our next Model text will be ‘Coral Ocean.’ Through this text we will be exploring the concept of a Change Story and engaging in Non-Fiction Writing through Diary recounts. We will also be exploring our current novel ‘The Children of Castlerock.’

During these sessions we learn about the various different aspects of a good text (grammar, punctuation, spelling) and what skills the author uses to create excitement and high quality description.  Once we have learned these skills, we then have the opportunity to create our own story linked to our model text, to showcase our ability to use all the tools of a great piece of writing.

Spelling & Grammar –

In spelling we will continue to learn a new spelling pattern weekly, completing a range of written and active tasks to consolidate our understanding of the pattern in focus.

Listening & Talking –

These skills are embedded in aspects across the curriculum. We have opportunities to give individual, pair and group feedback to showcase our learning, deliver discussions and debate a variety of issues. This term we will have opportunity to engage in debate and present Personal Projects towards the end of term.

Numeracy

In Numeracy this term we will be covering:  Money, Time, Data Analysis, Co-Ordinates.

Numeracy activities cover a range of different approaches, so that we can best understand the topic in focus. We have a number of of favourites but our current number one is Imposter Challenges! These provide a great opportunity to explore our Number Sense, attempting a wide range of mental and written methods to solve calculations. This is a great task to develop firm understanding of any of the core skills – Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division. It also generates good Maths Talk, where we have to think carefully which answer is the imposter!

Health & Wellbeing

In Health and Wellbeing we continue to use the PAThS programme to learn about feelings and how to manage emotions in a variety of different social situations. These tasks reflect the age and stage we are in now, so provide us with opportunities to really challenge our thinking. In PE we are focussing on Striking and Fielding Games and Sports Day Activities. We will also be covering lessons in relation to RSHP, learning relationships and our bodies.

Broad General Education

This term we will be completing Personal Projects. Each year, pupils choose a topic to research individually and then present their learning. Later in the term, we will be covering our next Science and Technologies topic of Computing and Lego WeDo, where we will be exploring various computing, coding and tech based skills. In Art and Design we are developing our skills of colour and form. We are continuing with our French lessons and will be building our confidence to engage in short conversations.
