Here are some of the exciting things we will be learning this term.

Literacy

Reading

Children will continue to read books in our book banded range, They may have one or two books each week. Books may be fiction or non fiction. Children will be continually assessed throughout the year to ensure they are reading at the correct level.

Writing

We will continue to use the Talk for Writing approach this year. This term we will start with a piece of personal writing about Christmas or a birthday. Then we will be focusing on description in writing with a defeat the monster story, followed by a non fiction discussion piece. We will continue to use model texts for pupils to learn the structure and grammar content through recital, drama and story maps before innovating the model texts to write their own pieces.

Phonics, Spelling, & Grammar – We will continue to learn new spelling patterns and sounds through the Jolly Spelling programme.  Children will also complete spelling tasks in class.  Grammar concepts  will be taught through our writing,  Jolly Grammar resource where appropriate with additional  active resources to support this learning.

Listening & Talking –We are given regular opportunities across the curriculum and in play opportunities to engage in class and group discussions, practising our ability to make contributions, listen to others and build on their ideas. Children will also respond to reading activities by taking notes and using these to create fact files etc.

Numeracy

This term we will be focusing on multiplication and division. As with addition and subtraction, it is important for children to understand repeated addition/subtraction, grouping/sharing, the commutative law and arrays when learning the above.  We will also complete some data handling tasks.

A concrete, pictorial, abstract methodology is used for Numeracy to support understanding.  SEAL maths is taught alongside relevant concepts to reinforce them.

Health & Wellbeing

PATHS will continue with the P3 programme focusing on feelings, problem solving and friendship.  We will continue with Child of the Week and come home with a list of compliments from other members of the class.

In PE we will cover Scottish Dance and gymnastics.

Food health will be covered by Mrs McGhee

Broad General Education

Scottish Themed learning will start our year. The children have expressed an interest in learning about Nessy, the Scottish Thistle, some Scot’s language and Scottish Castles.  We will also listen to some Scot’s poems and stories.
