Today was the Engineering focus of STEM. Engineering is all about designing, solving problems, creating, using materials and building. There were two design briefs, to make a bridge that would hold objects and design a boat that would float.
We explored how we could make the materials stronger, and the shapes that would be strongest.
Today we were learning about technological achievements during the Viking and Victorian ages in comparison with technology today. We learnt that technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes and the use of knowledge to invent new devices or tools.
We used advances in digital technology to discover about technology in the past. Using textbooks uses the technology of 1440, the invention of the printing press. Developments in technology are used all the time in our everyday lives!
Again, please see the P4 blog for some additional photos.
It is STEM week, so during the afternoons we are working with another class to focus on STEM learning. Today our focus was Science and there are so many branches to learn about. In P4 it was chemical reactions (see P4’s blog for photos) and in P4/5 we were learning that liquids have different densities and that some liquids are heavier than others. We demonstrated this by creating a Rainbow in a jar which shows the different layers clearly.
For anyone anting to try this at home, use food colouring for the water and surgical spirit layers.
