Children in Need Day!

Happy Children in Need Day everyone!

Today in in assembly we learned all about what we need as children and how as part of a rights respecting school we promote the rights of the child to get these needs. We learned about Children in Need helping withthis and why we should feel good about ourselves for helping raise money and awareness of rights today.

We then spent the rest of the day doing different activities linked to rights and had lots of fun! We looked at who Children in Need help, we did a Pudsey treasure hunt, worked as part of a team and created out very own Pudsey heroes!

Have a look at the school blog main page for photographs of the activities.

Have a great weekend and we will see you on Tuesday! (Remember Monday is an Inservice day for staff)

Wednesday 11.11.15

Today with Mr McCrorie we went on an Autumn Science walk. We learned all about the Scienece behind the changing seasons and what is happening to the plants and trees in our playground and why. Ask us about it tonight, you will be amazed with what we have learned!

This afternoon we worked on a persuasive poster for our Children in Need activity day this Friday. We had to include persuasive words and phrases, a UNCRC article and an example of someone Children in Need has helped with the money we have raised. We are all very excited about Friday and can’t wait to wear our spots! Remember to bring your £1!

6.11.15

Such a busy day today… Did you know we helped Primary 5 to plant a forest?! We had great fun digging holes, planting trees and working as a team to get the job done! There are still lots more trees to be planted, perhaps next week we’ll get to do it again!

We really hope you don’t mind us coming home a little dirty – we truely were very busy learning!!!

5.11.15

We started our day with some writing – first we completed some hand writing using pen & then we moved onto writing stories about Bonfire Night. We peer assessed our work as our target was to include some adjectives & a simile.

After break we began visualising decimals. We used the Base 10 materials to help us & it made it easier to visualise the whole numbers, the tenths & the hundredths.

This afternoon we created some bonfire night artwork. We used coloured pastels & paint to create silhouette paintings. The P6’s took part in a safety talk from the fire fighters & the P5’s played an endless game of dodgeball with Mr MCCrorie!

4.11.15

We started today with an introduction to decimals. First we brainstormed what we already knew & then we learned about the place value system & where the decimal point sits. To practise we played an exciting game of Beat the Teacher. Mrs Thomson needs to brush-up on her skills as she didn’t manage to beat the whole class!!

This afternoon we were in the ICT suite to research & make powerpoints about Guy Fawkes. We found out lots of information about him & why we have bonfire night. We were even able to teach each other some new ICT skills – many of us included animation in our powerpoints.

Homework 2.11.15 – 16.11.15

In Maths over the next few weeks we will be beginning work on our Money topic. Some of the things we will be looking at are:

  • coins and notes  up to £100
  • different currencies
  • paying for goods in a given situation
  • budgeting
  • comparing special deals and offers to work out the best deal

Some ideas for tasks at home include:

  • Set yourself a budget e.g. £100 and use catalogues or web sites with parental permission to ‘buy’ presents for Christmas for a family of four.
  • Set yourself a budget e.g. £20 and use catalogues or web sites with parental permission to plan a 3 course meal for a family of four.
  • Go with an adult from your family to the shops for example to buy the weeks shopping. Pay close attention at the tills and see what happens when someone pays for goods. Did they use cash or card? Did they get change?
  • When on this trip to the shops or again using catalogues or web sites with parental permission choose 5 deals to investigate. Did they save you money, if so how much and was it the ‘best deal’?
  • Go to Money Master to work with coins and different currencies.

In Language we will be working on our novels and reading books. To support this work at home you can:

Go to the library and/or read a book you already have in your house. Using this book:

  • Make up questions for someone in your family to answer.
  • Create a character profile for one of the characters within the story.
  • Record within your ‘Thinking Jotter’ any words you did not know the meaning too along with their definitions which you have discovered either by using a written or online dictionary.
  • Create an alternative ending to your chosen story.

We will also be looking at news stories. To support this work you could:

  • use written and oral reports of news stories and compare their styles.
  • look for stories centered around children’s rights and identify the article from the UNCRC which is being discussed.
  • use Newsround website to support your work.

Health and Wellbeing

Fireworks/Bonfire Safety will be investigated. To support this you could:

  • Create a Fireworks/Bonfire Safety guide for children of your age. Consider how you would get their attention and get them to listen to the key points about Firework/Bonfire Safety that you are trying to tell them.
  • Share this guide with family and friends before Fireworks/Bonfire night.
  • Create a fireworks picture using any media you have available (e.g. chalk, pencils, pens, paint etc.)

Inter-Disciplinary Learning

We will be focussing on Children in Need over the next fortnight and specifically the link to the work they do and Children’s Rights. To support this work:

Don’t forget to record anything you do in your ‘Thinking Jotter’if you wish and bring it in to let us all see!

Halloween Fun

This afternoon we had a bit of Halloween fun! We made some Halloween crafts, played a pumpkin game & outside we played a very messy Halloween game involving flour & sweets!!

Have a great Halloween everyone!

29.10.15

What an action packed day! This morning we began work with P6/7 looking at peer assessment.

After break we had literacy time. We investigated adjectives & verbs before moving on to try out a new literacy resource.

We had art this afternoon where we created pictures using crisp packets. We had to concentrate on & consider size, shade & features. We are pretty proud of our pictures so far!

We finished the day with PE where we enjoyed playing team games. We taught Mrs Watson & Mrs Thomson some new games!

Wednesday 28.10.15

Sorry for the lack of blogs, unfortunately Mrs Pollock is off at the moment.

Today we had Mr McCrorie as our teacher. We had an assembly this morning and after break we worked on improving the detail in our character descriptions.

image image image image image

We had to draw a character from our imagination, write a description for it on a different page, give our written description to a partner who had to draw our characters from the written descriptions only. We then got to see how similar the two drawings of the character were. It was really interesting because the information we forgot to put into our descriptions meant they looked a bit different. When we write descriptions of characters in the future we will now try to add as much detail about how the character looks and moves as possible.

This afternoon we worked together on ideas for the school’s first Rights Respecting Schools Comic.

Get better soon Mrs Pollock!
