Homework W/B 19th September 2016

Last week in numeracy we were looking at multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, and 1,000.  Have a go at this:

The answer is 2400 – Ask your child to write as many multiplication questions as he/she can involving multiples of 10 and 100 with the answer 2400, e.g. 3 × 800, 40 × 60, 12 × 200, 80 × 30, 120 × 20, 400 × 6, etc. Encourage your child to include more than two numbers in the multiplication questions, e.g. 3 × 40 × 20 or 2 × 20 × 60 or 2 × 2 × 2 × 300, etc. Other target numbers could be given,
e.g. 360, 4800 or 6400, etc.

Practise your times tables.  Everyone knows what times tables they have to cover.  Here are some websites to help you practise or you can make the TGTs we made in class.  Please record in your homework jotter how you prefer to practise your tables, the websites you visit or if you find a really useful website also write it down in your jotter for others to try.

Literacy.  Write these lists into your jotters neatly.  Remember to use commas to separate items on the list but the last two items on the list are separated with the word and.

  • The room was dirty and smelly and very dark.

 

  • The flowers were red and pink and yellow and white.

House Homework:

Design a coat of arms for your house and the winner of these will then be made and put on the house wall in the dinner hall. Include an animal, something to help you learn, a food, an inspirational person and a motto for the house. You can plan your coat of arms in your jotter but your final version should be completed on the sheet given to you on Monday in school.

 

As the whole school has been given House Homework, we are going to postpone our making of a musical instrument until after the September Weekend.  There is nothing to stop you getting started on your instrument.  Can your instrument’s pitch change, can you play it loudly or quietly?

It was lovely to meet some of our parents last night at the Parent Information Evening.  We have been really busy today, as always! This morning our class attended a SSPCA workshop called Pet Patrol delivered by Officer Alex Robertson.  Next week we will write a report on the work of the SSPCA.

Science Investigation

This afternoon we continued our work on Sound. We completed five investigations into sounds. Come along to our  open evening at 7pm on Thursday night to find out more.  This is a drop in session when you can find out about the work P5/6.

P5/6 Homework W/B 12th September

Numeracy

Last week in maths we looked at negative numbers.  We :

  • Located numbers with a value of less than zero on a number line
  • Sequenced positive and negative numbers
  • Solved simple problems in context, with reference to the number line e.g. it was -10°C and it got 3°C colder/warmer

Temperature chain puzzles Ask your child to make a puzzle by writing a chain of temperature changes, e.g. It was 7°C and then it reached 10°C. The temperature then rose by 5° before dropping a further 8°. What is the temperature now? He/she gives the initial temperature and makes sure he/she knows the final temperature in each puzzle. Use the puzzles in another lesson as a class quiz.

Literacy

This week we will have a spelling test on Friday.  We won’t have a spelling test every week but I will let you know when we are having a test through our blog.  Everyone has copied their spellings into their homework jotter.  Those children who have left their jotter at home copied their list onto a piece of paper.  Homework this week involves preparation for your test.  You could prepare by:  listing your spelling words in order from hardest to easiest, write your words in rainbow colours or dots or write a silly sentence with your spelling word in it– don’t forget capital letters and full stops for your sentences.

Read to someone at home.  Don’t forget to discuss what you have read and you must bring your book to school every day as we will be using it in class.

As part of our work on the Five Pillars of Islam, we recalled facts we knew about the religion Islam. Research at least 5 facts about Islam and write them neatly into your jotter or illustrate them.

Anybody who didn’t bring in their homework jotter today please bring it in asap 🙂

 

 

 

Outdoor Education- Come Prepared!!!

I’ve just come back from doing a risk assessment at the Luggie. After today’s rain it is too fast flowing so we won’t be able to go there tomorrow. Instead we will continue our Outdoor Education in the school grounds so bring your wellies and waterproof jackets.  We may even get to  play “Capture  the Flag” with our wellies on…

Please remember to bring in your homework jotters and painting shirt, if you haven’t already done so.

 

P5/6 Homework Week Beginning 5th September

This week for spelling, we have been looking at the homophones:

Remember homophones sound the same but look different because they are spelt different.

Maths

Pick one of these activities and visit 1 website.  You can choose from:

Football Transfers newspapers, computer with internet access.  Ask children to find out information about football players’ transfer fees in the paper or on the internet. They list up to ten prices in their learning logs. They underline one digit of each transfer fee and identify the value of the underlined digit using words or figures, e.g. £764 000 is seven hundred thousand pounds or £700 000.

Globe Trotters atlases, computer with internet access.  Investigate the distances between home and five cities they would really like to visit.  Put the distances in order, starting with the highest.  Think about which destinations would cost most to visit and why?

Digit shuffle Ask children to write the last three digits of a phone number (their own or a friend’s). The three digits must be different. They write all the different 2-digit numbers that they can make with the digits. For each number, they partition the digits and give their values, e.g. 24 = 2 tens and 4 units = 20 + 4.

The digit 3 Ask children to investigate how many numbers between 0 and 100 have the digit 3. They list all the numbers and say whether the digit 3 is a tens digit or a units digit (include the number 33 that has both). How many numbers do you think would have a different digit such as 7?

Science:

As we begin our new learning focusing on sound, have a look at this website.  It is from another school called Woodlands but it is down in Kent in England.  Answer the questions on the web page and then there are links to choose from that will help you learn more about sound.

In a fortnight’s time, you will be asked to make a musical instrument from junk material.   I’m mentioning it now so that  you keep your eyes opened for suitable junk material.

 

 

P5/6 Homework

Literacy:  We have been looking at nouns, verbs and adjectives

Nouns and adjectives game: A Game for 2 players.  Face each other,  one person starts by saying a noun. The other responds with an adjective that fits that noun, e.g. “Chair,” followed by, “Comfy.” Then the first person says another noun and the second person responds, again, with an adjective that goes with it. The game continues until either person loses. The person that wins stays up and faces a new challenger. The winning person must now take on the opposite role. So if they said nouns before they are now adjectives and vice versa.

A person loses if:

  • they take too long to answer a question;
  • they say, “erm,” before answering;
  • they repeat a word that has already been said in the round by either child;
  • they say an incorrect word (one that either isn’t a noun or adjective or an adjective that doesn’t fit.

Welcome to P5/6

We have had a great start to the term and everyone is so keen to open their minds to new learning.

Anybody who hasn’t organised their PE kit , can you please do so as we have PE on a Monday and Wednesday.  Some people are choosing to leave their PE kits in the classroom and others want to take theirs home.  It’s entirely up to you as long as you have a PE Kit every Monday and every Wednesday.

It would be useful if you could bring, and leave in the classroom, an old shirt/apron to cover your uniform when we are doing art.
