Super Soaring Sensational Primary 4s!!!

Welcome to our blog.  Over the last couple of weeks we have been learning lots of new things.  Enjoy reading below to find out about our learning in Primary 4.  We are so lucky to have another teacher in our class to help us.  Her name is Miss Conroy.

Literacy

Infrencing – we are becoming more confident in using this strategy to help us work out what the author means.

Aliteration – With Miss Conroy we learned all about alliteration.  This is when phrases start with the same letter and sound.  For example…Lazy Luca/ Sunny Sam.  We were able to make up sentences for our alliteration with our partners this was fun!

Writing – we are continuing to learn about Report writing.  We are learning how to write reports and we now know that reports have to have..

  • A good title, lots of information/facts, Opening paragraph, a good ‘round off’ and finally sub headings.

Maths & Numeracy

This week in maths we have been learning how to use our strategies to help us count 2 digit numbers (32+ 23= 55) (30+20 and then 2+3)

We have also been learning all about directions and the 4 point compass. The magnetic needle always pulls back to North. Learning about the compass is important for us as one day we may need to use these skills.  We know that people such as builders and people who work in transport all use the compass.

We have learned a little mnemonic to help us with the compass points (NESW – Never eat shreaded wheat)

With our directions also learned how to write directions quickly (forward 3= F3) (backwards 3 =B3

Health & Well Being

We have learned about food hygiene.  We know that cross contamination is when two different foods are aquainted with each other (Abi-Rose). As well as this, we know that it is important to store food correctly for example, meat should be near the bottom of the fridge so that the juice doesn’t contaminate other foods.

Water – We learned about the importance of H20.  It is important to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day!  Miss Conroy taught us a little song – ‘The Water Song!’

Topic – Space

We have now finished our Space topic this week.  We learned about Neil Armstrong and then we wrote a fabulous report about him.  Some facts we learned:

  • He was first person to walk on the moon (Lara)
  • He is American (Charlie)
  • His first spacecraft was called Gemini 8 (Freya)

At home ask us some more about Neil and we will blow you away with our amazing facts!

In our Space topic we enjoyed….

  • Kaisey – I like learning all about Neil Armstrong
  • LaceyAnne – I liked learning about the sun
  • Noah – The phases of the moon was good especially when we had the oreo challenge!

Topic – Inventors

One of our new topics is Scottish Inventors. We learned all about Alexander Graham Bell.  He invented the telephone. His most famous student was Helen Keller.  Next week we will be planning and designing our very own inventions!

Learning through Play

This week we had the privilege of going to the playroom.  In primary 4 we are learning through play.  We know that we are not ‘just playing’ but that we are learning skills through the tasks and activities Mrs Doherty sets us.  Some of the learning this week through play was:

  • Using Beebots:  we learned the skills of coding, challenging and thinking and planning
  • Imaginative Play:  We practised our counting and money skills.  We also learned how to work with others.
  • Loose Parts: We used lots of loose parts to create something linked to our space top0ic.  The skills we learned were: imagining, thinking, planning and creating.

Star Writers:

Our amazing star writers wrote some fabulous reports on Neil Armstrong.  Well done to Lara, Danny, Abi and Terri.

Star Pupils:

Well done to our Star pupil…  Melissa for working hard in all areas of learning, being kind and caring to others.  Fantastic!!

Thank you for reading our blog! We hope that you enjoyed finding out all about the fun in primary 4!  It has been a very cold and frosty week.  Please keep us wrapped up warm for school.  Have a great weekend!
