2 weeks completed in Primary 1 and we have packed in so much learning already!
In Literacy we have been exploring the letter ‘a’ through a variety of active learning activities and play experiences. We drew pictures of us waving our hands and told Mrs McCann the story that matched our picture. We realised that there are lots of reasons why we might wave our hands (the playground wasps were mentioned a lot) and we had to remember to draw 5 fingers on each hand! We are continuing to work on rhyming, syllables and alliterative words to develop our readiness to read. We have been exploring the nursery rhyme ‘Jack and Jill’.
Our book of the week was ‘What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday’ by Julia Donaldson. We have explored the story through our play experiences. In construction some children were building the Queen’s castle or building a stronger cage for monkey Joe so that Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len couldn’t get him. At our craft table some children wanted to design a crown for the queen and in story making some children chose to retell the story or make up their own version of it. In role play children were acting out the story. We had some wonderful pictures in our drawing area. We have also been looking at the rhyming words throughout the book. Next week’s book is ‘The Cat in the Hat’.
In Maths we have been working on our counting skills through various active learning activities and play experiences. We have also been playing numberline games and looking at number order. We are learning new words such as ‘quantity’ and ‘amount ‘. We have been playing with 3D shapes and looking at their properties, in particular which ones can roll/stack. Building and playing with these shapes is the best way for us to learn this.
Thanks for reading our blog. There is never a dull moment in Primary 1 so pop back next week to see what we have been up to. Once all permission slips have been returned we can post some photographs.
