A busy but tasty week in Primary 4!

Welcome to our weekly blog!

Maths & Numeracy – This week we have continued to use strategies in our maths to help us add and subtract totals quickly.  We also investigated the number square and found out that when we go along we count up and down in ones.  When we go up and down the columns we add and subtract in tens. We have learned to use the number line to quickly add too.  Ask us to show you!

Literacy – We are continuing to read our class novels.  The Best Dog in The world and Horrid Henry.  We used infrencing to work out what the author means (Reading between the lines).  Also, we have created visualisers to help us create pictures in our minds.  One of the new words we learned this week in metalinguistics is ‘eagerly’ – this means that you are keen to do it. Miss Conroy set us a challenge with our spelling words – we had to create headlines using our words.

Health & Well Being – This week we have learned even more about the Eatwell plate. We now know the names of the five food groups. (Carbohydrates, Fruit & Veg, Dairy, Fats & Oils, Protein) We now know that it is important to eat more of the bigger parts and less of the smaller parts. It’s all about a ‘balanced diet’.

Topic (SPACE) – We had so much fun this week learning about the phases of the moon.  Mrs Doherty brought in some Oreo biscuits for us to create the lunar phases of the moon.   This was quite challenging to do; the biscuits were quite fragile and we had to be careful not to break them.  We also had to remember what the different phases were.   We worked in our groups to help each other.  Have a look at our pictures!

  • Chrysa – the moon is much smaller than the earth.
  • Abi – If a giraffe was standing on the moon and a tiger was on earth. The giraffe would be the same weight as the tiger because of the gravity.
  • James – The sun lights up the moon.
  • Danny – The moon is 238 900 miles away from earth.

P.E – We are learning lots of skills in gym.  We have been focusing on possession games like badminton, hockey and basketball. We are learning to develop these skills both indoors and outdoors.   Some of the skills we used were hand and eye co-ordination, thinking, working together and control.

This week we have enjoyed:

  • Kasiey –  I have enjoyed learning about the moon.  Its interesting.
  • Gemma – I loved the Scottish songs in assembly. (Coulter’s Candy)
  • Noah – I liked learning the Italian alphabet.
  • Emma – Maths was my favourite I liked learning and using the strategies.

Well done to our STAR PUPIL – Kasiey.  For trying hard in reading, spelling and even more so in her number work when learning to use strategies to add and subtract.
