Clyde In The Classroom
On 15th February we gained 200 new class mates! 200 brown trout eggs. Here’s the story of how that happened.
In October, Miss Flint told us we could learn about rivers, life cycles and being responsible for our environment in a new, exciting way. We could raise brown trout in our class! We were super excited, but then she told us it would cost £400!
We decided to work hard and earn the money to pay for the hatchery.
We also did lots of chores at home, sang at the Regent Centre and made lots of Christmas Baubles to sell at the Christmas Show. It was a huge success and we managed to raise £444.53
On the 15th of January we went to Glasgow Science Centre to take part in the Clyde in The Classroom Launch. It was great fun, we learned lots about the life cycle of fish, how to look after them and all about the river.
We were so exited after our visit we couldn’t wait for our scientist Willie to come and deliver our trout eggs. Unfortunately, the warm autumn and cold snap in January meant we had to wait 4 weeks before the fish arrived.
In the meantime, we did lots of learning!
- Made timetables to show whose turn it is to look after the hatchery.
- Created posters showing the hatchery rules.
- Wrote newspaper reports of our trip.
- Plotted the temperature of the hatchery water on graphs every day.
- Created paper plate models of the brown trout life cycle
- Modelled and painted a display showing all the different parts of a river.
- Explored the water cycle and wrote explanations about how water travels.
All before the eggs even arrived!
The eggs finally arrived on 15th February. Here are some of our favourite moments!
We’ll keep you updated with their progress as the weeks go on. We hope you’re as excited as we are!
