If you remember last week I discussed old film Vs TV broadcast quality . Well here is a BBC project to re-digitise Laurel and Hardy films. The left hand side of the screen shows the original broadcast quality and the right hand side is the newly digitised HD movie.

Multimedia – Video Framerate
Today we looked at video and the need for compression. However, remember the important thing for videos is bitrate! Take for example the game Witcher 3. On the PC it can be displayed at 4K, on the PS4 1080p and the xBox One at 900p. The reason for this is the specification of machines and their GPUs. The PC can be upgraded which means that you can spend more money buying better components which can process faster. The consoles are limited by the spec they were designed with, this in turn means that machines with limited processing power can simply not push the number of bits required to display in 4K. However, the PS4 and xbox One claim to be 4K consoles, I guess time will tell.

Midi
For the higher course you need to be able to explain these terms
- Instrument
- This is the instrument that is to be played, you will have seen these if you have ever used an electronic musical keyboard.
- Pitch
- This is the note that has to be played.
- Volume
- How loud the note has to be played.
- Duration
- How long the note has to be played for. In MIDI a start of note and end of note is used. Duration can also be how long it takes the sound to die away.
- Tempo
- How quickly the piece of music is to be played. This is expressed in BPM (Beats per minute)
- Smaller file size
- All aspects of the music can be edited
- Effects can be applied to individual instruments
- There is no interference or background noise from the recording
Disadvantages of MIDI:
- Dependent on soundcard for quality of sound
- Does not contain vocals
- Fewer effects can be applied to the sound
Advantages of MIDI:
