Braidhurst High School VEX Robotics Club is meeting the Scottish Governments desire to expose developing young minds to the understanding of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics). It is hoped that this exposure to STEM concepts will nurture creative advancement in robotics and electronics, to learn skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more. Pictured with the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, are two of the clubs members. The First Minister was attending the, All Different But United Event, held at Holyrood Sports Centre on Saturday the 11th of March. The community event is organized by the Raza Sadiq, the Chairperson and founder of the Active Life Club. It was a short but detailed master class in robotics delivered by the girls to the First Minister. The Club are getting ready to compete in the UK National Championships on the 17th of March, being staged at the NEC in Birmingham as part of the Big Bang Fair. The finals are an opportunity for the Scottish Design and Judges award winners to compete against other clubs who have also qualified.

Art and Design Drugs Mural transition project
The S1 pupils of Braidhurst High School and primary seven pupils of Muir Street primary have been working hard to complete a collaborative drugs mural project.
Having successfully completed this bright and eye-catching mural, this piece will now be entered into the Choices for Life transition competition 2017, held by Police Scotland as part of their Substance misuse initiative.
In raising awareness of substance misuse the pupils of Braidhurst High school and Muir Street primary, hope to show the risks of taking substances. Building on their knowledge and skills gained on the visual elements of Line, Shape, Form and Colour to coincide with research into substance use the pupils have created a dynamic visual. This has been displayed through colourful sweetie like imagery interspersed with the grotesque drawings of bottles, needles and pipes etc along with a word search of the associated effects of substance use.
JUDO STAR
Emerging Judo star, S6 pupil Nicole Weir, recently attended the Kendal Open Championship on Sunday 12th February. At the tournament Nicole earned a silver medal in the 60 kilos category, which in itself is a fantastic achievement, which was especially impressive as it was her first competition. Nicole is a great credit to Braidhurst High School and Hamilton Judo Club not only for her sporting achievement but also for her positive ‘can-do’ attitude towards training and competing.
CONTEMPORARY PERFORMANCE PRACTICE DEGREE PROGRAMME
Former pupil Holly Worton has been offered a place on the prestigious Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s ‘Contemporary Performance Practice’ degree programme. Last year, in order to strengthen her skills and improve her audition chances Holly won a place at the Junior Conservatoire and has also been participating in weekly Lifelong Learning classes. Holly’s dedication, hard work and perseverance paid off as she delivered an outstanding audition which won her a place on the conservatoire’s undergraduate degree course which she will start in September 2017.
FOOTBALL UPDATE
Well done to pupils Adam Kettings (S3) and Jamie Semple (S4) on their selection for the U16 squad for the upcoming UEFA Development Tournament. A huge well done to both boys.
HIGHER PHOTOGRAPHY VISIT
A group of Braidhurst High Higher Photography students visited New College Lanarkshire to view the exhibition of HNC and HND Photography. After the exhibition, there were demonstrations on a range of photographic studio techniques. This was followed up with a studio workshop which pupils participated in.
S1 GIRLS FOOTBALL
Well done to the S1 Girl’s football team who have won four out of five games in North Lanarkshire’s 7’s league which means they are now placed second in the overall league table.
