Some S1 pupils have had their short stories included in an anthology, entitled ” Spine Chillers”. The pupils worked on these in class last Hallow’een then had the difficult task of reducing them to 100 words, which was the criteria for entries.
The pupils are Ben Queen, Alex Lowry, Olivia Biggart, Richard Hallford ( not present in the picture), Leah Fairservice, Kyle Easton, Cameron Stewart and Eve Nicholson.
Braidhurst Under 14s braved stormy weather conditions on Thursday to play their Semi-Final of the Lanarkshire Cup away to Chryston High School. The first half was a scrappy affair with both teams struggling to cope with the conditions, but the visitors eventually went in front thanks to a left-footed strike from Alistair Small. Stuart McKinstry then doubled their lead soon after, firing past the keeper at the second time of asking, which gave Braidhurst a 2-0 lead going into half-time. The second half was much the same as the first, but after a Nathan Spence pass put Robbie Shanks through on goal, a neat finish past the keeper put the game beyond doubt. The game ended 3-0 to Braidhurst, with Mr Clarke and Mr O’Toole delighted at the outcome as well as the effort that the boys put in. They are now into the Cup Final where they will meet the winners of St. Maurice’s HS and Taylor HS.
Staff at Braidhurst High School gathered on Friday 22nd to wish Mrs Anna Chisholm a happy and well-deserved retirement. Anna served the school in various capacities for an incredible 37 years. She was a stalwart of the Parent Teacher Association and at the forefront of the Save Our School campaign some years ago. For the last 22 years she was a well-loved Additional Support Needs Assistant, and her expertise and caring nature will be sorely missed.
Braidhurst High School has successfully worked in partnership with the Prince’s Trust in the delivery of the S3/4 XL programme over the past 5 years. S4/5 pupils are currently participating in Future Starts, a pilot initiative developed by Prince’s Trust in response to the Commission on Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce. It is aimed at young people aged 15-18 to offer an insight into the world of work. Over the past 5 weeks pupils have attended Industry Taster events to find out more about careers in construction, mechanics, sports and childcare. The boys gained hands-on experience in the college’s extensive training facilities and gained invaluable careers advice on construction apprenticeships from Kier Construction and Amey. The Future Starts group will now be offered the opportunity for a work experience week in May and June to explore their chosen career further.
Scottish Cup Quarter-Final: Lochgelly HS vs Braidhurst HS
Braidhurst Under 14s travelled to Fife on Tuesday afternoon to play their Scottish Cup Quarter-Final match against Lochgelly HS. It was a massive game for both schools and the players were led on to the park by a piper. Once the game had begun the visitors controlled the opening period, making their possession count when Reece McAlear scored with a composed finish after great work from Adam Kettings. Moments before half-time, a quick-fire double from Alistair Small and Max McGuigan put Braidhurst in a commanding 3-0 lead. After the restart, a fine save from substitute goalkeeper Lewis McCallum prevented the hosts from coming back into the game. A long range strike from Adam put the game well beyond doubt and Braidhurst were to progress to the Semi-Finals as 4-0 winners. Mr Clarke and Mr O’Toole were delighted with the team’s achievement and they now face St. Andrews Secondary.
Meal Price Increase
As you may be aware the council accepted the savings proposal to increase the price of a school meal and to increase the price of an adult meal within a school.
From Monday 18th April 2016
Another saving which was accepted was the removal of free fruit three times a week for Primary 1 and Primary 2.
The Modern Languages Department said a sad farewell to German Exchange Teacher Tim Senz last week. Tim has been an assistant in the school since September of last year and is now travelling back to his home town of Mainz in Germany to complete his studies. During his time in Braidhurst, he worked with National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher German classes, as well as being instrumental in helping develop resources for the Modern Languages For Life and Work class. Activities he carried out with this class included making German biscuits called Platzchen, broadening their knowledge of German culture through Power Point presentations, helping them prepare Job Applications and CVs in German, as well as engaging in a number of ICT activities. Tim also visited the PE Department and was an active participant in games of volleyball and in trampoline sessions. Tim spent his free time exploring Scotland and was so impressed by the beautiful scenery and the hospitality of the people that he intends to return in the near future. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed making his acquaintance.
