Robotics Master Class

Pupils of the Braidhurst High school robotics club had a visit from two lecturers from New Collage Lanarkshire, namely, Michael McGuire and Lisa Richardson, who were invited to deliver a master class on Vex robotics virtual programming.

The study of robotics inherently encompasses all facets of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). When students learn through exploration it increases motivation and desire to succeed. The club has been running for three years and now has pupils from S1 to S6. The pupils have been working hard to get their robots ready for the regional competition that will be held in the college campus next year. They will compete against other schools in North Lanarkshire.

Mr Hussain, the teacher who runs the club commented “ I am very grateful that the collage has supported us to help develop new skills for the coming competition. I am also very proud to have Lisa Richardson mentor my all girl robotics team.

BOOKS ABROAD

The school library recently donated 29 boxes of non-fiction books to the Scottish charity Books Abroad, who will recycle the books and send them to schools and other institutions in developing countries.   The charity’s mission statement believes that through the promotion of literacy and education, children and young people, are provided with the means of a sustainable escape route from the plight of poverty.   Mrs Scott, the school librarian, would like to give a special thanks to her library volunteers, Charles Carroll and Sarah Cooper (both S6) for helping with the mammoth task of packing up and labelling each box of books.

North Lanarkshire Creative Residency

Emma Ewart and Rebekah Tong took part in the North Lanarkshire Creative Residency for Art & Design in Oban just before the summer break.
They were studying Filmmaking and Printmaking at the Residency and are both looking forward to attending their specialist masterclasses in October.
The Residency Exhibition will take place in Summerlee in January.

Emma was studying Filmmaking and Rebekah, who studied Printmaking are eager to take up their places at this year’s Residency masterclasses

GAP MEDICS

The school presented former pupil Leigh Gorman with a cheque for £105 as a contribution towards her volunteering trip with Gap Medics to Africa.  Leigh plans to spend four weeks, next January/February 2017, as a volunteer at a hospital and orphanage where she will gain invaluable hospital work experience.  The trip will hopefully help her to pursue her dream of studying nursing at Edinburgh’s Napier University, “I am passionate about getting into the course at Napier and about volunteering.  Right now, I’m feeling a mix of nerves and excitement.” Leigh is still in need of donations to fund her trip and her next event is a race night in Parkhead next month.

ALTON TOWERS

135 pupils and 9 staff had a fantastic day out at Alton Towers theme park last Friday. The pupils were invited to attend the trip as a reward for excellent behaviour, attendance and timekeeping from last session. The trip was a fantastic success and the pupils were a credit to the school and their families. After a long day, staff and pupils were exhausted, but all in attendance agreed, that the day was well worth it.  The next rewards trip will be before Christmas with pupils who meet the criteria invited to attend.

SPORTS AMBASSADORS

Braidhurst pupils, Hannah Gordon and Tony Sharkey, travelled to Hampden Park last week to attend the Youth Ambassadors Conference hosted by Sportscotland, the national agency for sport.  The lottery funded programme aims to help develop young people as leaders in sport.  Hannah and Tony participated in a series of workshops where they learned how to go about setting up a sports council and also how to help encourage greater pupil attendance at sports clubs within school.  After the workshops, Hannah and Tony met several Team GB Olympic medallists from Rio 2016, including, swimmer Robbie Renwick and hurdler Eilidh Doyle.  Speaking about the event, Hannah commented, “I felt very inspired after meeting the athletes and hopefully Tony and I can represent the school as sports ambassadors to the best of our abilities.”
