STEM Award for Braidhurst High School Robotics Club

With the start of the new academic year, it seems that the Braidhurst High School Robotics Club might be, hopefully on to a very successful year.

One of its teachers Mr Hussain has been honoured by his peers with an award in recognition for his efforts to encourage Braidhurst pupils to learn about STEM through the design, build and to participate in a global competition hosted by Vex Robotics.

Over the years, the club has been very successful and has built a strong foundation on which to continue this success into the future. The club is a true reflection of the diversity in the school.

Mr Hussain commented “I consider this award as belonging to all who have supported the club over the years, especially Mr Paterson the acting head of the Faculty of Technology, Mr Mearns the acting PT of Maths and Mrs Jeffrey from Learning Support”.

This award was given in the category of Inspiring Diversity in STEM and pictured with Mr Hussain are members of the Robotics Club.

This year Braidhurst High celebrates its 60th year and it looks like, hopefully, the school is off to a super start with the first of many awards to mark such a special occasion for its staff and pupils.

S1 Future Friday & Extra Curricular Night

We will be hosting an S1 Future Friday & Extra -Curricular sign up evening on 30th August at 6:30pm in the school. This night is an opportunity for pupils and parents/carers to discuss all extra-curricular opportunities in the school with those staff who will be running any regular clubs throughout the year. Pupils (or their parents/carers) are also encouraged to ‘sign up’ for the clubs that they are interested in either trying or committing to for the session. It has always been a fun and worthwhile night for all involved and is an opportunity to engage parents at an early opportunity within the year.

The format of the evening involves a short chat in the Assembly Hall, where an update of the start to the school year and explanation of the wonderful opportunities for all young people at Braidhurst will be heard, before the opportunity being given for each individual club to be showcased in the Canteen area. Staff or a representative from each club will be there to give further information and encourage our young people to commit to the club.

We hope to see you all at this very worthwhile event and ask that all parents/carers please complete the short survey:

Creative Industries Exhibition 2022

On Wed 20th and Thu 21st Apr 2022 our S4 creative industries class organised and ran a celebrating success event for the Primary 7 pupils of our feeder primary schools. All displays were designed by the creative industries students as part of their qualification. The class collated examples of pupil work from each faculty within Braidhurst and also arranged for a subject ambassador to speak to the P7’s and answer any questions they had.

Scottish Qualification Authority – Exam Arrangements

Study leave, for senior pupils who are sitting at least one National 5 course will begin on Monday 25th April.  Pupils will return on Monday 6th June.

Pupils who are sitting National 4 courses only and have no exams will be able to participate in the ‘Skills Development Week’, at the Forgewood Community Centre instead.  This will take place from 10th – 13th May.  If you require further details, contact Miss McKenna or Mr O’Toole.

Study facilities will be available in school for any senior pupils who need a quiet space to work.  If you require these, contact Mr Hendry who will be able to book you in.

Subjects will be offering some additional study and revision classes; individual class teachers will be able to provide more details on when these will take place.

School uniform: Full uniform will be required for any visit to the school.  This includes sitting exams, attending study classes, or using the study space.

SQA Estimates: The school is required to submit an estimated grade for every subject that a candidate is being presented for.  These are evidence based and reflect the work produced in assessments by each pupil.  If any pupil is unsure of their final estimate, they should ask their class teacher.

It should be noted that these estimates have still to be quality assured by the SQA and as such should not be taken as a guarantee of an appeal.

Illness: Any pupil who is unwell on the day of the exam or who have experienced any specific circumstances that may affect their exam performance should report this to Ms Kerr as early as possible on the day of the exam.

Mobile Phones and Smart Watches: In line with SQA policy no mobile phones or smart watches will be allowed in the exam hall.  A candidate guide produced by the SQA will be made available to all pupils.  It is the responsibility of each candidate to ensure that they follow the procedures and policies set down in this document. Any queries surrounding this should be directed to Ms Kerr.

Although the school will be closed to pupils on the above dates it will still be open for any pupil sitting an SQA exam.

Charity Fund Raising

The pupils have decided that the £610 raised during the non unform day that was held before Easter should be donated to the Ukraine appeal.  Thanks to all who donated to this worthy cause.

Parents Group

The AGM for the Braidhurst Parents/Carers Group will take place on Tuesday 24th May at 6.00pm in the school library. The group has two main functions, the first is to act as an advisory body to work with the school, the second is to raise money for the school fund.  If you would like to get involved in either or both of these of these aspects, then you will be very welcome to turn up on the night.  Alternatively, email the school to express your interest via the school website.

Kind regards,

David Gardiner

Join your local library

Thank you to Chris Wilson and NLC Libraries for this advert about Motherwell Library, how our families can join the library and the available services.

A huge part of our Braidhurst Reading School work is to encourage our entire school community to read. Feedback from our family surveys revealed that information on our local libraries would support this aim. N.B opening times are 10am-4pm.
