BBC GET INSPIRED EVENT

A small group of S5 girls were invited along to the BBC studios last Thursday to be a part of the audience for a live question and answer session with a panel of successful British female athletes.   The girls participated in a morning workshop where they discussed and created possible questions for the panel.   This was followed by the question and answer session which was broadcast live on the BBC website where two of our pupils were selected to ask the panel a question.

The panel consisted of:-

Beth Tweddle – Britain’s most successful gymnast

Hannah Miley – Double Commonwealth games gold medallist

Gemma Faye – Britain’s all time most capped football player

The girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience with some of them managing to capture the moment with a photograph with the athletes.   The show is available to view on BBC iPlayer until Saturday at noon.

Ewan Lees gains Highly Commended award in UK photo competition

Braidhurst High Photography students recently entered the Economic and Social Research Council ‘Changing World’ Young People’s Photographic Competition.
We were very pleased to hear that one of our pupils, Ewan Lees had gained a highly commended award for his photograph. He is hoping to attend the awards ceremony in London in March. Following on from this, his work will be shown alongside the other winning shots in the Menier Gallery in Southwark Street, London. The theme of the competition was to convey young peoples thoughts on how the world has changed or will continue to change.

SCOTTISH YOUTH PARLIAMENT

Braidhurst High School was host to the Scottish Youth Parliament Hustings for the constituency of Motherwell and Wishaw on Thursday the 19th of February.  The school was delighted to host this event, especially given that S4 pupil Barry Williams is standing as a candidate.  All candidates involved gave a confident account of themselves, outlining their policies and why they want to represent the young people of Motherwell and Wishaw.  Characteristically, Braidhurst pupils were warm and welcoming to all candidates, giving their home representative a special, rousing cheer.  Candidates spoke to a capacity audience of pupils from S1-S6.  It was wonderful to see the pupils fully engaged and actively participating in the political process.  Barry Williams summed up the event by saying “Make me YOUR voice and YOU will be heard.”

MANCHESTER TRIP

A group of 45 Braidhurst pupils made the journey south on Saturday 21st February to the Etihad Stadium to witness current Premier League Champions Manchester city take on Newcastle United.   After much deliberation over Mr Clarke’s quiz en route down, pupils arrived at the stadium and were able to spend time in the Club Store and surrounding areas.   Inside the stadium, pupils soaked up the atmosphere and only had to wait 45 seconds to see Argentinian World Cup star Sergio Aguero fire city ahead from the penalty spot.   What followed was a flurry of goals from a host of Premier League talent, with the final score ending 5-0 to the home team.   A superb day was had all round, with pupils excellent manners and first class behaviour being a credit to the school.
