ECO PROJECT

Pupils and staff of Braidhurst High School got together to kick start the school’s new Eco Projects with a garden blitz on Friday 2nd of October.  Pupils from S2-S6 spent two hours after school working hard to rejuvenate the school garden, repairing planters, litter picking and weeding.  A huge improvement was made in this short time and pupils were rewarded for their hard work with tea and sandwiches in the sunshine.  As part of this project pupils have been collecting empty 2 litre plastic bottles to build a greenhouse from recycled materials.

SCOTTISH CUP

The Scottish cup fixtures are now beginning and the under 16’s were the first team to get their cup campaign started.   This was the team who won the Scottish cup last year.   Braidhurst were due to play St Maurices in the first round.   Although the boys have managed to beat St Maurices before, they were facing a tough challenge.

In a changed formation to last year, Braidhurst started positively, moving the ball around quickly creating spaces on the park.  After some very good short range passing, Braidhurst found space behind the St Maurices defence allowing Jack Keary to cross the ball in for Jordan Falconer to score at the back post within four minutes.

Braidhurst continued to dominate possession with St Maurices trying to play the long ball up the park but the Braidy defence were wise to the tactic.   Braidhurst continued to push forward and it was only a matter of time until they scored another.    Lewis Gamble hit a shot from 25 yards out which flew into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

The second half began much the same as the first with Braidhurst enjoying most of the possession, although not moving the ball as quick as they could have.  As the game progressed, St Maurices started committing more players forward and were rewarded when they won a free kick at the edge of the box.   They scored from the resulting free kick to make it 2-1.

Braidhurst continued to have the majority of possession but knew they needed another to secure the victory.   With 15 minutes to go, Jack Keary provided the goal with a very nice finish after a cross from Greg Miller.

Well done to all the boys who played.   Best of luck in the next round.

JOHN PENTLAND’S VISIT

S5/6 Modern Studies pupils recently had the opportunity to quiz their local MSP, John Pentland.   He was warmly welcomed by all pupils who relished the opportunity to voice their concerns and hear about his plans for the community and Scotland.   Braidhurst pupils had given a great deal of thought to the questions that they wanted answered.   In return they received answers and they discussed issues that concerned them.   Barry Williams of S5 said “This was an informative and personally engaging visit that gave me the opportunity to have an insight into the forthcoming election”.   This was echoed by Eryn Lawrie an S6 pupil who said, “It gave me a better understanding of what goes on in parliament and what our MSP does to represent us”.   All pupils came away from the debate, invigorated by their experience, ready to cast, what will be for many, their first vote in 2016.

ST ANDREW’S HOSPICE FUN RUN

A group of Braidhurst staff and senior pupils rose to the challenge and took part in the St Andrews Hospice Fun run.   Pupils had been inspired to participate following a presentation about the work of the hospice from Lyndsay Craig (school liaison officer).   All completed the circuit of Strathclyde Park, some ran others walked however special mention to David Gardiner who was, again, the first member of staff completing the 6K in 20 minutes.

COMPETITION

S2 pupils in Braidhurst High Art & Design Department have been busy preparing their entries for this year’s North Lanarkshire road Safety Calendar Competition.   They have been studying advertising techniques and analysing television advertisements to allow them to develop their ideas for their posters.   All the pupils have enjoyed working out a slogan and drawing out ideas to complement the poster design.
