DARCI BURNS – NORTH LANARKSHIRE’S SCHOOLS’ PIPE BAND

Braidhurst pupil Darci Burns, who is a member of North Lanarkshire’s Schools’ pipe band, was recently credited with an award at a reception outside the Civic Centre as her band won the ‘Champions of Champions’ title for the best performances across all five major piping championships. The North Lanarkshire’s Schools’ pipe band have also been given the proud honour of marching down 6th Avenue in New York City as part of the annual celebration of Scottish culture in the Big Apple next April. Well done Darci.

SUMMER SHOWCASE

The school’s ‘Summer Showcase’, an extravaganza of live music, drama and dance, took place on Thursday 7th June, in-front of a packed audience, who were thoroughly entertained by the fantastic acts. The show opened with a rousing performance from our highland pipers and drummers before moving into a blistering performance of songs from the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ soundtrack by the wind band. Other highlights from the event included the primary choir, the drama sketches and our fantastic dancers. The event was led by Faculty Head of Performing Arts, Ms. Donnelly, ably assisted by Music teachers, Mr Walker and Mr Crawford, and Drama teacher, Mrs Reilly. Once again Braidhurst pupils delivered an amazing show.  Well done to all who were involved.

Art and Design Drugs Mural transition project

The S1 pupils of Braidhurst High School and primary seven pupils of Muir Street primary have been working hard to complete a collaborative drugs mural project.

Having successfully completed this bright and eye-catching mural, this piece will now be entered into the Choices for Life transition competition 2017, held by Police Scotland as part of their Substance misuse initiative.

In raising awareness of substance misuse the pupils of Braidhurst High school and Muir Street primary, hope to show the risks of taking substances. Building on their knowledge and skills gained on the visual elements of Line, Shape, Form and Colour to coincide with research into substance use the pupils have created a dynamic visual. This has been displayed through colourful sweetie like imagery interspersed with the grotesque drawings of bottles, needles and pipes etc along with a word search of the associated effects of substance use.

Theatre Trip

36 pupils recently visited the Playhouse in Edinburgh to watch a performance of the International smash hit musical comedy… Hairspray

Hairspray takes place during the swinging sixties in Baltimore, Maryland. Tracy Turnblad is a big girl with big hair and an even bigger dream: to dance her way onto national TV, and into the heart of teen idol Link Larkin. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for integration. But can she win equality and Link’s heart without denting her ‘do?

All the pupils had a fabulous evening out watching this professional musical production, many of whom are preparing for their roles in this years school show – Sunshine on Leith.

Tickets for our school production will soon be on sale so keep your eyes posted on the website for more details.
