GAP MEDICS

The school presented former pupil Leigh Gorman with a cheque for £105 as a contribution towards her volunteering trip with Gap Medics to Africa.  Leigh plans to spend four weeks, next January/February 2017, as a volunteer at a hospital and orphanage where she will gain invaluable hospital work experience.  The trip will hopefully help her to pursue her dream of studying nursing at Edinburgh’s Napier University, “I am passionate about getting into the course at Napier and about volunteering.  Right now, I’m feeling a mix of nerves and excitement.” Leigh is still in need of donations to fund her trip and her next event is a race night in Parkhead next month.

ALTON TOWERS

135 pupils and 9 staff had a fantastic day out at Alton Towers theme park last Friday. The pupils were invited to attend the trip as a reward for excellent behaviour, attendance and timekeeping from last session. The trip was a fantastic success and the pupils were a credit to the school and their families. After a long day, staff and pupils were exhausted, but all in attendance agreed, that the day was well worth it.  The next rewards trip will be before Christmas with pupils who meet the criteria invited to attend.

SPORTS AMBASSADORS

Braidhurst pupils, Hannah Gordon and Tony Sharkey, travelled to Hampden Park last week to attend the Youth Ambassadors Conference hosted by Sportscotland, the national agency for sport.  The lottery funded programme aims to help develop young people as leaders in sport.  Hannah and Tony participated in a series of workshops where they learned how to go about setting up a sports council and also how to help encourage greater pupil attendance at sports clubs within school.  After the workshops, Hannah and Tony met several Team GB Olympic medallists from Rio 2016, including, swimmer Robbie Renwick and hurdler Eilidh Doyle.  Speaking about the event, Hannah commented, “I felt very inspired after meeting the athletes and hopefully Tony and I can represent the school as sports ambassadors to the best of our abilities.”

S1 ELECTIVE CLASSES

The school’s elective classes for S1 are now up and running.   Pupils are able to choose from an array of subjects including Pottery, Musical Theatre, Spanish and Robotics.   Mrs Scott, the school librarian, and Mrs Magowan, Principal Teacher of Modern Languages, are leading the school newsletter elective, where pupils meet in the library to improve their literacy skills by writing content and designing the layout of the school’s termly newsletter which is posted on the school website and paper copies issued out to parents and members of the local community.

S1 PARENTS’ EVENING

On Thursday, 8th September S1 Parents’ Evening took place, this was a great success with a high number of pupils and parents attending to learn more about the school’s extra-curricular programme.   S2 pupils Olivia Biggart and Cameron May and S5/6 pupils Tegan Quinton, Ben and Kieran McDougall each took to the floor to promote some of the many clubs on offer, in particular those available within the school’s Physical Education and Performing  Arts Departments.   Pupils then had the chance to sign up for their favourite lunch or after school club there and then.
