History

History teaches pupils many transferable skills such as critical literacy, essay writing and ICT, allows pupils to develop their leadership and collaborative skills through paired and group work and also develop skills of debate, interpretation and argument.
History offers an excellent and varied academic education and is particularly useful for careers in: Law, Business, Journalism, Media, Management, Civil Service, Travel and Tourism, Teaching.

Geography

Geography offers pupils the chance to develop a number of useful and transferable skills which will serve them well beyond the Geography classroom. Skills that are developed include literacy, numeracy, communication and collaborative working.

An understanding of Geography is a valued skill by employers; pupils will find a qualification in Geography useful for careers in engineering, travel and tourism, teaching, media, business, science and many more.

The faculty of History and Geography at St. Stephen’s aims to provide a quality education for all pupils and promote the study of History and Geography through a variety of courses.


The aims of the History and Geography faculty are:

• To promote the study of History and Geography within the school.
• To develop an increased awareness of the role, relevance and importance of History and Geography in today’s world
• To teach, through the course work, the transferable skills of research, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation
• To develop interests in understanding of and concern for the environment
• To provide a programme of progression of work from S1 to S6, and further education, by delivering a structured, coherent, stimulating and enjoyable course for pupils
• Develop the four capacities of the Curriculum for Excellence in all pupils in order that they can leave school better prepared to take their place in society
