Understanding letter sounds helps children develop their reading and writing skills. Becoming fluent with letter recognition allows them to become more familiar and at ease with the alphabet.

 Use their own drawing and written marks to express ideas and feelings
 Experiment with symbols, letters and words in writing.
 Recognise some familiar words or letters
 Use books to find interesting information.
 Recognise the link the between the written and spoken word.
