Old ways won’t open new doors

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending an introductory session on autism through Elaine Smith from Autism Scotland. This session was organised by the Education Society and proved an extremely valuable experience to learn about a topic that, although I have heard small pockets of information, I had little knowledge of. This wasn’t through intended […]

Maths Anxiety

Maths anxiety is very real.  Not only that, but it is very common.  During school, I would always hear people saying ‘I hate maths’ , or ‘I’m so confused’ and ‘I can’t do this.’  I was definitely one of those people, and similar to many – maths was the only subject that made me feel […]

Can maths be taught creatively?

To most people the common perception of maths is it being never ended pages of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division sums, so imagine maths being taught creatively? Yes, I was surprised at this thought too. Personally, I am a very creative person and have a strong love for art, so I find the possibility of art […]

Need a hand with maths? You can count on me!

Should children be allowed to use their fingers to help them count? Children are often made to feel silly for using their fingers to count. As a child, I struggled with numbers – they seemed completely alien and frankly they intimidated me. I was told numerous times by numerous teachers to ‘stop using your […]

The ever-changing society who is incapable of change.

This week, our Value’s lecture really hit me hard. Not purely based on the content– the history of the Civil Right movement and that of feminism, is not new to me. Most of us would have heard the horrors through school and so forth, but it is scary how used to it I was hearing the […]

The Misconception of health care in Developing countries.

Often when third world countries such as Nigeria, Nepal, India etc are referred to the primary thoughts people have of the country are dangerous, dirty and daunting.  Many of the volunteers upon discovering they would be going to Nigeria experienced shock, fear and even the consideration of not going at all. This fear was further […]

Racism is everywhere

Before my lecture on racism, I always thought the minority of people were racist, because it was rare for people to verbally and physically attack people, due to their race. However, it wasn’t until this lecture that I realised how complex racism is. Firstly, I learnt that cultural and institutional racism does impact peoples’ individual […]

Is there a place for old mathematical concepts in modern day maths?

This week we discovered Pascal’s Triangle – a number pattern in the form of a triangle where the numbers above added together give you a value for a new row. Within this number pattern, there are all different kinds of maths intertwined allowing us to explore it further in depth. However, whilst learning about old […]

Society does not define who YOU are

Last week during Derek’s Lecture, we had an important input on on Racism and Patriarchy. We looked very closely at society’s views and got told about the disastrous event of Emmett Till and how he received the brutality of Racism. Emmett was so badly beaten that even his mother decided to leave his casket open […]

Structural Inequalities Reflection

This week we participated in a very eye opening task within the values module. We were split into four groups and given envelopes. These envelopes had the materials that we had to use, as part of the task, to create a useful resource for a first year student at Dundee university. Each team opened the […]

Comment on The Little Change in the World by Taylor Jordan

Great post, Courtney. It is sad that we have to think ourselves as ‘lucky’ for not always being the subject of racial discrimination, nobody should feel that way. I do not understand why racism exists and why we let society continue this way, no one should have to fear being stopped at the side of the road by police when they know they are innocent, and to be wrongly convicted of a crime simply because of the colour of their skin is shocking. I hope one day we can move past the racist ways set in place in the world today, because it is not fair.

Racism

Understanding ourselves lecture shows how much evil there is in the world today. People judging others because of the colour of their skin. Racism a highly sensitive topic that has been around for years. The formation of racists groups such as the Ku Klux Klan who had a hatred so strong for black people they […]

Values Reflection

The values workshop was a very eye-opening experience. This is because the task we were giving had an alternative meaning linked to the inequalities of children in education. Each group were giving resources to complete an object that would be useful for a new student on campus and they were then rated out of 10. […]

Fulfilling the Role of a Primary Teacher

Primary school teaching is a profession that I have always been very passionate about as I believe it would be a very rewarding career. This is because I have always enjoyed looking after children as I have a caring and patient nature. I understand that teaching can make a great impact on young children’s lives […]

The Art of Maths

When this concept was explained in our lecture, I did not fully understand. I feel this may happen many more times throughout the module as I familiarise myself with maths again. I decided to remain positive towards maths and explore the idea for myself until I both understood the how and the why. I think that I understand that […]

Maths IS important!

“Is maths important?” my lecturer asked during a recent Discovering Mathematics workshop. My exam driven former self would have explicitly answered no to this question, as I had all sorts of weird and wonderful equations and rules drilled into my head at this point – none of which I have actually implemented within my everyday […]

Racism Today

The lecture last Tuesday informed us all about the raw, harsh truth of society today. It reminded us that there is a long history of racism in the world; yet at the same time it is a current affair that lots of people are still having to deal with, today. We first were told about […]
