Rights in action, every day

Across St Francis’, our classrooms are full of rights! Each class has worked together to create its own Class Charter, bringing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) to life in a way that is meaningful to our pupils.

Through discussion, sharing ideas and making decisions together,  pupils explored the rights that matter to them and considered what respecting these rights looks like in their classroom every day.

Pupil voice is at the heart of every Class Charter.

Our pupils played an important part in choosing the rights represented in their charter and discussing how everyone can take rights-respecting actions. Every class has created something that reflects its pupils, their ideas and their shared commitment to making their classroom a place where everyone feels safe, respected, included and listened to.

Living Our Rights

Our Class Charters are much more than colourful displays on our walls. They are a living part of classroom life.

Throughout the year, pupils and staff will return to their charters during learning, conversations and reflection. As our knowledge of the UNCRC grows, our charters will help us recognise how rights are respected in the choices we make, the way we treat one another and the experiences we share.

Our Class Charters connect to many of the rights in the UNCRC, with each class choosing articles that are meaningful to them. Two rights are particularly visible in the way we create and use our charters.

🗣️ Article 12: Respect for Children’s Views

Every child has the right to express their views and for those views to be taken seriously.

Pupil voice is at the heart of our Class Charters. Our pupils share their ideas, listen to one another and help decide which rights will be represented in their classroom.

Article 29: Goals of Education

Education should help every child develop their talents and abilities and encourage respect for human rights and for others.

Our Class Charters help create classrooms built on dignity and respect, while developing pupils’ understanding of their own rights and the rights of others.

And the best part? No two charters are the same! Each one has been created by its own class and reflects the ideas, creativity and voices of the pupils who belong there.
