Our first trips as P6

Welcome back everyone!

we have had another epic week in P6, our favourite so far because we went on not now but two trips!

our first trip was on Monday and we went to the Urban Roots programme which is part of the New Victoria Allotments in Pollokshields. we met a man named Stuart who challenged us to go around all of the allotment gardens and try to spot as many different fruits and vegetables as we could. Some of them were hard to recognise as they can look different when grown locally. For example the courgettes were huge compared to the ones in the shops and some were yellow instead of green!

While we were looking around the allotments we met some people who were working on their gardens and they let us take home some of their beautiful flowers!

After we wandered around Stuart challenged us to look at a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs he had laid out on the table and see if we could tell which ones were grown in the allotments and which ones were bought in the supermarket. It was very interesting and made us think more about buying locally and growing our own food.

The next day we went on another trip, this time to the Hidden Gardens at the Tramway. we met a lady called Rhona who told us all about the importance of buying locally as buying foods that are not grown in the uk and are not grown seasonally could be very damaging to the planet as it raises our carbon footprint.

The other thing we have been learning about in our topic this week is alternatives to dairy milk. We learned last week that dairy farming can be really harmful to the environment as it releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the air, uses up lots of land and crops and wastes lots of water.

This week we did a taste test of five different dairy free milks. We tried oat, rice, soy, almond and coconut milk. We had to describe them based on look before trying them. It was so much fun!

We have two more trips next week before out September weekend holiday. On Monday we are going to the GFT and on Thursday the whole school are going to Edinburgh zoo.

Friday the 13th!! :O

Good morning and welcome back to the P6 blog.

Today might be the scary Friday the 13th AND a full moon but that hasn’t stopped all of our amazing learning this week! 🙂

In numeracy this week we have been continuing our work on data handling paying close attention to Pictograms.

“A pictogram is a graph made up on pictures” -Zara

“We were studying pictograms about different colours and fruits”- Chantel

“We then made our own pictograms using data that was all about the number of Vegans in the world.”- Alisha

“Veganism is linked to our topic!”- Fatimah.

In literacy we were studying alliteration in our poetry class.

“Alliteration is when each word starts with the same letter”- Arisha

“We were looking at different types of jobs”- Farah

“People think only boys can be builders and girls can be beauticians. But that’s not true.”- Chantel

“We were trying to show that genders shouldn’t have specific roles and society is tricking us to believing this”- Zara

“We were also using similes which we had learned about the week before.”- Alisha

We wrote a poem as a whole class that used numbers at the beginning.

Have a look at some of our ideas:

On Wednesday we were doing a research task that was all about Social Enterprises in the local area.

“We had to look up different shops and businesses and we had to find out what they sold and who they supported and how they make money”- Fatimah

“I researched the ApparelXChange who sell school uniform that has been owned”- Amaya

“I researched Milk Café who run a café for women in the community”- Chantel

“I looked up MerrygoRound who sell second hand baby products”- Zara

“I looked up Bike for Good who sell and fix second hand bikes”- Farah

Finally, in PE we went outside to play Basketball.

“We were playing elbow tig as our warm up and learning how important it is for boys and girls to work together”- Alisha.

“We were focussing on overhead passes, chest passes and bounce passes”- Amaya

We had so much fun!

Stay tuned for next week when we are going on not one but TWO trips. We can’t wait!

The first week of September

welcome back to the P6 blog.  We have been learning a lot this week and we would like to share it with you.

In PE we have been continuing our ball skills with different passes. We added the bounce pass and over head to our repertoire.

“I enjoyed the piggy in the middle game because it was fun and you had to keep a close eye on your opponent”

”I liked it because you could trick your opponent” Sufyaan

In maths this week we have been working on our skills in Multiplication.

“We played a game of times tables. The teacher would shout out a number and you had to stand or sit depending on if it was in a particular table” Hubaib

”I loved playing bingo because I had to concentrate” Hamza

”I got really good at writing the sums correctly in my jotter” Antony.

We are also studying Data Handling where this week we looked at Venn Diagram

”it has 2 circles and it shows you information about what they have in common and what they have that’s different” Amaya

”the circles overlap each other and the middle section is used if the objects applies to both criteria”  Hubaib

In Literacy we have been continuing our work on Report Writing and this week we were looking at the elements introduction and conclusion.

In topic we are looking at how farming impacts the environment. We were researching and highlighting different articles and used the information to create our own fact files.

We had a class debate to voice our opinions on farming.

Finally, Hamza and Farah were chosen to be our class Junior Road Safety officers. They went on a trip this week to Glasgow City Chambers to learn about their important jobs this year including tackling the traffic and bad parking outside the school gates.

Thanks for reading and hopefully you join us for our next blog!

Our learning this week

Welcome back to P6’s class blog.

we have done sooooooo much learning this week and we are excited to share it with you.

In maths we have been revising addition and subtraction and using our literacy skills in maths to solve word problems.

We were split into groups and has to solve different problems in a specific time.

my favourite station was the chilli challenge station because we had a mix of sums and I got to challenge myself- Hanna

i like the ladder sum challenge because they were tricky and you had to get them all right for the ladder to work- Zayan

i loved the matching the answer to the question station because I found it the easiest station and I got to answer lots of questions- Aliyan.

we are also looking at data handling and identifying different types of charts and graphs. We were studying pie charts, line graphs, pictographs and bar charts. The ones we were loooking at were all about farming around the world- just like our topic.

In literacy we are continuing our work on report writing by studying different topic sentences. We got to use different. Non-fiction books to help us find facts and information about different topics and create different topic sentences about each.

In PE we have been perfecting our chest passes on basketball. We also started looking at overhead passes. Miss Mowatt introduced to a game called Knock Out that we are obsessed with! You have to chest pass across the circle without dropping it!

Finally Miss Cohen came to our class to talk to us about social justice. We had to look at different pictures and decide what they were about: class, faith, race, gender and employment. It was very interesting! We also got to think of our own opinions about lots of things.

thank you for reading our blog and don’t forget to leave a comment!

Welcome to P6!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to P6 class blog. We had an amazing first week back at school and we are excited for our new class and the adventures we will have!

this week we have been revising our knowledge in maths. We have been working on addition and subtraction with carrying. We worked independently on this and are getting better every day!

in literacy we have been looking at nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives. We will be using these lots in our writing this year so had some practise in teams to see how many words we could think of

We we have also been spending lots of time getting to know each other and learning to work well together. Last week we had to make a landmark using only marshmallows and spaghetti. The winning team was Antony, Amaya, Safa, Chantel, Zayan and Roshany who made the pyramids of Egypt.

We had an extreme version of pe on Monday with primary 6/7 and 7. It was epic!

We also have a new student teacher who joined our class on Tuesday. She will be with us for the next five weeks.

This is week was Antony’s birthday. He turned 11!

We can’t wait to share our learning with you every Friday!

hope you enjoyed our blog, thank you for reading.
