Hello and welcome to P2a! The class teacher is Miss Struthers. Mrs Schulz teaches the class on a Thursday and Friday morning.
Numeracy
Within numeracy this term, we have focused on calculations: addition and subtraction, measurement, and money. We have built on our place value and number word sequence knowledge from term one. We use a lot of concrete materials, active learning and digital tools to support our numeracy understanding. Within addition and subtraction, we are exploring different strategies to use for numbers up to 10, 20 and above. Within money, we are recognising different coins and using our skills to calculate up to 20p. We have explored using non-standard tools for measuring the length, height, width, volume and area of objects
Literacy
In literacy, we have been recapping the 42 Jolly Phonics sounds, and are using these sounds to blend and form. We use Jolly Grammar to support the children’s literacy progression. As part of these lessons, the children will learn about alternative spellings for vowels, and aspects of literacy such as adjectives, nouns, and verbs.
Within writing, we have been focusing on persuasion and opinion writing. We use various tools to support writing, such as Clicker and sound walls. We regularly focus on use of capital letters, full stops, and finger spaces. We have begun to construct larger sentences, using connectives, and use blending to help when writing unfamiliar words. We will be developing our vocabulary, which can be used when writing sentences.
Within reading, the children will read one book a week, and will have activities to complete related to the book. Reading books will go home on a Wednesday and are expected back on a Monday. Mrs Schulz teaches tricky words to the pupils to support their sight word and sound knowledge. Similarly, to writing, we focus on the use of sounding out to help when reading.
HWB
During this term, we have been looking at our emotions and how we can regulate them. We have used tools such as Kitbag and mindfulness/relaxation videos to regulate how we feel. We have also focused on kindness and how it is important for the school values (kind, safe and respectful) and developing and maintaining friendships. During PE we have looked at team and ball skills, with the focus of football and basketball. Our PE days are Monday (indoors) and Tuesday (outdoors).
IDL
This term Primary 2a have been focusing on Festive Fun, an enterprise topic. We worked collaboratively with the Primary 2/3 class to create a company, logo, jingle, and products. We discussed and explored what a company needs and the costing of products. We designed and created Christmas Tree Baubles out of sustainable wood and biodegradable slime. These products were sustainable as we made links to protecting out planet. We really
enjoyed making the products. We presented our company in front of a Dragons Den Panel and won best logo. We also sold our products at the Christmas Fayre, which all sold out. During this topic we worked on our creativity, communication and developing the young workforce skills.
