P3 ~ Miss Brown

Literacy:

This term in Literacy, we have been continuing to develop our phonics skills to help us with reading and writing. The children explored alliteration, similes and onomatopoeia, using what they learned to create their own Scottish-themed poems. We also learned about different types of nouns, including common, proper, concrete and abstract nouns, and practised spotting the differences between them. To finish this block, everyone learned and performed a famous Scottish poem in front of our class. Five finalists were then chosen to perform for our special judges, our winner was Rebekah.

Numeracy:

In Numeracy, we have been building our confidence with multiplication and division, focusing on the 4- and 8-times tables. The children have been using a range of strategies to help them, including repeated addition, grouping and practical resources. We have also been learning how to estimate numbers up to 20 and practise rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. Through games, discussion and problem-solving activities, the children have been developing their mental maths skills and explaining their thinking using mathematical language.

Health and Wellbeing:

In Health and Wellbeing, we have been learning about friendships and what it means to be a good friend. The children discussed strategies to use if they fall out with others and how to solve problems kindly. We have also learned about staying safe around roads and when travelling in vehicles. In PE, our focus this term has been gymnastics. The children practised basic gymnastic movements such as balance, creating high, medium and low balances with their peers. We also worked on jumping and landing safely, focusing on good control and safe technique.

Other Curricular Areas:

Our topic this term has been Scotland. The children learned about different places across Scotland, including towns and cities, the Highlands and Lowlands, and the features of the land. We explored famous Scottish landmarks and used our bodies to create shapes to represent them. The children designed their own tartans and researched what their family tartans might look like. We also learned about famous Scots such as Robert Burns and Alexander Graham Bell and researched their lives and why they are important to Scotland. We lastly looked at famous Scottish traditions and food where we had the opportunity to try traditional Scottish foods such as haggis and shortbread.

We also celebrated Reading Week this term and took part in lots of fun and engaging activities. These included drop-and-read sessions, reading in funny places, recreating the front covers of our favourite books and paired reading with other classes. Throughout the week, the children also enjoyed exploring their favourite authors and sharing much-loved stories.

In Art, the children learned about the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. They explored his unique style and used this as inspiration for their own artwork based of his famous rose.

In French, the children have been learning the names of different French foods. They used this new vocabulary to create their own French café menus, which they particularly enjoyed.

In RME, the children learned about artefacts that may be found in a church and discussed their importance. They retold the story of Jonah and the Whale and explored the values and messages within the story. We have recently begun learning about Buddhism, where the children learned the story of Siddhartha Gautama.

Finally, we have celebrated lots of wider achievements in P3 so far this term. Our Kelly was awarded a silver prize at her gymnastics in her tumble work. Olly C worked hard to finish his Lego titanic and shared his building journey with us. Lastly, our Jorji shared with us some fantastic art work she has been working on at home. Lots to celebrate this term in P3!
