Literacy:

This term in Literacy we have been learning about different writing styles, developing our reading skills and learning new sounds. In writing, we have looked at fact files and personal writing. The start of the term focused on us! As a class we discussed similarities and differences between ourselves, our favourite things and what made us unique. We then practised writing in our jotters, focusing on our letter formation, writing on the line and adding detail to our work. The last few weeks, our class have worked on creating a fact file all about Dinosaurs. Each week we have looked at a different part of the dinosaur era – characteristics of a dinosaur, what a palaeontologist does and this week we looked at dinosaur habitats.

In reading, we have spent time practising our sounds and thinking of lots of different words containing that sound. We had great fun this week as we were allowed to write our words on the table with whiteboard pens! In our classroom, we asked Miss Munnoch if we could create a proper library with a till (so we could ‘charge’ for late returns), a scanner to scan books in and out, an open/close sign and a chair for the ‘librarian’ to sit on. We had lots of fun creating the area and have loved using the space. Our class have visited the school library every week and we have walked along to the Buckhaven library twice this term.

Numeracy:

In numeracy, our class have been focusing on place value, addition and subtraction. We have looked at the value of numbers and identified Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones. Our lessons have been a mix of practical activities and jotter work. We have identified numbers from 0 up to 10,000 and have just started looking at numbers before/after a given number. Our confidence is growing when we are calculating addition and subtraction sums. We have used our fingers, cubes, number squares and number lines to help us solve calculations.

Miss Turner and Miss Greenwood have been teaching us all about 2D shapes. We have identified different shapes such as squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagon and pentagons. Last week we used these shapes to create our own tiling patterns, making sure there were no gaps. This week, we started to learn about measurement. We used cubes to measure the height of the toy dinosaurs in class. We will move on to using standard units of measurement such as metres and centimetres.

Health and Wellbeing:

In health this term, we have been discussing our feelings and how we can regulate ourselves. Through using the Emotion Works program, we have learnt the names of our feelings and what our bodies might feel like when we are experiencing those emotions. We have also learnt the names of our body parts and who we can talk to if we need help.

In PE, Miss Munnoch has taught us different games we can play and we have completed different fitness stations – sprinting, jumping on the spot, arm circles, step ups, star jumps and skipping. Miss Turner has been teaching us ball skills. We have learnt how to throw and catch a ball in different ways and played some games to practise these skills.

Other Updates:

This term, we have been very lucky to have STAMP music visit us again. Each week, Ellen from STAMP visits our classroom and teaches us about rhythm, beat, different music styles and singing. We have had lots of fun using our voices and instruments when singing songs.

We also had a visit from ScrapAntics who specialise in Loose Parts Play. They taught us how to use the loose parts equipment and our imagination to create a dinosaur island, a dinosaur theme park and a theme park ride. We had lots of fun and can’t wait to build more things!
