Primary 6 have started their journey with Daily Writing to improve writing content and layout. The first aim was to use connectives in writing and they have managed to reach this aim! It takes a lot of practise and editing but together, they are working to develop confidence and skills within this area. The next aim will focus on openers and how to start sentences in an interesting way! They have also been exploring Scots language as part of literacy and not only studied the poem ‘To a Mouse’ by Robert Burns and ‘The Gruffalo in Scots’ by Julia Donaldson, but they also created their own Silly Scots Stories! It was good fun and they are hoping to apply the learning of Scots words into comic strips next.
In number and maths, P6 have been exploring different strategies they can use to solve addition and subtraction problems. Some people prefer the formal written methods whilst others like using the jump strategy on an empty number line or simply partitioning the numbers to make them easier to manage. They have also been exploring angles – identifying different types of angles and how to measure these. For the shared finish focus, the class created art work either focussing on measuring angles they created, naming the types of angles they could identify or using right-angle checkers to check they had right angles in the correct place.
Linked to the literacy work based on Scots language, P6 also explored the feelings, triggers and body sensations found in the texts ‘To a Mouse’ and ‘The Gruffalo in Scots’. They explored the six cogs from Emotion Works to pick apart how the characters were feeling then created vision boards to show the findings in a creative way.
In art with Miss Munnoch, the class have been focussing on line and colour, considering the use of perception and shading to create optical illusions. It has been good fun and some children have even created these on apps on their iPads.
