P3b.1 had a great time in the science garden today. We collected autumn leaves and sorted them by type and colour. When we finished, we popped them all in the compost box to make food for next year’s plants.
Active Spelling
During literacy time today, P3b.2 were enjoying some active spelling activities. These are easy, fun stations that can also be done at home to reinforce spelling words and sounds.
Numeracy
P3b.1 have been playing maths games to practice their mental addition and subtraction. Decisions, decisions!
Spelling
Happy Monday to you all 🙂
Please click on the link below for the spelling sounds and words for this week that can be practised at home. Please note that due to the Maths Challenge homework there is no obligation to do any other tasks.
Homework Challenge!
Being numerate helps us to function responsibly in everyday life and contribute effectively to society. It increases our opportunities within the world of work and establishes foundations which can be built upon through lifelong learning. Numeracy is not only a subset of mathematics; it is also a life skill which permeates and supports all areas of learning, allowing young people access to the wider curriculum. Monday 23rd September – Family Numeracy and Maths Homework Challenge
Families can choose one activity (or more if you wish) from the grid and work on this together over the next two weeks. How you record and share your homework is up to you! There are some suggestions on the grid but please feel free to be as inventive as you wish. This homework will last two weeks. On Friday 4th October, the eldest child in each family should bring in their family homework and the pupils will get a chance to share their activity with the school community. The homework should be carried out as a family and each activity can be simplified or extended to allow everyone to take part. There are lots of real life challenges to allow our pupils to see the benefit numeracy and maths has on our everyday life. These activities are designed to be fun, active and engaging for all our learners. It will not only promote their numeracy, but it will also develop their problem solving, creativity and collaboration skills.
Please share your learning activities with us on twitter! @kirkhillPS and use our #

Can all children in P3b continue to use their bingo grid activities to practice their spelling words please?
P3b.1 have rhythm!
P3b.1 are enjoying music lessons from Mrs Duggie every second Monday. This week we have been singing and bouncing a ball to keep the rhythm.
Fun in the Numeracy Hub
Primary 3b.2 have been have been very busy learning more about numbers to 100. We have been looking at place value, doubling numbers and number bonds. Here are some of the ways we are working on this 🙂
Here we are ordering some numbers.
This ice cream game helps us think about hundreds, tens and units.
We are getting really good at doubling bigger numbers.
Numicon is helping us with our number bonds to 10. We are getting so quick with these!
We have also been watching some Jack Hartman videos, great fun!
Homework
Homework jotters will be coming home today. Inside you will find a homework bingo grid that we are going to be using up until the October holidays. There is also a little information sheet with instructions on how to complete this.
You will also see an overview of our Phonics for the first six weeks stuck in the jotter. We are currently on Week 3 so these are the sounds to focus on for any spelling activities this week.  Please ensure you hand in jotters on the 4th of October so we can update the grid after our consolidation/ assessment week.
Try to complete one spelling activity and one maths activity per week. The topic activities do not need to be completed every week and some tasks may take longer that one week. You do not need to hand in your jotter weekly, it is a multi-use jotter for across the curriculum which you are welcome to use for any of your activities. We will ask for the jotters to come in during consolidation weeks to update.
This term our focus is on reading for enjoyment at home, please enjoy reading from your own books, library books or you are welcome to borrow from the class library.
We hope you have fun doing your homework!
P3b.1 Stained Glass Windows
P3b.1 used a variety of media to create stained glass windows after learning about the features of a church. We used tracing paper, tissue paper and black sugar paper to make our windows. We hope you’ll agree that they look fantastic!
Stunning Stained Glass!
Primary 3B.2 have been learning about the features of a church. One of the things we learned about were stained glass windows. We had a go at creating our own! We used 2D shapes that we had been learning about during numeracy time and tried to make them symmetrical 🙂 Don’t they look beautiful with the light shining through them?
