Lots of learning outdoors

We started off our outdoor session today with a word game using lots of vowels and consonants. Who knew we could create so many words with only a few letters and special golden question marks?!

We then moved on to practise our skills in observing, recording and analysing.

Finally we worked on a magic square challenge. We didn’t quite get it completed but we learned a lot about teamwork as we tried. 😊

Leaf collection, analysis and rubbing

Following on from our lesson last week watching The Promise and thinking about colours and leaves and trees, we decided to go outside in the search for some oak leaves as well as many others.

We really enjoyed collecting the leaves, then focusing on their colours, sizes and textures. We started making some patterns outside, but the weather wasn’t kind, so we headed in and created loads inside. The whole class were entirely silent as we worked on these beautiful creations!

We then played a tree identification game on the woodland trust website and finished off the morning by using oil pastels and producing some delightful leaf rubbings.

The Promise

We listened to the story The Promise by Nicola Davies and Laura Carlin. We also watched the animation of the story which was launched in Scotland on that day, Monday 26th October.

After watching we had some really interesting discussions on how the story made us feel, the importance of nature and life cycles. We then went on to write some beautiful poems and create some fun pictures with bright paper.

Here is the link to the website where you can watch it again and maybe try some of the other activities mentioned.

Quadrilateral investigations

We spent time today learning all about quadrilaterals and their properties including details about the types of angles they have. We learned that every quadrilateral has four sides and the sum of its internal angles is 360 degrees.

We wondered if every quadrilateral could be split into two triangles and we had great fun making all the shapes and working out that they can. 😊

Lots of learning outside!

What an incredible morning we had oozing with learning! First we warmed up with some shape name games and making different four sided shaped with Mrs Kelly’s new rainbow sticks. After that we moved on to a game to revise our understanding of place value. Finally we moved on to learning how to use orienteering punches and got very out of breath running around searching for the correct numbers to punch our cards. We rounded off with another shape categorising game.

There were certainly lots of happy faces as we headed back indoors for lunch.

Orienteering

Today we enjoyed taking part in five different activities introducing us to orienteering. We learned how important it is to identify where North is on a map and how helpful it is to hold a map the correct way round. We used our skills to locate numbers and words and to record them and we also enjoyed following route directions and making up our own routes.

We faced drizzly rain all morning, but that didn’t stop our enthusiasm and enjoyment learning outside. 😊 🌧

Outdoor learning

We had a great morning learning about birds eye views and then creating our own maps.

In our groups we decided on natural materials to use to create our very own maps of the school grounds. We then collected materials and created these brilliant maps.

Once we had finished we returned all the materials to where we found them, we are trying hard to  remember that all we take back inside from being outdoors are our memories. 😊

20th March 2020

Today the school is closing earlier than planned.

We will be sad to leave our class, school and friends.

We didn’t want the school to close.

We hope it opens again soon so we can see our friends again soon.

To do our class work, we will be using  Google Classroom at home. We will be doing some activities as well to help our learning. At home we will have lots of family time. Our teacher has given us home learning packs to help us at home.

We are very sad but we wish everybody a good time at home and hope to see everyone soon!

17.02.20 – 21.02.20

Over the past week primary 4.20 have been learning all about The Vikings. They completed lots of work around where the vikings came from, where they invaded and how they got there.

This led to really interesting discussions and all the class really wanted to design their own longboat.

The class all worked in groups to create longboats, shields and even armour!

The class have have also been working on their own Chinese scroll paintings. This was linked to our learning around Chinese New Year.

Within numeracy we have been revising time. The class played a fun time game where they had to work as a team to match the clocks to the correct time. This worked really well and everyone had lots of fun learning!
