IDL – Number Fun with the Glasgow Gruffalo and Friends

Successful Learners   Effective Contributors   Confident Individuals

A group of Snowdrops headed out into the garden to see what they could find. A Gruffalo had passed through on his way to Glasgow and he had left some numbered footprints  on the ground…but some were missing. The Gruffalo had visited lots of places in the garden and the Snowdrops had fun collecting the numbered footprints and slotting them in order along the number line. Along the way they also found some of the other animals from the Gruffalo story and did a great job of counting out how many they had found.  Back in class, the Snowdrops continued practising their numeracy skills with the Glasgow Gruffalo and friends.

Burns Celebrations in the Snowdrops

To help celebrate Robert Burns and all about Scotland, the Snowdrops have been participating in lots of Scottish themed activities.  Some of the Snowdrops have been learning about 2d shapes and made a thistle using triangles,  a circle and a rectangle.  Some also made a handprint mouse in honour of Burns’ poem ‘To A Mouse’. The Snowdrops  showed interest in lots of Scottish items as we went through the Scottish alphabet. ‘H’ for ‘highland coo’ was a firm favourite!  The Snowsdrops also had the chance to dress in a kilt and  experience some traditional Scottish foods. Opinions were mixed on the haggis, neeps and tatties!

The Snowdrops made lots of noise this week while continuing to explore the Glasgow Gruffalo story. All pupils showed interest in the different sounds made by a variety of percussion instruments  There was lots of shaking and beating!  The Snowdrops then listened to the different sounds made by the animals in the  story  and each pupil took a turn to match an instrument to the sound made by an animal (including the Gruffalo).  Everyone participated in playing their animal  instrument as we listened to the Gruffalo song. Well done Snowdrops!

IDL – Making Boats From Recyclables

*Effective Contributors*   *Responsible Citizens*

The Snowdrops have been working hard on our Glasgow Gruffalo theme this week and after seeing pictures of the River Clyde we decided to have some water play and make our own boats. We gathered some recyclable materials to make our boats and worked in pairs to choose items that we would add to the base of our boat. We decorated sails for our boat and attached these, too. The Snowdrops worked well together and everyone contributed to the making of our fleet! Great work, Snowdrops!

The Snowdrops all showed interest in creating rain gauges using recycled plastic bottles.  They responded well to fun water play activities, making lots of rain using our class watering cans.  It has been raining a lot lately and we have also experienced playing in the rain; splashing in puddles is fun!  We have visited our school garden and found places to put our rain gauges.  We will keep checking them to see how much rain has fallen.

To celebrate winter and the snowy weather, the Snowdrops read a story all about a polar bear looking for some fish to eat. We then made our own polar bear faces. Everyone was very confident at following instructions to attach the ears and nose and everyone actively participated  in scrunching and sticking tissue paper to  make the face look furry – just like the polar bear in our story.
