Primary 1 Spread a little Festive Cheer 🎅🏻❤️❤️

Father Martin came into Primary 1 this morning for a Christmas prayer service. We talked about the Christmas story and the “gifts of love” we can give this Advent ❤️❤️❤️.

As it was Primary 1’s turn to do a “wave & walk ” at Crossgates Care Home this afternoon, we had the perfect opportunity to show love by spreading some Festive cheer ❤️! The children gladly put their Nativity costumes on to shower the residents and staff with smiles and chants of Merry Christmas!

Our First Live Assembly

All of the children were able to take part today in our first full Live Assembly.  Mrs McConville and Mrs Fergusson shared our certificate winners from last week and some photographs of things that were happening around the school.  Each class then got to say hello to each of the other classes.  Next time we look forward to showing off our Christmas Tree and have a special message from  Primary 6/7.

PC Dempster visits Primary 1 👮🏻‍♀️🚓

As part of our “People who Help Us” topic, we have interviewed some of the grown ups from our school community. Today it was our campus police offer, PC Dempster who came to see us. Not only did she answer all our questions, she brought along some Police hats and jackets for us to try on! We loved finding out about PC Dempster’s job and we think there may be some budding PC’s among us!

Afterwards we took part in some topic activities, including role play and craft!

Tier 4 Restrictions

Due to yesterday’s Scottish Government announcements regarding Tier 4 restrictions our planned class Masses can no longer go ahead. We hope to be able to reschedule these as soon as guidelines allow.

Also, we now have to revert back to PE taking place outdoors only. Please ensure that pupils are still coming to school appropriately dressed on their PE days.

Thank you.

Primary 1 – Term 2 blog update

Primary 1 are back from the October break and ready to learn!! We have a busy and fun filled term ahead including some “spooky” activities for Hallowe’en before getting ready to celebrate our first Christmas as part of the Mount Carmel school community.

Literacy

This term we will be continuing to practise our letter formation and pencil control skills to ensure we can write the letters we have been learning.

Now that we know some of the sounds the letters of the alphabet make, we will be “blending” these together to make words. These words will help us with our reading and writing tasks.

We are very excited that we are becoming “readers” in Primary 1 and will soon be bringing home our first texts with words in them. We will be making predictions about the stories we read in class, using the title and illustrations to help us.

During writing activities, we are continuing to talk about our ideas for our stories, using pictures to help us.

Numeracy

Now that we have explored the numbers to 10 fully and have looked at “more” and “less”, we will be focusing on the concept of addition. We will begin by combining two quantities and understanding that when you do this, the quantity gets bigger. This will lead us on to learning our number stories, where we learn the different ways to “make” our numbers to 10. These number stories (or facts) are the building blocks to which all the other number processes are built upon, so we will spend a lot of time on these, ensuring they are well embedded before moving on.

Alongside addition, the children will be introduced to the numbers to 20, looking at how these numbers are constructed and sequenced.

Numbers are tricky to write, so number formation will continue to be reinforced in class and through homework tasks.

Health & Well being

We will continue to welcome our PATHS puppets to help us talk about our emotions and friendships. We have been talking about the kinds of things friends do together and have discussed what makes a good friend.

We have been exploring our emotions and sharing our experiences and we will be looking at ways to help us manage our feelings.

Through our topic, we will be exploring the people who can help us when we need someone to talk to or feel unsafe.

We will also be talking about ways to keep ourselves safe when indoors and outdoors.

Topic

Our topic this term is “People who Help Us” and will be very relevant in terms of our health and hygiene awareness in school just now. We will begin by considering the people who help us within our school community and will move on to look at the roles of those who help us in our wider community, eg, police officers, nurses, fire fighters.

RE

During RE we will continue to give thanks for God’s love. We will explore how this love is shown through the “People who help us and care for us”. We will give thanks for these people and for the care they have shown us.

As the term progresses, we will celebrate advent together, preparing for the birth of Jesus by showing love and kindness to those around us as much as we possibly can. We will be exploring the story of the nativity through songs, role play and craft activities.

PE

Our PE will continue to be outdoors (weather permitting) . Please continue to dress your child in joggers and trainers on our gym days which are now Monday and Thursday!

Thanks for your support

Mrs Duff

Rainbow Reward Request

Rainbow Reward Request

We have asked the children from Primary 1 and 1/2 what toys they would like to play with during our new Reward Play time, and they have given us quite a wish list ! FOMC have kindly offered to help us out. However, in the meantime, if anyone has any of the following toys that are looking for a new home, please could you hand them into the main office. All items handed in will be sanitised and qaurantined before use:

Sand/Sandpit, Toy Story Dolls, Lego, Unicorn toys,  Cars (big), Toy Superheroes, Farm, Avenger toys, Action figures, Ninja Turtles, Barbies/Barbie House, Power Rangers, Robots

Face Coverings

As of tomorrow, following reviewed national guidance, all staff are now required to wear face coverings more often during the school day.

We know that this might be upsetting for some children. Staff will ensure that pupils are supported in adapting to this change and will reassure them that it not something to worry about. We would appreciate if you could also discuss this at home.

Thank you, as always, for your support.

Primary 1 and Primary 1/2 Homework

From Monday 28th September, Primary 1 will be receiving weekly homework.  Your child will receive their homework folder each Monday and should return it to class on the Thursday.

In your child’s folder will be a homework grid which will outline the tasks to be completed.  These tasks will be based around the new learning taking place in class each week and will include:

Jolly phonics Sound sheet(s) reinforcing the action and rhyme for our new letter “sound” as well as giving the children an opportunity to practise forming their new letter correctly.

Bottle top lid with new letter sound. These will be added to each week until every child has the full alphabet, allowing for revision of each letter sound and eventually word building.

Common Word Flashcards (these will be included in coming weeks and should be practised every night once introduced.)

Number formation sheets.

Reading task.

There will be specific guidance for completing each task on the grid but please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.

The reinforcement of your child’s literacy skills at this stage is crucial so your ongoing support with the homework is hugely appreciated and will prove very beneficial to your child’s progress.

The children are very excited to be finally starting “grown up” homework and we are sure their wonderful enthusiasm towards it will continue.

Many thanks

Mrs Duff and Mrs Dunsmore

Welcome to Primary 1 – Term 1 Update

A huge welcome to all our Primary 1 children. They have settled into class beautifully now and are becoming more confident in their surroundings each day.

Literacy

During term 1 our focus will be to develop the children’s phonological awareness in preparation for them to begin learning their letter sounds and making words. We will be concentrating on the rhyme and rhythm of language by looking at Nursery rhymes and clapping our syllables.

We will also be getting ready to write by improving our fine motor control and perfecting our pencil grip!! Name writing will be a focus too so that we can sign off on all our masterpieces!

Listening and talking will be a huge part of our day too, ensuring we develop our skills in active listening, taking turns and communicating our thoughts to others.

Numeracy

We have already begun to look for numbers all around us in Primary 1 and think of reasons why we need them.

Number time will consist of lots and lots of counting!! We will be developing our “number sense” by counting out and comparing quantities and becoming familiar with the language of mathematics.

We will also be counting aloud and learning the digits which represent our quantities.

As our pencil control improves, we will be learning to write our numbers, enabling us to record our counting.

Pattern will also be a focus, linking in to outdoor learning by looking for patterns of nature in our environment as well as man-made ones in our classroom. We will be creating our own patterns and linking these with number.

Health and Well-being

Our PATHs programme will feature heavily during our HWB time. The children have already met the puppets and have fallen in love with “Twiggle” and his friends already!!! Now that we have met our special puppet friends, they will be helping us to build friendships and learn all about our emotions.

Pupil of the day will also be introduced, where the children pay compliments to a chosen child, making them feel special throughout the day!!

Primary 1 photograph-Kilmarnock Standard

EAC have made the decision that Primary 1 children in East Ayrshire should be able to have their class photograph taken outside for the Kilmarnock Standard.

We have arranged for the photographer from the Kilmarnock Standard to come to the school on Friday morning of this week to take a group photograph of our Primary 1 children. This will be taken outside and social distancing will be observed throughout the process.

If you do not wish your child to be in the photograph please let the school office know asap please.
