Primary 6 Curriculum Update Term 2

Term 2 is upon us! Primary 6 are making progress in all areas and are showing leadership across the school.

Literacy

Listening and Talking

Listening and Talking will continue to be a focus across the curriculum. Pupils will participate in a range of activities to allow for this.

Reading

The class novel this term is ‘Titanic Detective Agency’ by Lindsay Littleson. The pupils will complete various reading and writing tasks related to this appropriate to their level. This novel study also has links to our Social Studies and Science topic ‘Titanic’.

We will also continue using the ‘Bug Club’ reading resource to aid our comprehension skills.

Spelling

Spelling will be individualised to groups and will form a focus for homework as well as class tasks.

 Numeracy

All groups made great progress last term and will continue with addition and subtraction this term, this will be followed by a topic of multiplication and division, so get practising those tables! Outcomes are determined in groups.

Money will be a focus during beyond number lessons again differentiated across the class. Please discuss financial aspects with children at home; topics could include budgeting, credit and debit and savings.

 Health and Wellbeing

Our focus this term is Health and Wellbeing Champions, pupils will participate in an authority wide topic via ‘Teams’, this will allow participation from P6 classes across the area where they will collaborate in challenges from the comfort of our classroom!

Primary 6 will continue to be PATHs playground leaders; an important responsibility, and one we are more than ready for!

Children will also continue to follow the PATHs resources, this helps pupils to identify their emotions, act accordingly and build resilience.

‘Do be mindful’ strategies and mindful learning blocks will reinforce all that we do.

Religious Education

Children will examine the initial stages of the ‘Pope Francis Faith Award’ this term, this focusses on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the unique qualities we all possess. We will look at 3 gifts this term and will continue this journey into primary 7. There will be an occasional homework task related to this.

French

Our French skills are developing and pupils are becoming more confident in this area. We will focus our attention this term on discussing pets and familiarising ourselves with accessing French dictionaries.

  Homework

Homework will be issued weekly and at primary 6 level children should be able to complete these tasks individually with limited support. Please check that your child is accessing these tasks and is becoming responsible around this. Homework will always be issued to reinforce learning and children will have been taught the area in class. Homework creates routine and independence and will be an expectation at every stage of school life especially secondary school. In developing good habits in the upper primary this will ease that transition when the time comes.

P6 Curricular Overview -Term 1

Welcome back! The summer seems like an already distant memory and primary 6 have settled into their new routine well.

Children are encouraged to have all items they require daily and a PE kit which remains in school please.

Our learning this term:

 Literacy

A focus on legible and cursive handwriting will be a priority this term with individuals being supported accordingly around this.

Reading

The class novel this term is ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl. The pupils will complete various reading and writing tasks related to this appropriate to their level. This novel study also has links to other curricular areas including Health and Well-being, art and drama.

We will also continue using the ‘Bug Club’ reading resource to aid our comprehension skills.

Spelling will be individualised to groups and will form a focus for homework as well as class tasks.

 

Numeracy

Children have completed necessary revision of previous learning and are ready to tackle their new learning. This term the class will focus on place value; outcomes are determined in groups, this will lead to a period of addition and subtraction across the groups.

Time will be a focus during beyond number lessons again differentiated across the class. Children will be focussing on duration and digital as well as analogue. Circles and Rectangles will also explore 24hr conversion. Please provide opportunities for time telling at home.  Children will also look at 2D and 3D shape this term, they will investigate properties and tiling.

 

Health and Wellbeing

Our focus this term is ‘Class Community’ we are together creating a charter for our class rights and expectations. Pupils are involved in discussions around areas that we define as ‘Quality’. Children will also choose a school community group to join. This will allow pupils to showcase their upper primary maturity and help drive the school priorities and community forward.

Children will also continue to follow the PATHs resources, this helps pupils to identify their emotions, act accordingly and build resilience.

Religious Education

 Pupils will be encouraged to join discussions around biblical stories, particularly ‘Creation’ with a focus on science and religion. We will explore when the two compliment each other. They will be encouraged to think ‘deeper’ and ask questions to help develop their faith.

Primary 6 have looked at ‘Francophone’ countries and are developing an understanding of the French language in travel and economy. We will be revising colours and numbers to 100 this term. Dates and times will also be reinforced.

P5 Curriculum Update – Term 4

Welcome back!  We hope you had a lovely Easter break with your families and are ready for a fun packed and hopefully sunny last term. Fingers crossed!!

 

Primary 5 have now established themselves in our upper school and continue to strive to be good role models for their peers and build on their increasing independence.

During term 4 our focus will be:

Literacy

This term P5 will be focussing on Narrative writing, we will be developing literary devices and linking this to our topic. In reading, we will continue our progress within Bug Club further developing our AL comprehension strategies as described in our latest ‘Sharing the Learning’ video. We will focus on listening and talking throughout our topic lessons, expressing our opinions and justifying these with good reasoning in debate/ lesson presentations. Some groups will continue to work on literal comprehension and prediction skills, whilst others will continue their work on inferential and evaluative questions. Spelling and phoneme work will be consolidated this term and pupils will use ‘Active Spelling’ resources and activities to support this.

Numeracy

This term, P5 will be focussing on Division, as well as Fractions and Decimals. The circles and rectangles groups will complete division with remainders. The squares and triangles will also focus on these areas at their level. In Beyond Number, pupils will look at 2D and 3D shape recognition and properties, making links to angles and symmetry. Later in the term, we will also be exploring ‘Measurement’. (volume, mass, length, area)

Health and Well-being / PE

We will be focussing on completing our PATHS lessons and moving onto explore further areas such as healthy food, hygiene, bodies (God’s Loving Plan) as well as keeping ourselves safe. We will also look at substances that can damage our physical and emotional health, appropriate to our age.  Pupils will have the opportunity to visit many of these concepts during our whole school  ‘Health week’.

PE days will now be on Wednesday and Friday mornings. We will participate in independent and teamwork for Athletics during April/May moving onto Orienteering in June. Pupils will complete these lessons outdoors as much as possible so please make sure your child is prepared for the weather that day. It is essential that your child comes to school prepared for outdoor learning in appropriate clothing as we hopefully plan to be outside more as the summer nears and weather improves. Make sure they have plenty of water with them for very hot periods and sun cream.

Science

This term in Science we will be investigating water. We will be developing our knowledge and understanding of the water cycle and also exploring and investigating the methods for purifying water. We will look at the many uses of water and why it is important to conserve water.

RE 

As Eastertide passes, we will be mainly focusing on Mary, Our Lady.  Celebrating her example and significance through the Gospel of Mark as well as revisiting the feast of the Ascension and Pentecost. In June, we will look at God’s Loving Plan resources as part our This Is Our Faith programme. This will look closely at friendships, relationships as well as the role of being a parent /carer.

IDL

Our enterprise topic this term is ‘A Night at the Movies’. Pupils will look at the evolution of the film industry from the silent movies, introduction of sound, colour, animation, from Drive-Thru to 3D/4D currently. This will include developing our Talking and Listening and also writing skills (scripts/movie reviews, Gogglebox), also ICT  skills ( Green screen/ ipad) to make our own movie trailers which will incorporate set design, production and directing and expressive arts lessons to create our sets. These will be ‘premiered’ at our own Oscars ceremony/Party where we will dress up in our best and have the opportunity to culminate all our learning, have fun and raise some funds for school.

P5 Outdoor Afternoon Fun-draising for SCIAF!

As part of their ‘Charities’ topic and SCIAF Lenten fundraising, P4 put on a fabulous Outdoor activity- based afternoon for the whole school on Friday.  Pupils had a ‘wheely’ good time bringing in their scooters/bikes and even Hoverboard Segways  to whizz around the playground.

P5 World Book day

Yesterday, the whole school celebrated World Book Day 2022 and our P5 class took part in various activities during the day.

Here are some of the fabulous costumes:

Yesterday, we dressed up as characters from our favourite books. We all watched an ‘Authors’ Live’ session with  Simon Farnaby, the actor from ‘Horrible Histories’. He has released a new book ‘The Wizard and Me’ about a talking guinea pig called Bubbles who is very funny and cheeky. It had us all laughing in class. He challenged us to write about an animal and use your imagination.

In the afternoon, at an assembly we took part in a parade and got to look at all the different costumes. They were all great! We really enjoyed the live session and looking at the ‘Flanimals’ by Ricky Gervais, we decided to create our own ‘Flanimals’ and develop their characters giving them  human characteristics and using descriptive writing techniques.

Primary 5 -Curricular Update Term 2

 

Welcome back!  We hope everyone in P5 is feeling rested after their October holidays and are now settled back into the school routine and ready to take on more responsibility in the upper school.

We are looking forward to new learning discoveries this term as well as building on our current skills and developing these further.

                  Literacy

Primary 5 will focus on our reading skills and comprehension strategies through accessing both Bug Club and Giglet texts both within school and at home for homework. We will be developing our fluency and expression as well as looking at both fiction and non-fiction texts this term to link with our IDL topic.

In spelling, we will continue to focus on our phonemes, blends and common words. This will take the form of activities related to the ‘Active Spelling’ resource pertinent to the ability and stage.

Within listening and talking, we will continue to practise listening to and following instructions. The children will also be encouraged to share their opinions on different matters as well as providing an explanation as to why they think in that way. This will be predominantly linked to our IDL topic for the term, but will encompass many of our curricular areas.

This term our formal writing lessons will centre on persuasive writing. We will use structured planning ideas to allow children to generate pieces and build upon helpful writing techniques to support this. We will also continue to revisit narrative genres using our description bubbles to aid writing and note taking for non-fiction IDL writing.

Numeracy

Pupils are working on concepts within groups focussing on 1st and 2nd level concepts. The circles and rectangles groups will focus on addition and subtraction this term, we will be using various strategies to help our numeracy confidence grow. The squares and rectangles will also focus on addition and subtraction at their level we will use number lines and our place value knowledge to practise our formal notation. All pupils will engage in number talks and interactive maths activities as well as looking at new strategies to develop their mental maths agility and recall. Times tables should continue to be practised at home to ensure quick recall. In Beyond Number, we will be looking at ‘Time’ as a focus within our respective groups.

Health and Well-being/ICT

We will be continuing to look at emotions and feelings this term and strategies we can use in dealing with them. This will be supported through our whole school ‘Paths’ resource.  In ICT, Primary 5 will continue to work on our basic computing skills and how these can help us in everyday life. Continued practise in class and at home of touch typing and login skills will improve access to various platforms currently used in school from Glow, Giglets, Bug club and Sumdog.

R.E

This month our focus has been on Our lady. We will be supported in our learning by Srs. Mabel and Juliet from Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish who will help us to learn prayers such as the ‘Angelus’. We will also focus on the lives of the Saints, the creation story and discuss themes such as ‘Remembrance’. In December, we will prepare as a class for advent and observe this through various school lessons, attending mass and associated activities.

Science/IDL

Our IDL focus this term will be science based looking at animal and their habitats and the diversity of living things. We will tie this in with a study of David Attenborough and the work he does. This will link to Art and literacy as well as STEM. This will be introduced as the term progresses once we have completed our ‘Knights and Castles’ learning.

Welcome back!  The children of Primary 5 have settled beautifully back into school after the holidays and are ready to become super role models as part of the upper school.

This term we have established our class community, routines and expectations and we are making excellent progress already.

Literacy

Primary 5 will focus on a novel study to begin the academic session. We are reading ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and it is proving very popular! We have reading, writing and comprehension links to the novel as well as art and health and well-being tasks.

We will continue to use Bug Club as our differentiated reading resource and will be developing our fluency and comprehension skills through the use of this resource both in class and as homework.

Spelling will take the form of active activities related to the ‘Active Spelling’ resource, the children will continue to experience phonemes and blends pertinent to the ability and stage.

This term our formal writing lessons will centre on descriptive writing. We will use structured planning ideas to allow children to generate pieces, which are rich in language and grammatically sound. The stimuli for this will be IDL topic work on ‘Knights and Castles’ and our ‘Charlie’ novel.

The squares and rectangles will also focus on place value and the importance of column and quantity value. All pupils will also look at Data Handling as part of their Beyond Number topic. This will involve collecting and interpreting data, as well as creating tables, charts and graphs.

Times tables should continue to be practised at home to ensure quick recall.

Health and Well-being

The class have worked brilliantly as a team to ensure that our class and primary 5 family understand the responsibilities and expectations that will be placed upon them this year. Our class charter is complete and children are enjoying earning house tokens for their respective houses.

We are continuing to use our whole school ‘Paths’ resource this year, which allows children to grow emotionally and channel their thoughts and behaviours in a calm and proactive way. Children are familiar with this programme and can name and identify their feelings. We will continue to provide them with scenarios and situations that will require their knowledge of ‘self’ to grow.

R.E

The pupils have been looking at the sacrament of Confirmation as we begin this term. This is in preparation for receiving this sacrament later this month and what to expect. Our study focus will be on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, looking at the lives of the Saints and being ready to become a full member of the Church. This term we will also focus on ‘Friendship’ as we relate this to bible stories from the Gospel of Mark.

IDL

Our topic this term is ‘Knights and Castles’. Pupils will use their developing research and note-taking skills to look at historical events in the Middle Ages. This will include the history of castles, various castle designs, Knights, Codes of chivalry and looking at society at this time. We will be using various curricular areas within this topic to help such as ICT, Art, Literacy, STEM and problem solving skills.

Hey new P4s!

Welcome to Primary 4! I am Mrs McIntyre. Most of you will probably remember me as your Primary 1 teacher, I certainly remember you all and all the fun we had together from greedy number hunt monsters, tadpoles, Katie Morag’s Post Office and who could forget about the wild woo in the woods! I am so lucky to have the chance to teach some of you again. If you don’t know me, please don’t worry as  I am super excited to get to know you as your teacher along with Mrs Travers on a Thursday and Friday. We’re going to have an awesome time learning this year.  I know you can’t wait to see your friends but it won’t be long now and I definitley can’t wait to see all of your faces in August – I’ve been missing you all! I have been busy setting up a new classroom just along from the other P4 classroom and I have taken some pictures to let you see what it may look like after the summer. I can’t wait for you all to help me decorate my room with your fabulous work!

P5 – World Book Day

 

 

Well Done to all for taking part! What a fantastic Day with literacy activities such as decoding the ‘Mystery of Sticky Pines’ and also  a fun interactive session with Michael Rosen the author of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ for the 10th Birthday of ‘Authors Live’ . (Ask about their sticket!) We finished with an amazing costume parade.  Keep reading books at home! From P5.

Primary 5 -Term 2 Update

Literacy

This term in literacy we will be learning to improve our note-taking skills to aid with our comprehension strategy of summarising and paraphrasing.  As well as continuing with our Bug Club readers this term,  we will also be looking at non-fiction texts to support note taking and apply this skill within in our writing lessons where we will focus on producing a fact file and report. In addition, we will continue work on our phonemes through our Active spelling programme.

Numeracy & Maths

In numeracy, groups will focus on the following :

  • Fractions, Percentages & Decimals
  • Division
  • Subtraction

All groups will work on mental maths revision and problem solving across all areas every day through number talks, interactive challenges or ‘fast five’ activities. Beyond number, P5 will be looking at ‘Time’ and ‘Money’ .

Health & Wellbeing /P.E

This term we are continue to work through our PATHS programme with a focus on different types of feelings, as well as ‘Pupil of the Day’.

In P.E, we will be working on ‘Gymnastics‘ and ‘Basketball‘, building necessary physical skills within these sports such as co-ordination, control, precision and balance, as well as teamwork strategies. A kind reminder :  P.E days are Wed/Fri and we would ask that your child comes prepared with a kit,  a change of shoes (indoor) and without wearing jewellery if possible as not coming prepared can often result in reduced lesson time.

Topic

We have started our exciting new topic this term where we are travelling around the globe as we look at ‘Continents’.  We will be exploring and finding out lots of interesting facts about Asia, Africa, Oceania, Antarctica,Europe, North America and South America. This will include using our new note-taking skills as we learn facts about landmarks, physical features (Rivers, mountains), Countries & Capitals including mapping skills.

Jan/Feb – We will be looking at ‘Judaism’ and ‘Life in the time of Jesus’ in first century Palestine.

Feb/Mar – Preparations for Lent.
